Pisa to Rome by train is really three different journeys sold under one route, and picking the right one matters more than usual here.

Choose your tier: change for speed, or ride direct

If you want the shortest realistic journey, accept a change of train. Take a regional train from Pisa Centrale to Florence Santa Maria Novella, then a Frecciarossa onward to Rome Termini. The whole trip takes about 2 hours 48 minutes to 3 hours 5 minutes. Frecciarossa services from Florence to Rome run frequently through the day, so the connection rarely costs you much waiting time. For most travellers, this is the option worth booking.

A true nonstop Frecciarossa does exist too, routed via Florence without requiring you to leave the train, and it covers the distance in as little as 2 hours 10 minutes. Only 1 or 2 of these run each day. They are timed for the early morning and evening, aimed more at business travellers than at anyone with a flexible schedule. Build your day around one of these two departures, or skip it and use the Florence change instead.

If you can't catch one of those two nonstop departures but still want to avoid a change, other direct services run along the older coastal line through Livorno and Civitavecchia. The best of these are Frecciabianca trains, taking about 2 hours 56 minutes, close to the change-at-Florence time without the hassle of a connection. That makes Frecciabianca the sensible default if you are travelling with luggage or children. Slower InterCity trains take around 3 hours 27 minutes, and a few Regionale Veloce services stretch past 4 hours. The Regionale Veloce is the cheapest way to travel and needs no reservation, but there is no first class. Treat it as the budget option for travellers with time to spare, not the default choice.

Italo's Pisa to Rome ticket is not what it looks like

Italo, the private high-speed operator, sells a Pisa to Rome ticket, but it does not run its own train out of Pisa. The product combines a Trenitalia regional train from Pisa to Florence with an Italo high-speed service from Florence to Rome, priced from about EUR 24.20 for the pair. It is the same change-at-Florence journey as the Trenitalia option above, just sold as one ticket with Italo operating only the second leg. Compare it against Trenitalia's own through fares for the same journey before you book. Don't assume Italo gives you an independent alternative, because on this corridor it doesn't.

Stations at each end

Pisa Centrale is the main station for this route and the one nearly every ticket will show. A few regional trains instead start from Pisa San Rossore, a short walk from the Leaning Tower itself. Check which station your ticket names before you head there.

Rome Termini is the arrival station for every version of this journey and sits close to the historic centre, with onward metro connections across the city. Florence Santa Maria Novella, where the faster options change trains, is a large through station a few minutes' walk from the Duomo. There is usually enough time between trains for a coffee if your connection allows it.

Tickets, fares, and rail passes

Trenitalia's cheapest advance fares for Pisa to Rome behave like limited-availability airline fares: tied to a specific train and date rather than a fixed price for any departure, and the cheapest seats sell out first. Above that entry tier sit Super Economy, Economy, and flexible Base fares at rising prices with more generous refund and change conditions. Book the lowest tier as soon as your date is fixed if price matters most to you, and weigh the total cost against how much flexibility you actually need before settling for the cheapest option.

If you hold an Interrail or Eurail pass, it covers every Trenitalia train on this route, including the regional, Frecciabianca, and Frecciarossa services. It does not cover Italo at all. A seat reservation is still compulsory on top of the pass: EUR 13 for Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, or Frecciabianca, and EUR 3 for InterCity, bookable online or at a staffed ticket counter rather than a self-service machine or Trenitalia's website. Since Italo's own Pisa to Rome ticket uses a Trenitalia regional train anyway, pass holders gain nothing from it. Book directly with Trenitalia instead.
