Perugia has three railway stations, and the one you want is almost always Perugia, the main station at Fontivegge in the lower town. It has the long-distance and regional services and the Minimetrò to the old town. Perugia Ponte San Giovanni is the first stop out on the line to Assisi and Foligno, and Perugia Sant’Anna is a small station on the former FCU line, closer to the centre and served by local trains only.
Choosing a Perugia station
Book Perugia unless you have a reason not to. The Fontivegge bus terminus is in the square in front of the Minimetrò stop, close to the station, and the Minimetrò stop has a direct pedestrian link to the station, so you can be on your way up to the old town within minutes of stepping off the train.
Perugia Ponte San Giovanni is on two lines. It is the first stop out of Perugia on the regional line to Assisi and Foligno, about 10 minutes from the main station, and Assisi is about 20 to 25 minutes from Perugia. It is also the junction for the former FCU line to Città di Castello and Sansepolcro. It is outside the city centre, so it only makes sense if your onward train leaves from here.
Perugia Sant’Anna is the other end of that FCU line, about 15 minutes from Ponte San Giovanni, via the minor halts of Perugia Pallotta and Piscille. It is the nearer of the two to the old town, and regional trains and some buses run between the two stations through the day. Since 7 September 2026 some weekday trains from Città di Castello run through to Sant’Anna without a change. Most visitors will still arrive at Perugia, which has the Minimetrò.
Train changes from 5 October 2026
From 5 October 2026 Trenitalia replaces several trains with buses on the line from Sansepolcro to Perugia Sant’Anna via Città di Castello and Ponte San Giovanni. It also cancels five trains between Ponte San Giovanni and Foligno, with no bus in their place: departures at 12:18, 13:03 and 19:10 from Ponte San Giovanni, and 13:24 and 21:25 from Foligno. Check your exact date in the Trenitalia journey planner before relying on a time.
From the station to the centre
The Minimetrò has seven stops, running from Pian di Massiano to Pincetto. Fontivegge is the fourth stop, so Pincetto is three stops up the hill. A car comes about every two and a half minutes.
At Pincetto, escalators and an inclined lift take you up into the old town, and Corso Vannucci is a few minutes’ walk beyond. The escalators and lift run daily from 07:00 to 02:00 until late October 2026. From late October to 31 May they run 07:00 to 21:20 Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 00:30 on Saturdays and the day before a public holiday, and 07:00 to 21:00 on Sundays and holidays.
The Minimetrò runs Monday to Friday 07:00 to 21:05, Saturday 07:00 to 01:05 until 26 December 2026, and Sunday 09:00 to 20:45.
City bus TS also runs from Fontivegge to Piazza Partigiani in about 10 minutes and to Piazza Italia in about 14, roughly every half hour from about 05:30 to 22:50, Monday to Saturday (winter timetable, 14 September 2026 to 8 June 2027).
Tickets
One UP ticket covers the Minimetrò, city buses and Trenitalia trains between the Perugia stations, including Ponte San Giovanni and Sant’Anna. It costs €1.50 and is valid for 70 minutes, or €2 bought on a bus. A ten-ride ticket is €12.90 and a 24-hour ticket €5.40.
Rail passes and reservations
Regional trains are covered by an Interrail Pass and need no reservation. Intercity trains to Roma Termini and Milano Centrale need a €3 reservation with a pass, and the Frecciarossa needs a €13 reservation (as of October 2026). One Frecciarossa a day calls at Perugia in the timetable valid until 12 December 2026. It leaves at 05:24 from Monday to Saturday for Torino Porta Nuova, calling at Arezzo, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Bologna and Milan, and comes back from Turin in the evening, arriving at 22:30 every day except Saturday. At other times Trenitalia sells FrecciaLink, a Frecciarossa to Firenze Santa Maria Novella plus a connecting bus to the Fontivegge bus terminus, as one ticket. The UP ticket for the Minimetrò and city buses is separate and not part of a rail pass.

Frequently asked questions
Which Perugia station should I book?
Book Perugia, the main station at Fontivegge. Ponte San Giovanni is only worth choosing if your onward train leaves from there, for example the regional line to Assisi and Foligno. Sant’Anna is mainly for the Città di Castello line.
How do I get from Perugia station to the old town?
Take the Minimetrò from Fontivegge, three stops up to Pincetto, then the escalators or inclined lift. Corso Vannucci is a few minutes’ walk from there. A single UP ticket costs €1.50.
Can I reach Assisi from Perugia?
Yes. Regional trains to Assisi and Foligno stop first at Perugia Ponte San Giovanni and take about 20 to 25 minutes to Assisi. From 5 October 2026 five trains between Ponte San Giovanni and Foligno are cancelled.
Do Sant’Anna and Ponte San Giovanni have trains and buses?
Both are served by Trenitalia regional trains. Some services between them are buses that stop outside the stations, and from 5 October 2026 several trains on the Città di Castello line are replaced by buses.
Can one ticket cover the Minimetrò, buses and trains in Perugia?
An UP ticket does: €1.50 for 70 minutes, valid on the Minimetrò, city buses and Trenitalia trains between Perugia’s stations.
