Trains to and from Siena
The main service is Trenitalia Regionale between Siena and Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Direct trains to Florence leave Siena at 18 minutes past each hour from 11:18 to 20:18. There are more in the early morning, but none between 09:18 and 11:18. The trains take about 1 hour 34 minutes, calling at Poggibonsi, Certaldo, Castelfiorentino and Empoli. Empoli is about an hour from Siena if you want to break the journey there. A few early and evening trains run at other times, and some do not run on public holidays. These times apply to the timetable valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026.
Other regional trains run east to Chiusi-Chianciano Terme via Asciano, Sinalunga and Montepulciano, and south-west to Grosseto via Buonconvento. Siena has no high-speed trains. For Rome, Milan or Venice, change at Firenze Santa Maria Novella.
From the station to the old town
The usual way up is the covered escalator link from the station area to the Antiporto di Camollia, at the edge of the centre. It can be out of service for waterproofing work.
The alternative is Autolinee Toscane line 530 from the bus stop at Siena Stazione. It runs to Mazzini, Piazza del Sale and Piazza Gramsci, a short walk from Piazza del Campo. A ticket bought before boarding costs €2 and is valid for 70 minutes. A ten-ride carnet is €18.20, and buying on board costs €3 (fares from 1 August 2026).
Rail passes and reservations
Only regional trains serve Siena, and regional trains need no reservation, so you can board with an Interrail pass without booking. The Frecce and Intercity trains that carry paid reservation fees with a pass do not call here. If you reach Siena by changing at Florence from a high-speed train, the reservation applies to that earlier leg only. The city bus needs its own ticket.
