Trento station stands on Piazza Dante, a short walk from the old town, and it is where Frecciarossa, Italo, the Munich Railjets and the regional trains of the Brenner line stop. Trento Santa Chiara is only a small stop on the Valsugana line, not a way into the centre.
Arriving at Trento station
Trento sits on the Verona to Brenner main line and takes regional, intercity, high-speed and international trains. The edge of the old town is less than five minutes' walk from Piazza Dante and the cathedral square is about 550 metres away, so no bus is needed. A taxi rank, city bus stops, the coach station and bike-share stands are beside the building, and the station offers assistance for travellers with reduced mobility.
A city bus ticket bought beforehand costs €1.20 for 70 minutes and is sold at the kiosk inside the station; a single bought on board costs €2.
Trains from Trento
Five Railjets a day leave for Munich Hbf at 09:59, 11:59, 13:59, 15:59 and 17:59, each taking about 4 hours 30 minutes. Bicycles travel on them only with a reservation. The same Railjets run south, five a day, to Verona, Bologna and Venice; Bologna takes about 2 hours.
Frecciarossa runs to Milano Centrale in about 2 hours 25 minutes and to Roma Termini in about 4 hours 30 minutes. Italo also reaches Rome in about 4 hours 30 minutes, and other Italo trains run to Naples and Bolzano. Trenord runs a regional express to Milano Porta Garibaldi in about 3 hours 10 minutes.
For shorter trips, Trenitalia regional trains run to Bolzano in 45 to 55 minutes, to Rovereto in about 20 minutes and to Verona Porta Nuova in about 65 to 85 minutes. These main-line times are for the timetable valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026.
The train to Val di Sole
The Dolomiti Express to Malè and Mezzana, run by Trentino Trasporti, is a separate railway. Its terminal, listed as Trento (Via Dogana) on the timetable, is a few metres from the main station, and its trains do not use the main platforms.
Trains leave about hourly on weekdays, more often at peak times, from about 05:30 to 20:20, and every two hours on Sundays and holidays. Allow about 1 hour 15 minutes to Cles, 1 hour 40 minutes to Malè and 2 hours to Mezzana. Not every train runs the full length, so look at the destination on the board. This timetable is valid from 10 September 2026 to 8 June 2027, and tickets are sold separately from main-line fares.
Trento Santa Chiara and the Valsugana line
Valsugana trains to Bassano del Grappa start at Trento and call at Trento Santa Chiara about four minutes later, then at Trento San Bartolameo, Villazzano, Povo-Mesiano and Pergine. Departures are roughly hourly, and Bassano del Grappa is about 2 hours away. Both Trenitalia and Trentino Trasporti run trains on this line, and a few departures each way are replacement buses rather than trains, so look at the vehicle type before you book.
Choose Trento Santa Chiara only if your accommodation or plans are on that side of the city. Between Trento and Povo-Mesiano, a Trento city ticket is also valid on Valsugana trains. Buy it at the kiosk inside Trento station and validate it at the platform machine where there is one.
Tickets
Each operator sells its own tickets. On Valsugana trains, a journey that starts and ends in Trentino, between Trento and Primolano, needs a ticket at the province's own integrated fare, so ask for the Trentino provincial fare when you buy.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, an Interrail Pass covers Trenitalia trains and Trenord regional trains, but not Italo. Frecciarossa needs a €13 reservation. On the Munich Railjets a seat reservation is optional, but pass holders pay a mandatory supplement in Italy of €10 in second class or €15 in first, plus €5 if bought on board. Regional trains need no reservation. Trentino Trasporti is not part of the pass, so buy a ticket for the Val di Sole line and for the Valsugana trains it runs. Trenitalia's Valsugana regional trains are covered.
