Trenord

Trenord runs Lombardy's regional and suburban trains: about 2,400 a day, reaching into 8 neighbouring provinces, the Canton of Ticino and Malpensa airport. FNM, the region's own rail infrastructure holding company, formed it with Trenitalia in 2011. Trenord is not Trenitalia. Trenitalia handles Italy's long-distance and high-speed trains; Trenord handles the regional and suburban services that link Lombardy's towns, its commuter belt and its airport.

Network and services

Trenord trains call at around 460 stations over roughly 2,000 km of track. That network splits into suburban and urban routes around Milan, regional routes across the wider region, cross-border services into Switzerland, and the dedicated Malpensa Express airport line. Milano Centrale and Milano Cadorna are the two main city departure points for airport and longer-distance connections.

Tickets and fares

Inside Milan and Monza e Brianza, forget separate train tickets. Trenord uses the STIBM zone system there, shared with the metro and buses, priced by how many zones you cross rather than which mode you take. Buy STIBM tickets through the Trenord website or app in Tap&Go mode, or load a rechargeable card at a ticket office or machine; you cannot buy one on board. Outside the STIBM area, Trenord sells its own regional tickets and season passes.

Malpensa Express

The Malpensa Express is Trenord's dedicated airport line: 146 trains a day between central Milan and Malpensa's Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. From Milano Centrale, expect around 51 minutes. From Milano Cadorna, a faster, first class only service takes around 37 minutes. Some Milano Centrale departures carry second class seating too, but Trenord limits second class on journeys that actually start or end at Malpensa, so confirm your class when you book rather than assuming a cheaper second class fare is available all the way to the airport. A one way ticket costs €15, a round trip €25, and a family fare covering two adults and two children costs €36.
