Szybka Kolej Miejska (Warszawa)

Szybka Kolej Miejska, shortened to SKM, is Warsaw's municipal rail operator and, by its own account, the only one of its kind in the country. It is not PKP Szybka Kolej Miejska w Trójmieście, a separate company based in Gdynia that runs Tricity's SKM service between Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia; the two share a name and a train type but not an owner, a region or a ticket system. Nor is Warsaw's SKM the same as Koleje Mazowieckie, the regional operator that shares some of the same tracks and stations. SKM sits inside Warszawski Transport Publiczny (WTP) alongside the capital's buses, trams and metro, and its trains run on tickets issued by the Zarząd Transportu Miejskiego (ZTM).

SKM network

Five lines make up the network. S1 links Pruszków and Otwock through the city centre. S2 runs from Chopin Airport to Sulejówek Miłosna. S3 connects Chopin Airport with Legionowo. S4 runs from Piaseczno to Zegrze Południowe, and S40 branches off the same southern corridor to reach Radzymin instead. Warszawa Centralna, Warszawa Zachodnia and Warszawa Wschodnia are the main interchanges, connecting SKM to WKD, Koleje Mazowieckie, city buses, trams and the metro.

Both S2 and S3 call directly at Chopin Airport, which makes SKM a straightforward way to reach the airport from central Warsaw without a taxi or bus transfer. The network also reaches towns just outside the city, among them Pruszków, Otwock, Legionowo, Radzymin, Sulejówek and Piaseczno, and residents of outer districts such as Ursus, Włochy, Wawer and Białołęka rely on these lines for the daily commute into town.

Tickets and fares

SKM has no separate ticket range of its own. Journeys run on standard ZTM tickets, the same ones sold across Warsaw's public transport network, priced by fare zone: Zone 1 covers central Warsaw, and Zone 2 covers the outer stretches of each line. A 20-minute ZTM ticket does not cover a Chopin Airport to Warszawa Centralna trip, since that journey takes longer than 20 minutes, so a longer-duration ticket is needed for it.

An SKM ticket does not automatically carry over onto Koleje Mazowieckie or WKD trains. Under the shared Wspólny Bilet ZTM-KM-WKD arrangement, certain ZTM ticket types, among them daily, 3-day, weekend, 30-day, 90-day, senior and large-family tickets, are also honoured on Koleje Mazowieckie within a defined range of stations, and on WKD between Warszawa Śródmieście WKD and Opacz; short-duration ZTM tickets of 20, 75 and 90 minutes are not valid on WKD. Separately, a valid Koleje Mazowieckie Airport Ticket lets you use any SKM train for 75 minutes within fare zone 1. Outside these specific arrangements, continuing your journey onto Koleje Mazowieckie or WKD means buying a ticket for that operator.

Onboard and practical notes

SKM trains are air conditioned, fitted with bicycle hooks throughout, and built to be accessible to wheelchair users, so a bike travels without a separate reservation. There is no Wi-Fi on board. Park and Ride facilities sit near five stops: Warszawa Jeziorki, Warszawa Żerań, Warszawa Ursus-Niedźwiadek, Warszawa Wawer and Warszawa Anin, free to use with a valid daily, 3-day, weekend, 30-day, 90-day, senior or large-family ticket.
