What Koleje Mazowieckie is

Koleje Mazowieckie, referred to as KM, was established on 29 July 2004 and began operating on 1 January 2005. The company was originally owned jointly by the Masovian Province Local Government and PKP Przewozy Regionalne, and the Masovian Province has held 100 percent of KM's shares since 2008. KM runs regional rail passenger transport across the Warsaw agglomeration and the rest of the Mazowieckie voivodeship, as part of an integrated public transport system.

Where KM trains run

KM's regional and fast regional trains radiate out from Warsaw on a set of numbered lines, including line 1 to Skierniewice, line 2 to Łuków, line 3 to Łowicz Główny, line 7 to Dęblin, line 8 to Skarżysko Kamienna and line 9 to Działdowo. Several of these routes also run named fast trains that call at fewer stations than the standard regional service on the same line: 'Wiedenka' and 'Bolimek' towards Skierniewice, 'Łukowianka' towards Łuków, and 'Mazovia' towards Łowicz and Płock. Check the timetable for your line, since a fast train and a regional train on the same corridor can stop at very different stations.

Tickets and fare integration

KM tickets are priced in Polish złoty (PLN). Under the ZTM-KM-WKD Joint Ticket offer, certain ZTM tickets, namely 24-hour, 3-day, weekend, weekend group, 30-day, 90-day, senior citizen tickets and tickets for a child in a family with three children, are honored on KM trains, along with related reduced and free travel rights set by the City of Warsaw. Timed 20-minute tickets and single-transfer 75/90-minute ZTM tickets are not honored on KM trains, except on the Warszawa Płudy to Warszawa Lotnisko Chopina airport section, where RL airport trains accept both. On the same airport corridor, SKM municipal trains serving Chopin Airport accept the full range of KM ticket types, on condition that the standard single KM fare from the airport to central Warsaw is not lower than PLN 4.40, and a KM Airport Ticket lets the holder ride any ZTM public transport vehicle in fare zone 1 for 75 minutes.

KM reciprocally honors POLREGIO tickets on the Siedlce to Łuków and Siedlce to Czeremcha sections, where both operators run trains, subject to each ticket type's own fare rules. KM and the Łódź Agglomeration Railway (ŁKA) accept each other's tickets when a train is unexpectedly cancelled, delayed by more than 60 minutes, or a scheduled connection is missed. KM and PKP Intercity may likewise honor each other's tickets for substitute transport during a cancellation or a delay exceeding 40 minutes, though this excludes international trains, first class, sleeping or couchette cars, and Express InterCity Premium services.

Separately from the ZTM-KM-WKD Joint Ticket, KM and the Warsaw Commuter Railway (WKD) mutually accept season sectional tickets between Warszawa Śródmieście, Warszawa Ochota and Warszawa Zachodnia and their WKD-side equivalents, paired with Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Milanówek and Pruszków on the WKD side.

Onboard notes

Cyclists can bring one bike on board, carried in the compartment set aside for passengers with larger luggage, under the passenger's own supervision, without disturbing fellow travellers or damaging the carriage.

Planning a trip

KM's tickets link into several other Warsaw and Mazovia networks in different, limited ways. Check which arrangement applies, the ZTM Joint Ticket, the WKD season ticket link, or the disruption-only reciprocal deals, before assuming a KM ticket works on a connecting service.
