Use Warszawa Centralna for most journeys, but check the full station name before paying because some trains use another Warsaw stop.
Warszawa Centralna is the default
For a first visit, use Warszawa Centralna unless the train or your final address gives you a clear reason to go elsewhere. It is Warsaw's main long-distance station, beside the Palace of Culture and Science. The Old Town is not next door. Plan the onward journey before treating the word central as a promise of a short walk.
Centralna has four underground island platforms. Departure information separates the platform, peron, from the track, tor; train displays may also give the sector where your carriage will stop. Follow the live board. Waiting in the concourse until the last moment is an easy way to miss a change, so look for the station name, platform, track and carriage position as soon as they appear.
The outer stations have specific jobs
Warszawa Wschodnia, Warszawa Zachodnia and Warszawa Gdańska are separate stations, not alternative spellings of Centralna. One train may call at several Warsaw stops, begin at an outer station or avoid Centralna during planned engineering work. Open the full stop list before paying. Otherwise, you may leave yourself an unnecessary trip across the city.
A local train can be the quickest way between Warsaw stations, but make sure you know which nearby platform it uses. Warszawa Śródmieście is the suburban station beside Centralna; Centralna itself handles the long-distance platforms. Modlin Airport services use Warsaw stops including Zachodnia and Gdańska. Pick the station from the chosen train and date, not from a general rule.
Domestic routes reward a category comparison
PKP Intercity runs direct long-distance trains from Warsaw towards Kraków, Gdańsk and Wrocław. EIP, the Pendolino category, serves all three corridors. Kraków has several EIP departures spread through the day. The quickest EIP trips take about two and a half hours to Kraków and under three hours to Gdańsk. Treat those figures as planning guides, then compare the time and fare for your date because a slower EIC, IC or TLK can still be the better buy.
Domestic prices change with the train, demand and ticket conditions. Compare the live PLN total within the same departure window, then read the exchange and refund terms. Check whether the ticket comes with an assigned seat. If an IC or TLK leaves at a similar time for less money, the slower category can be the better buy.
International journeys depend on the exact train
Direct international trains link Warsaw with Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Budapest, but the pattern differs by route. Berlin can have up to seven direct EuroCity trains a day, with the fastest trips taking a little over five hours. Prague has three direct daytime EuroCity trains taking just over 8 hours, plus overnight cars. Vienna has three direct daytime trains taking about 7 hours and a night connection. Budapest has both daytime and overnight trains. Check the live timetable before building another booking around any of these times.
Arrival time matters as much as price. For an overnight trip, compare a seat with a couchette or sleeper. The cheapest place may leave you with a poor night's rest. Direct cars can travel in trains made up of portions for several destinations, so match the destination on your carriage with the Warsaw station and arrival day before paying.
Train categories control the booking rules
The category tells you what you need to book. EIP is Pendolino, EIC is the other premium express category, and IC and TLK cover a broader long-distance network. Your ticket may assign a seat or be sold without a guaranteed one. An EIP supplement and night accommodation are separate purchases, so check what the selected train includes before paying.
A reservation rule remembered from another train is not enough. Read the result for the departure in front of you, including its number, class, seat or accommodation and any EIP supplement. Second class suits most daytime trips. First class is worth comparing only when the live price gap or a quieter place to work matters.
Rail passes still require a train-specific check
Interrail and Eurail cover participating Polish operators, including PKP Intercity, but not every reservation or supplement. On EIP, pass holders must buy the compulsory reservation and supplement, currently PLN 43. Confirm the charge for your train before paying. For an eligible seat reservation, use a PKP Intercity account and select the pass-holder option.
A pass does not include night accommodation. Book the exact seat, couchette or sleeper, preferably early if you need a proper bed. Koleje Mazowieckie trains and Warsaw's metro, trams and buses need separate local tickets because they are outside the 2026 Interrail participating network. Check the operator on the selected journey rather than assuming the pass covers every train in Poland.
The two airports need different plans
Chopin Airport has a railway station beneath the terminal. SKM line S2 links it with Warszawa Śródmieście, while Koleje Mazowieckie airport trains include Warszawa Centralna among their city stops. Between the two operators, daytime departures are usually about 15 minutes apart and the trip from central Warsaw takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes. Check the selected train and platform because the nearby city-centre stations are not interchangeable. A standard Warsaw public-transport ticket can cover the relevant SKM journey, subject to its line, zone and other conditions. Confirm all three before boarding.
Modlin Airport has no station at the terminal. Koleje Mazowieckie trains run to Modlin station and a branded airport bus handles the final leg, with the complete trip from central Warsaw taking around an hour. The one-way Airport Ticket currently costs PLN 22.40 and combines the train with that bus. Confirm the charge and both legs before paying. Once activated, the ticket also includes 75 minutes of Warsaw Zone 1 public transport on its day of validity.
Protect either airport connection with a proper margin. Centralna and Śródmieście sit beside each other but use different platforms; Modlin adds a bus after the train. Work backwards from the airline's bag-drop deadline using the complete route, not just the first train's arrival time.
Central Warsaw is walkable with the right route
Walking works when the hotel is close to Centralna and your bags are manageable. For the Old Town, Metro M1 from Centrum to Ratusz Arsenał cuts out most of the walk. Centrum is on M1, not M2. Check the final address before following the nearest metro symbol.
Warsaw public-transport tickets are timed and apply to the services and zones printed on them. The current full-fare price is PLN 4.40 for 75 minutes and PLN 15 for a 24-hour Zone 1 ticket. Check the current WTP charge before buying, then validate or activate the ticket as instructed and make sure it still covers the next service and zone.
Use a marked rank or a reputable taxi app when heavy luggage, reduced mobility or a late arrival makes road transport worthwhile. Set the destination and confirm the fare basis before the car moves. The Old Town may look close on a map, but that alone is not a reason to take a taxi.
Centralna needs a little platform preparation
Sort out food and luggage before heading down to a long-distance platform. Centralna has ticket offices, food outlets, toilets and luggage storage, although opening hours and payment methods can change. If you need a particular service late in the day, check it before setting off.
All four platforms have step-free access. Passenger assistance, accessible toilets and an adapted ticket counter are also available. The accessible route may take longer than the nearest stairs, so request help in advance through the relevant railway service and leave time to reach the meeting point.
Popular EIP trains, sleeper space and engineering work can all upset a tight connection. Give the scarcest or most vulnerable part of the trip the largest margin. Shortly before travel, check the live departure board and service alerts once more.
