Use Kraków Główny for most rail journeys, then check the train category, seat reservation and final city connection before paying.
Kraków Główny is the default station
Choose Kraków Główny for most long-distance journeys and the clearest arrival in the city centre. The station is beside Galeria Krakowska, about a ten-minute walk from the main market square. Check the full station name before paying. A suburban Kraków stop is useful only when your train calls there and it genuinely suits your final address.
The passenger concourse sits below the platforms. Galeria Krakowska gives access from the west, while the MDA bus station is on the eastern side. Lifts and escalators connect the concourse with every platform, but a change still involves a walk below the tracks. Allow for it.
Polish departure information uses peron for the platform and tor for the track beside it. Read both numbers. Check the live display shortly before boarding because the assigned platform or track can change.
The right exit saves a needless city transfer
Walk from Kraków Główny to a hotel in the Old Town unless luggage or limited mobility makes another option more practical. The main market square is close enough that a tram often adds more effort than it saves. For districts beyond the centre, use Dworzec Główny Tunel beneath the railway lines and check the final stop before boarding.
A full-fare KMK ticket costs PLN 4 for 15 minutes, PLN 6 for 30 minutes or one journey, and PLN 8 for 60 minutes. Buy enough time for the whole trip. Check the current fare and whether your ticket needs activation or onboard validation before you travel. A change or delay can push the shortest ticket beyond its validity.
The official taxi rank is on parking level 1 above the platforms. Follow the signs upwards. Leaving at street level first only makes the pickup harder to find.
Warsaw trains reward a category check
Direct PKP Intercity trains link Kraków with Warsaw. Fast EIP services take roughly 2 hours 30 minutes, while some EIC, IC and TLK options take closer to four hours. Compare arrival time with the fare. A slower train can make sense when the saving matters more than an extra hour or so.
EIP, EIC, IC and TLK are separate PKP Intercity categories. EIP is the high-speed option on this route; the other categories provide alternatives at different times and prices. Facilities can differ by train and route, so open the details for your departure before choosing.
Wrocław, Gdańsk and Poznań are other useful domestic corridors from Kraków. Journey times differ considerably by departure. A direct train is usually the better choice, but inspect the itinerary before paying so that a hidden change does not undo a small fare saving.
Polish pass rules depend on the train category
For a PKP Intercity point-to-point ticket, check the train number, class and seat on the confirmation. Compare categories before paying. Two Kraków to Warsaw results can have very different journey times and reservation rules.
Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on participating Polish trains, but the pass alone does not guarantee a seat. EIP requires a reservation and a supplement. A pass-holder EIP booking made through PKP Intercity or at a Polish station costs PLN 43 and includes the seat reservation. Confirm the current supplement when you reserve.
EIC reservations are recommended. Reservations are also recommended on IC and TLK, but they are compulsory on selected services marked [R] in the timetable. Check the exact departure in the PKP Intercity or Rail Planner timetable. This prevents two common mistakes: paying the EIP supplement without intending to use EIP, or arriving without a compulsory reservation for an [R] train.
International trains use different operators and rules
Kraków has direct international trains, but each corridor follows its own timetable and booking rules. Prague has direct daytime trains with through coaches. Vienna has one direct daytime train and a night train, while Berlin has three direct EuroCity departures a day taking around seven hours. Engineering work can alter the route or replace part of a journey, so check the selected date before committing to a tight onward connection.
The Prague through coaches can carry different train numbers on different parts of the journey. Focus on the coach and destination shown in the booking rather than assuming that a new train number means a change. For Vienna and Berlin, confirm the operator and reservation rule for the exact departure.
A daily EuroNight runs from Munich through Salzburg, Linz and Vienna to Kraków and Warsaw. Book the accommodation you actually want. A couchette or sleeper is more practical than a seat when sleep matters. Confirm the train, accommodation and pass-holder reservation before paying.
The airport train needs its own ticket
Use the SKA1 train between Kraków Airport and Kraków Główny. The airport station is beside the terminal and connected by a covered footbridge. Trips usually take about 17 to 18 minutes, and a single ticket between the airport and Kraków Główny costs PLN 20. Trains generally run about every 30 minutes, but check the live departure and current fare before buying.
Buy from Koleje Małopolskie or an accepted app, or use the onboard machine or conductor. An ordinary KMK city ticket does not cover this airport journey. The 70-minute combined KMK and Koleje Małopolskie ticket also excludes Kraków Airport, so check the destination printed on the ticket before boarding.
SKA1 links Kraków Airport, Kraków Główny and Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. If you plan to continue to Wieliczka, make sure that your departure runs through and buy a ticket for the full journey. The line name does not prove that every train serves every stop.
Accessibility and luggage affect connection time
Kraków Główny has lifts and escalators between the concourse and every platform. Ticket offices, self-service machines, a PKP Intercity customer centre, lockers and staffed left luggage are available in the station complex. Check service hours and the route through the station before relying on a tight connection or leaving a large suitcase.
Request assistance through the train operator at least 24 hours before travel. PKP asks assisted passengers to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure and use the signed meeting point in the main hall. Confirm the current notice period, requested arrival time, meeting point and train details when booking assistance.
Rail day trips need a final-leg plan
For Wieliczka Salt Mine, take a direct Koleje Małopolskie train to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia. The trip from Kraków Główny usually takes about 23 to 25 minutes, and the station is close to the mine. Check the return before going underground. Waiting until the visit ends can leave you with a long gap.
For the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, travel to Oświęcim and plan the final 1.5 km separately. Koleje Małopolskie trains from Kraków Główny can take a little over an hour, but the railway station is not the visitor entrance. Match the train with your booked entry before booking either part.
Zakopane needs more of the day. Some direct regional trains take just under three hours, and the pattern changes by season. Compare the outward train with the last practical return before deciding whether rail leaves enough useful time there.

Is Kraków Główny station open overnight?
Yes. The station is open around the clock, although access to parts of the commercial passage is restricted overnight. Check the particular counter or shop before relying on it late at night.
Is luggage free on the Kraków Airport train?
Yes. Ordinary luggage is carried free on the SKA1 airport train. Keep it clear of doors and aisles so you can board without blocking other passengers.
Can I show a PKP Intercity ticket on my phone?
Yes. You can show a PKP Intercity ticket on a mobile screen or print it. Carry identification and, when relevant, proof of your fare discount.
Can a Kraków city ticket be used on local trains?
A standard KMK ticket does not cover local trains. The 70-minute KMK+KMŁ ticket is valid only on specified sections in Kraków and Wieliczka. Eligible Metropolitan Tickets cover local trains within the zones you buy. The 70-minute ticket does not cover the airport.
