Budapest has several useful stations. Match the exact station to your train before paying, especially for international and overnight journeys.
Choose the station printed on the ticket
Budapest does not have one interchangeable central terminal. Keleti, Nyugati, Déli and Kelenföld serve different routes and parts of the city. Open the full journey details before paying and note the complete station name for both departure and arrival.
A search result may show only Budapest at first. Engineering work can also move a train from its usual terminal to another Budapest station. Check the ticket again shortly before travel so you do not create an avoidable cross-city transfer with luggage.
Keleti is the usual choice for Vienna
Keleti is the regular Budapest terminal for the hourly international route through Győr to Vienna. Direct trains continue towards Salzburg or Munich, and many call at Kelenföld on their way out of the city. Start with Keleti when searching west, then use the station printed for the exact departure.
Metro lines M2 and M4 serve Keleti. Check the platform after you arrive because assignments can change. A platform number remembered from an earlier journey is not a safe shortcut.
Kelenföld may be a better stop if your train calls there and you are staying in southern Buda. Keleti suits much of central Pest. Decide between them by looking at the complete journey to your accommodation, not the time spent on the train alone.
Nyugati serves Bratislava and Prague
Direct daytime trains leave Nyugati for Bratislava and Prague. The faster services take about 2 hours 25 minutes to Bratislava and roughly 6 hours 50 minutes to Prague. Use those times for orientation, then check the exact train because engineering work can alter the terminal or timing.
The Metropol EuroNight also uses Nyugati, with direct carriages towards Prague, Berlin and Warsaw. This is the exception that catches people who assume every international train uses Keleti. Confirm the train number and the full Budapest station name before setting out.
Metro line M3 serves Nyugati, and trams 4 and 6 stop on the Grand Boulevard outside. To travel from Keleti, take M2 to Deák Ferenc tér and change to M3. Leave enough time for the interchange and the walk to the platform because the two terminals are not adjacent.
Déli and Kelenföld suit different Buda journeys
Déli is useful for domestic trains towards Lake Balaton and western Hungary. Metro line M2 serves the station. Search the lakeside town you actually need because the right Budapest departure and train pattern depend on the shore, destination and season.
Kelenföld is on the main line west from Budapest and has a connection to metro line M4. International trains towards Vienna and domestic trains towards western Hungary commonly call there. It is a handy shortcut for southern Buda, but only when the booked train stops.
Check the arrival as carefully as the departure. A hotel near Keleti does not make Keleti the right endpoint if the train uses Nyugati. Nor is a lower fare helpful if it adds a difficult transfer across Budapest.
International routes need more than a time check
Direct trains between Budapest and Vienna run hourly. A regular daytime trip from Keleti to Wien Hauptbahnhof takes about 2 hours 50 minutes, while starting or finishing at Kelenföld cuts roughly 25 minutes from the rail journey.
Limited, train-specific START Europa tickets from Budapest to Vienna start at €13 in second class. The lowest tier is non-refundable and can sell out. Compare the conditions as well as the price, especially when your plans may change.
Bratislava and Prague also have direct daytime trains from Nyugati. Some trains from Keleti continue through Vienna to Munich without a change, while other results include a connection. Choose by station, total journey time and connection risk rather than assuming every option works the same way.
EuroNight accommodation needs a separate booking
Budapest's main western and northern overnight trains are EuroNight services run by MÁV with partner railways. Direct overnight links include Zurich, Stuttgart via Munich, Berlin, Prague and Warsaw. Do not assume the train is a Nightjet just because ÖBB appears during the search, as the service name affects the booking route and rules.
Most of these trains offer seats, couchettes or sleepers, although the mix differs by route. Choose the accommodation you can rest in, then reserve it. Interrail and Eurail pass holders still need a night-train reservation, and the pass must be valid for the journey.
Book earlier when you want a couchette, sleeper or private compartment. Buying only the pass or base fare can leave you without the separate place or bed required for that train.
Tickets, passes and reservations are separate products
MÁV is the main booking point for domestic journeys and many international trains starting in Hungary. ÖBB is also useful for the Vienna route and journeys continuing through Austria. Compare the operator, station pair and ticket conditions before choosing where to buy.
Domestic MÁV fares and Budapest transport prices are shown in HUF. International MÁV night-train fares are set in EUR, although Hungarian sales channels can collect the converted amount in HUF. Keep each operator's currency so you do not confuse a full ticket with a reservation fee.
A normal daytime Railjet ticket does not automatically include a seat reservation. ÖBB recommends reservations on long-distance trains, but they are not generally compulsory on the Vienna route. Night-train accommodation and reservations on some Hungarian InterCity trains can be compulsory, so read the category shown for the exact train.
Interrail and Eurail passes are accepted on participating MÁV services, but reservations and supplements cost extra. Buy any required extra before boarding. A reservation on its own is not a travel ticket either.
The 100E bus is the direct airport option
Budapest Airport has no railway station at Terminal 2. Ferihegy is the nearest rail stop, and bus 200E covers the final section to the terminal. For a direct public-transport journey between the airport and central Budapest, take the 100E Airport Express to Kálvin tér or Deák Ferenc tér, then continue by metro to the station on your ticket.
The standard 100E airport-shuttle ticket costs HUF 2,500 and covers one uninterrupted trip on that bus. It does not include a metro transfer. Buy it in BudapestGO, from a BKK machine or sales point, or by bank card through Pay&GO on the bus.
The airport-to-centre journey takes about 40 minutes, and the bus runs around the clock. Add time for traffic, the metro connection and the walk inside the railway station. A tight train connection is a poor place to save that margin.
Domestic trips start with the destination
Lake Balaton is not one station. Direct trains run from Déli towards both shores, including Siófok and Keszthely on the south shore and Balatonfüred on the north shore. Some extra trains and stopping patterns are seasonal, so search the actual town and check the return before committing to a day trip.
Debrecen and Szeged are useful InterCity examples from Budapest. Faster Budapest to Debrecen journeys take about 2 hours 35 minutes, while the Napfény InterCity to Szeged takes about 2 hours 25 minutes. Check the Budapest station carefully because engineering work can move or shorten some departures, and the ticket may require an InterCity place reservation.
Domestic fares and separate reservations should appear in HUF. Confirm the outward and return trains together, especially for an evening journey, instead of assuming both directions use the same station and service pattern.
Three Hungarian words make the boards easier
Indulás means departures, Érkezés means arrivals, and Vágány means platform. Match the train number as well as the destination because the board may show an intermediate or final station that is not the city where you get off.
Check the platform after reaching the correct station and again before boarding. The station check prevents the expensive mistake. The platform display prevents the last-minute one.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Budapest pass on the 100E Airport Express?
Most valid Budapest passes, plus Pest County and Hungary passes, qualify for the HUF 1,000 add-on ticket instead of the standard HUF 2,500 fare. The 15-day Budapest pass is excluded, so check your pass type before buying.
Do children and older travellers pay on the 100E bus?
Travellers over 65 can ride free with proof of age. Students under 14 also travel free when they show a Hungarian student identity card. Other children should check the fare that applies to their documents.
Can one bank card buy several 100E tickets with Pay&GO?
Yes. Pay&GO allows one bank card or compatible device to buy up to five airport-shuttle tickets at a time on the bus. The payment also validates the tickets, so the card or device becomes the inspection record.
Does a bicycle need a reservation on trains to Lake Balaton?
Sometimes. Buy a bicycle ticket and a bicycle-space reservation when the timetable marks the train with an R. Reservations are particularly important around Lake Balaton from spring to autumn, so check the bicycle symbols for the exact train.
Do travellers aged 14 to 25 get cheaper domestic MÁV tickets?
Yes. Travellers aged 14 to 25 receive a 50% discount on eligible domestic fares. The discount applies to the fare, while a compulsory InterCity seat reservation or other train-specific extra may still be charged separately. Check the full price for the chosen train.
