For most trips, choose Bratislava hlavná stanica; use Bratislava-Petržalka when your exact train or south-bank plans make it useful.
Choose Bratislava hlavná stanica by default
Bratislava hlavná stanica is the main station and the right arrival for most visitors. Prague, Budapest and domestic long-distance trains normally call here, and city transport runs straight towards the centre. Choose it unless your timetable names Bratislava-Petržalka or you are staying south of the Danube.
Read the complete station name before paying. A search result headed only "Bratislava" is not enough because the city has several passenger stations. This is especially important with separate tickets. An unexpected station change can turn an easy connection into a cross-city transfer.
Choose Bratislava-Petržalka for the route, not the headline time
Bratislava-Petržalka is useful for trains running through Kittsee and for travellers staying in Petržalka. It is a separate arrival from the main station, so plan the city leg before choosing it.
Buses 93 and 94 connect the station with Zochova, close to the Old Town. Compare the complete journey rather than the time spent on the train. Before booking, check the arrival station, your accommodation and the return station together.
Vienna has two regional routes
REX regional trains link Vienna and Bratislava about twice an hour in total, and the journey takes roughly one hour. The two routes run through Marchegg and Kittsee. Search results can show either Bratislava hlavná stanica or Bratislava-Petržalka, so check the whole itinerary before choosing a departure.
Seat reservations are not required on these regional trains. You do need a valid ticket before boarding an ÖBB REX service. Interrail and Eurail users can travel without a separate seat reservation, but must still add the exact train to their pass and check the operator in the journey details.
For a day trip, compare ordinary tickets with ÖBB's Bratislava Ticket. It covers one outward and one return trip on the regional routes through Marchegg or Kittsee, plus Bratislava public transport on the first day of validity. The ticket is for second-class regional travel. Do not use it for a Railjet or InterCity departure without checking the product and train category first.
Prague and Budapest trains use the main station
Start with Bratislava hlavná stanica when travelling from Prague. České dráhy runs direct EuroCity Metropolitan trains about every two hours, with a journey of around four hours. RegioJet also runs direct trains through Brno. Compare the operator as well as the departure time because their ticket and reservation rules differ.
Interrail and Eurail Passes are valid on RegioJet's Prague to Bratislava RJ trains, but a seat reservation is compulsory. RegioJet charges pass holders from €1.30 in Low Cost to €2.80 in Relax. Business is available to first-class pass holders. These are reservation fees, not full ticket fares.
Direct Metropolitan trains link Bratislava hlavná stanica with Budapest-Nyugati in about 2 hours 40 minutes. Budapest has several main stations, and engineering work can change the terminal. Confirm Budapest-Nyugati and Bratislava hlavná stanica on the exact departure.
Domestic trains leave from the main station
Use Bratislava hlavná stanica for the main ZSSK route towards Žilina, Poprad-Tatry and Košice. Fast trains take roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes to Žilina, about 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours to Poprad-Tatry, and around 4 hours 50 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes to Košice. Train category and engineering work can change the exact time, so use these as planning ranges.
Poprad-Tatry is the useful station for onward rail travel in the High Tatras. Check the arrival and the next train as one itinerary, especially when the second journey is on a separate ticket. A tight mountain connection based only on the headline range leaves little room for disruption.
Reservation rules depend on the train. Pass holders need a reservation on the direct InterCity service between Vienna, Bratislava and Košice. The reservation fee is €3 in either class. Other ZSSK express trains can have compulsory-reservation coaches or different rules. Open the details for your departure rather than applying the InterCity rule to every domestic train.
Match city transport to the station
From Bratislava hlavná stanica, tram 1 runs through the centre, while bus 93 serves Hodžovo námestie and Zochova. From Bratislava-Petržalka, buses 93 and 94 are the clearest links towards Zochova. Routes can change during works. Check the live stop display before leaving the station.
Bratislava city tickets are time-based across zones 100 and 101. A 30-minute paper ticket costs €1.20, while the electronic fare is €1.09. Validate a paper ticket when you start the journey. App and contactless tickets use their own activation instructions, so finish that step before travelling.
Book through the company running the train
Use ÖBB for the Vienna regional routes and the Bratislava Ticket, ZSSK for domestic Slovak trains, České dráhy for EuroCity Metropolitan, and RegioJet for its trains and pass-holder reservations. This puts the operator's fare conditions and reservation status in front of you.
Full ticket fares depend on the departure and demand. Compare the live full fare, its exchange conditions and any separate reservation charge. A low headline amount is no bargain if it ties you to a train that no longer suits the trip.
Save the return station before leaving
Save the return train and station before starting a day trip. Bratislava hlavná stanica and Bratislava-Petržalka are not interchangeable at the last minute, even when both appear under the same city name.
Check the timetable again shortly before travel. Works can affect the cross-border rail routes and local transport, so leave time for the journey back to the station and follow the operator shown for your departure.
