ZSSK trains
Last reviewed: August 2026
Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko, known as ZSSK, is Slovakia's state passenger rail operator, running the national network from a hub at Bratislava's main station, Bratislava hlavná stanica. Travelling by train inside Slovakia, or on many cross-border services connecting into the country, you'll most often be booking with ZSSK, alongside two private competitors, LEO Express and RegioJet, which run their own separate international services on some of the same corridors.
Domestic reservation rules change by train category, and this is where travellers get caught out most often. On EuroCity (EC) and InterCity (IC) trains, a seat reservation is required, not optional, so you can't simply board with a ticket or pass and expect a seat to be there. On Express (Ex), Rýchlik (R) and Regionálny Rýchlik (RR) trains, reservations are only compulsory in 1st class; 2nd class passengers can board freely. Regional and commuter services, REX and Osobný vlak (Os), don't need reservations at all. Fees for the trains that do require one are modest by comparison: reservation fees through ZSSK run from around €1 to €25 depending on the train and class, with EuroCity typically the cheapest at around €1.
ZSSK also operates Slovakia's premium and international long-distance trains. RailJet services run Bratislava to Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Zurich. SuperCity services link Košice, Poprad and Žilina with Ostrava and Prague. EuroCity and EuroNight services connect Bratislava and Košice with Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Kraków and Warsaw. On EuroNight sleeper trains specifically, book your reservation well before a popular departure, because sleeper and couchette places sell out faster than ordinary seats, and a reservation you leave until the last minute may simply not be available.
Interrail and Eurail pass holders can reserve ZSSK trains through the Interrail reservation self-service system, which covers R, Ex, IC, EC, SC, RailJet and EuroNight categories, or book directly with ZSSK. Administration costs through the Interrail system run around €2 per person per train, plus a separate fee if you need a paper ticket. The practical rule to remember: check the train category before you travel. An unreserved Rýchlik in 2nd class is fine to board as-is, but the same pass won't get you onto a EuroCity or InterCity service without a reservation bought in advance.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a seat reservation on ZSSK EuroCity or InterCity trains?
Yes, a reservation is compulsory on both EC and IC services, so a ticket or pass alone won't guarantee you a seat. Fees for these run from around €1 for EuroCity up to €25 depending on the train and class.
Do I need to reserve a seat in 2nd class on a ZSSK Rýchlik (R) train?
No, reservations on Express, Rýchlik and Regionálny Rýchlik trains are only compulsory in 1st class. In 2nd class you can board freely without booking ahead.
How do Interrail and Eurail pass holders book reservations on ZSSK trains?
Through the Interrail reservation self-service system, which covers R, Ex, IC, EC, SC, RailJet and EuroNight categories, or directly with ZSSK. The self-service system charges an administration fee of around €2 per person per train, plus an extra fee if you need a paper ticket.
