Regensburg Hbf is the station for the old town and for almost every train in the city, and it lies a walk of about 15 minutes from the Rathausplatz. Regional trains run to Munich, Nuremberg and Prague, while long-distance trains are few and the line to Passau is closed until December 2026.

Arriving at Regensburg Hbf

The station has a DB information desk open daily from 06:00 to 22:30, including public holidays, and an agilis customer centre. Most trains here are regional express (RE) and regional (RB) services run by agilis, Die Länderbahn under the alex name, and DB.

Trains from Regensburg Hbf

Munich Hbf takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. Two regional express lines, the RE 2 and the RE 25, each leave about every two hours, and both run via Landshut and Freising. The RE 22 runs to Munich Airport via Burgweinting and Landshut about every hour.

Nürnberg Hbf takes about 1 hour on the agilis RE 22 and RE 50 via Neumarkt. The hourly RE 40 goes the long way round via Schwandorf and takes about 1 hour 35 minutes. Long-distance service is thin: one ICE a day runs via Nuremberg, Würzburg and Frankfurt to Cologne and Dortmund, and one IC a day via Nuremberg and Stuttgart to Karlsruhe.

The RE 25 is the direct train to Prague. It leaves about every two hours, calls at Schwandorf and Cham, and takes a little over 4 hours. In the current timetable most of these trains end at Praha-Vysočany rather than Praha hl.n.; only the late-afternoon and early-evening departures run through to the main station. The RE 23 and RB 23 serve Schwandorf, Weiden and Marktredwitz, and the RB 17 runs to Ingolstadt.

Passau is the big gap. DB has closed the line from Obertraubling to Passau from 14 June to 12 December 2026, so regional trains to Straubing, Plattling and Passau are replaced by RE 50 buses from Regensburg Hbf, about 2 hours 20 minutes to Passau. Three non-stop buses a day reach Passau Hbf in 1 hour 30 minutes, and these need a seat reservation. The ICE from Vienna through Passau to Nuremberg is cancelled for the same period, so journeys between Vienna and Nuremberg go via Munich.

From the station to the old town

Walk from the station forecourt along Maximilianstraße, then turn left into Grasgasse to reach the Rathausplatz in about 15 minutes. The cathedral is a few minutes east of the Rathausplatz, and the Steinerne Brücke a few minutes north, on the Danube.

The Altstadtbus line A leaves from stop E outside the Hauptbahnhof, stops at Alter Kornmarkt, Domplatz, Altes Rathaus and Haidplatz, and ends at Arnulfsplatz. It takes about 5 minutes to Altes Rathaus, it is free, and it runs Monday to Saturday in the daytime only. On Sundays, walk, or take city bus 1, 2, 4, 6, 11, 13 or 17 to Fischmarkt, near the Rathausplatz.

Tickets and the Deutschlandticket

RVV single tickets cost €3.30 from machines and sales points. Many city buses take no cash; on those, and in the RVV app, the single ticket costs €2.97. A short hop of up to three stops on a city bus costs €1.50 in the app.

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month. It covers regional trains and local buses, so it works on the regional trains and city buses described here. It is not valid on ICE, IC or EC trains. Since 1 January 2026 the RVV tariff no longer applies on agilis trains between Sinzing and Münchsmünster, so use a Deutschlandticket or a Bavaria-wide fare on that stretch.

The other Regensburg stations

Regensburg-Prüfening is a small stop on the line to Ingolstadt and Neumarkt, served by agilis RB 17 and RB 51 trains, plus the weekend RE 18. It is not within walking distance of the old town.

Regensburg-Burgweinting is a suburban stop served until 12 December 2026 only by the agilis RE 22 towards Landshut and Munich Airport. Use it only if you are staying in that district.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, an Interrail Pass covers ICE and IC trains in Germany. A seat reservation on the ICE is optional and costs €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first. IC trains and regional trains need no reservation, which covers the RE and RB services from Regensburg to Munich, Nuremberg and Schwandorf. An Interrail Global Pass covers the whole RE 25 trip to Prague. A One Country Pass Germany is valid only in Germany, so with that pass you also need a ticket for the Czech part of the journey.
