Düsseldorf Hbf is the station for the city centre, ICE, Eurostar and most regional trains. The airport has two separate stations with near-identical names.
Düsseldorf Hbf
Around 1,200 local, regional and intercity trains call at Düsseldorf Hbf every day. ICE trains reach Cologne in about 24 minutes and Dortmund in 1 hour 5 minutes. Eurostar runs from Brussels in about 2 hours 15 minutes, and some trains carry on to Essen and Dortmund. FlixTrain stops here on its Cologne to Hamburg and Cologne to Berlin routes.
Regional trains cover the Rhine and Ruhr. National Express runs the RE 1 between Hamm and Aachen. eurobahn runs the RE 3 to Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund and Hamm, and the RE 13 between Venlo and Hamm via Mönchengladbach, Wuppertal and Hagen. VIAS runs the RE 19 to Duisburg, Wesel and Arnhem. Until 4 December 2026, building work between Düsseldorf Hbf and Köln-Mülheim diverts or cancels some RE 1, RE 5, S 6 and S 11 trains, so leave extra time on the Cologne side.
From the station to the Altstadt
You can reach the Altstadt by U-Bahn. Lifts down to the U-Bahn are on both sides of the concourse between staircases 7 and 9, next to the travel centre. Take the U75 towards Neuss, the U76 towards Krefeld, the U78 towards the Messe, the U79 towards Duisburg or the U80 towards the airport to Heinrich-Heine-Allee, the city's main interchange after the Hbf and a stop on the edge of the Altstadt. A single Rheinbahn ticket at price level A costs €3.80 for an adult and is valid for 90 minutes.
The two airport stations
Düsseldorf Flughafen is the long-distance station, at the eastern end of the airport grounds. ICE and regional trains stop here, among them the RE 3 and RE 19. It is not at the terminal: the SkyTrain covers the last stretch in 7 minutes, running from 03:45 to 00:45 every 5 to 7 minutes. Luggage carts are not allowed on board.
Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal is the S-Bahn stop below the terminal building. The S11 runs from Bergisch Gladbach through Düsseldorf Hbf and takes around 12 minutes from the Hbf to the terminal. For a flight it saves the SkyTrain ride. Use Düsseldorf Flughafen when the train you need does not stop at the Terminal station.
Düsseldorf-Bilk and Düsseldorf-Derendorf
Düsseldorf-Bilk, south of the centre, is served by the S8, S11 and S28 S-Bahn lines and by several RE and RB trains, including the RE 13 to Venlo and Hamm. The S11 runs from here straight to the airport terminal, and the U-Bahn station Bilk S connects to Heinrich-Heine-Allee. Düsseldorf-Derendorf is an S-Bahn station served by the S1, S6 and S11.
Tickets
The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month as of October 2026. It is valid on regional trains (RB and RE), S-Bahn, buses, trams and the U-Bahn, so it works on the RE trains above, the S11 and Rheinbahn travel in the city. It is not valid on ICE, IC, EC, Eurostar or FlixTrain, although it pays for the local stretches before or after a long-distance ride. It is a monthly subscription, cancellable by the 10th of each month.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, an Interrail Pass covers DB long-distance trains, the S-Bahn and regional trains. Regional trains need no reservation. A seat reservation on ICE and IC is optional and costs €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first. Eurostar needs a reservation at the pass-holder fare: from Brussels €27 in Standard or €32 in Plus, from Paris €32 or €37, and those seats are limited. FlixTrain is not included in the pass.
