Nürnberg Hbf is the station for almost every visit to Nuremberg: ICE, IC, regional trains and the S-Bahn all call there, and Königstraße leads from the station into the old town.

Arriving at Nürnberg Hbf

The DB travel centre and information desk are open daily from 06:00 to 00:00, and the station has luggage lockers. The U-Bahn lines U1 and U2 stop here. Ticket machines for city transport stand in the central hall and in the travel centre, and VGN tickets are also sold at the DB ticket machines.

Trains to and from Nuremberg

The fastest ICE services in the timetable valid until 12 December 2026 reach Munich Hbf in about 1 hour 10 minutes (before the works from 30 October, see below), Berlin Hbf in about 2 hours 45 minutes, Frankfurt (Main) Hbf in just over 2 hours and Hamburg Hbf in about 4 hours 25 minutes. Erfurt Hbf takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, Würzburg Hbf about 55 minutes and Bamberg under 40 minutes. IC trains to Stuttgart Hbf and Karlsruhe Hbf leave about every two hours.

Regional trains fill in the rest. agilis runs the RE 22 and RE 50 to Neumarkt and Regensburg Hbf, which take about 1 hour (RE 22) to 1 hour 10 minutes (RE 50), and the RE 22 carries on to Landshut and Munich Airport. Arverio runs the RE 90 to Stuttgart Hbf via Ansbach and Crailsheim in about 2 hours 30 minutes. DB Regio's RE 1 is the slow way to Munich, via Ingolstadt, in about 1 hour 50 minutes; during the works from 30 October it runs via Roth and takes about the same time.

ÖBB Nightjets call at Nürnberg Hbf in the small hours until 30 October 2026: towards Hamburg and Amsterdam at about 01:40, towards Vienna at 03:21 and towards Innsbruck at 04:17.

Works between Nuremberg and Munich

From 30 October to 12 December 2026, building work between Nuremberg and Munich changes the timetable. ICE trains between Nuremberg and Munich that run via Ingolstadt take about 30 minutes longer, some ICE services from the north and Frankfurt end in Nuremberg instead of Munich, and there is no direct ICE between Munich and Frankfurt via Nuremberg. ICE trains between Nuremberg and Berlin run as normal. ICE line 18 via Augsburg keeps running as usual. After the night of 29 to 30 October the Nightjets no longer stop in Nuremberg; the northbound trains from Munich run via Augsburg and Würzburg instead.

From the station to the old town

Königstraße runs through the pedestrian zone to the Hauptmarkt and the town hall, and Burgstraße continues to the Kaiserburg. The city centre is about 5 minutes on foot or one or two stops on the U1 towards Fürth Hauptbahnhof, getting off at Lorenzkirche or Weißer Turm, and the Historical Town Hall is about 15 minutes on foot. If you ride, the U1 stop Lorenzkirche leaves a walk of about 5 minutes to the town hall.

A single ticket within Nuremberg costs €3.90 and is valid for 90 minutes. A short-trip ticket costs €2.10 and covers two U-Bahn stops or four by tram or bus. Buy at the machines in the central hall or the travel centre, or in the VGN and NürnbergMobil apps. The Nürnberg Card costs €28 and includes two days of public transport and museum entry.

The airport

The U2 runs from Nürnberg Hbf to the airport in 13 minutes, usually every ten minutes from 04:30 to 00:30. The airport lies in the same price level A, so the €3.90 single ticket applies.

The other stations

Nürnberg-Steinbühl is the first stop after Nürnberg Hbf on the S-Bahn towards Fürth and Schwabach, about 2 minutes away. Nürnberg Ost is served by the regional trains RB 30 and RB 31 towards Hersbruck and Simmelsdorf, about 5 minutes from Nürnberg Hbf. Nürnberg-Dutzendteich is the S-Bahn station for the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Documentation Centre, which has been in trial operation since 22 May 2026 and opens officially on 4 November 2026. For the old town, stay on until Nürnberg Hbf.

Tickets and the Deutschlandticket

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month. It covers regional trains in second class, the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses, so it works for the airport, Nürnberg Ost and the other stations. It does not cover ICE, IC or EC trains. It is a monthly subscription that you can cancel by the 10th for the end of that month.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, an Interrail Pass covers ICE and IC trains in Germany, where a seat reservation is optional and costs €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first. The Nightjet, which stops here until 30 October 2026, needs a paid reservation priced by berth and date; to Vienna or Innsbruck you need a Global Pass, because a One Country Pass for Germany does not cover the journey into Austria. Regional trains, the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn need no reservation.
