Bamberg has one station, on the ICE line between Munich, Nuremberg and Berlin. It sits about a kilometre outside the old town, so most visitors walk in or ride one short bus.

Which station to use

Every train calls at Bamberg's single station on Ludwigstraße. It has a DB Reisezentrum (open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 13:00), toilets, lockers, a bike parking house and taxis. ICE trains toward Nuremberg and Munich use platform 3, and those toward Erfurt and Berlin use platform 6. If you need step-free access, book assistance in advance with DB's Mobility Service Centre (MSZ).

Trains to and from Bamberg

ICE trains to Erfurt, Leipzig and Berlin leave about once an hour in the daytime. Erfurt is about 40 minutes away and Berlin Hbf about 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes.

ICE trains reach Nuremberg in about 35 minutes. Direct ICE to Munich take about 1 hour 50 minutes via Ingolstadt or about 2 hours 25 minutes via Augsburg. From 31 October to 12 December 2026 the trains via Ingolstadt end at Nuremberg, so only the Augsburg trains run through to Munich.

The RE 14 runs south to Nuremberg, about 40 minutes away, and north to Saalfeld. DB Regio's other lines from Bamberg are the RE 19 to Coburg and Sonneberg, the RE 20 to Schweinfurt and Würzburg, the RE 28 to Lichtenfels and Coburg, the RE 29 to Coburg and Erfurt and the RB 25 to Lichtenfels and Kronach. Other regional trains run to Bayreuth, Kulmbach and Hof via Lichtenfels. The S1 S-Bahn connects Bamberg with Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg. Agilis runs RB 26 to Ebern and to Forchheim, with one weekday morning train (RB 22) on to Ebermannstadt.

From the station to the old town

The old town is about 1 km away. The walk takes around 15 minutes along Königstraße and Luitpoldstraße. With luggage, take a city bus from the Bahnhof/Ludwigstraße stop, where there is a ticket machine. Line 901 runs to the Schranne stop, a short walk from the tourist information office on Geyerswörthstraße, and any bus marked ZOB reaches the central bus station on the island, from where the tourist office is a 5 to 10 minute walk.

A single bus ticket costs €2.60 and is valid for 60 minutes in one direction within Bamberg. You can buy it from the machine, from the driver with cash, card or phone, or in the VGN app. Day tickets cost €5.60 for one person. The ZOB has 34 lockers, from €1 for the first 4 hours.

Tickets and the Deutschlandticket

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month. It covers regional trains (RE, RB and S-Bahn) in second class and local buses. It is not valid on ICE, IC, EC or FlixTrain, and the Stadtwerke Bamberg do not sell it, so buy it online as an app subscription.

A DB Flexpreis ticket to or from Bamberg includes the City-Ticket, so city buses in Bamberg are free on your day of arrival or departure. With a Sparpreis or Super Sparpreis you can add it when booking for an extra charge.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, an Interrail pass is valid on DB's ICE, IC and regional trains at Bamberg. Regional trains (RE, RB and S-Bahn) need no reservation. On ICE a seat reservation is optional: €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first. It is worth paying on busy Munich and Berlin trains.

Traps to avoid

  • The station is not in the old town. Follow Luitpoldstraße in, or take a bus toward the ZOB.
  • From 31 October to 12 December 2026, take a Munich ICE via Augsburg: the trains via Ingolstadt end at Nuremberg.
  • A Deutschlandticket does not cover the ICE. If you ride one by mistake you need a separate ticket.
