Lübeck Hbf is the station for the old town and for nearly every train: regional services to Hamburg, Kiel, Lüneburg, Travemünde and Neustadt in Holstein all call there. The other two stations are small regional stops on the edge of the city.
Arriving at Lübeck Hbf
Lübeck Hbf is a regional station, and long-distance connections to Berlin, Munich and beyond start from Hamburg Hbf. The central bus station stands opposite the station, and the old town is within walking distance. Stadtverkehr Lübeck runs the city buses.
Trains from Lübeck Hbf
DB Regio runs the Hamburg trains, the RE 8 and RE 80. Between them they leave every 30 minutes through the day, at 9 and 37 minutes past the hour, every day of the week. The RE 8 takes about 45 minutes to Hamburg Hbf and the RE 80, which stops at Ahrensburg, about 50 minutes. These are the patterns in the timetable valid until 12 December 2026.
Travemünde is the other end of the same line. RE 8 and RB 86 run on to Lübeck-Travemünde Strand, about 23 minutes away, and until 1 November 2026 the RE 80 also continues there at weekends. DB Regio also runs the RB 85 to Neustadt in Holstein and the hourly RE 4 into Mecklenburg, which calls at Lübeck St. Jürgen and reaches Schönberg (Mecklenburg) in about 20 minutes.
erixx runs the RE 83 and RB 84 to Kiel Hbf and Lüneburg. Towards Kiel, via Bad Schwartau and Eutin, trains leave about twice an hour in the daytime and take roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Towards Lüneburg, via Ratzeburg, Mölln and Büchen, there is about one train an hour and the journey takes about 70 minutes. From 19 October to 12 December 2026 the line is closed between Lübeck Hbf and Büchen and replacement buses run instead, so Lüneburg takes longer in that period.
From the station to the old town
Walk past the central bus station towards the Holstentor, the brick gate at the edge of the old town. Cross into the old town island, where the Markt and the Rathaus lie beyond the gate. City buses leave from the central bus station opposite the station. A single ticket in the city of Lübeck costs €3.60 from April 2026, and €2.10 for a child.
The other stations
Lübeck St. Jürgen is the first stop after Lübeck Hbf on the RE 4 towards Schönberg. Lübeck Hochschulstadtteil is the stop for the university district on the erixx RE 83 towards Lüneburg. From 19 October to 12 December 2026 no trains call there; replacement buses leave from the central bus station (stand 13) and stop at Alexander-Fleming-Straße. Neither has the choice of trains or the facilities of Lübeck Hbf; for the university, St. Jürgen is the most reliable stop.
Tickets and the Deutschlandticket
The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month. It covers regional trains, S-Bahn, buses and trams, so it works on every train described here and on Lübeck's city buses. It does not cover ICE, IC, EC or FlixTrain. It is a subscription that you can cancel by the 10th of a month, effective at the end of that month.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, an Interrail pass covers the DB Regio trains in this guide (RE 8, RE 80, RB 85, RB 86 and RE 4) with no reservation. erixx Holstein, which runs the RE 83 and RB 84 to Kiel and Lüneburg, is not named on Interrail's list of accepted regional operators, so buy a regular ticket or use a Deutschlandticket on those trains. No ICE or IC calls at Lübeck Hbf; if you change in Hamburg onto an ICE or IC, a seat reservation is optional and costs €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first.

Frequently asked questions
Do ICE or IC trains stop in Lübeck?
No. Lübeck Hbf is served only by regional trains, and the Hamburg to Copenhagen IC does not stop in Lübeck. For Berlin, Munich and other long-distance trains, change in Hamburg Hbf.
How do I get from Hamburg Airport to Lübeck?
Take the S1 from the terminals to Hamburg Hbf. It runs every 10 minutes and takes about 25 minutes. From Hamburg Hbf, the RE 8 or RE 80 to Lübeck takes about 45 to 50 minutes and leaves every 30 minutes.
How do I get from Lübeck Airport to the station?
Bus 6 leaves every 20 minutes for the central bus station, about 30 minutes away. Normally an erixx train also runs hourly from the Lübeck Flughafen stop to the main station in about 8 minutes, but from 19 October to 12 December 2026 the line is closed and replacement buses run instead, about every 30 minutes.
Which station do I use for the university?
Two stations are about the same distance from the campus. From Lübeck St. Jürgen, one stop and 6 minutes from Lübeck Hbf on the hourly RE 4, follow Mönkhofer Weg for about 1.4 km to the campus entrance. Lübeck Hochschulstadtteil, on the erixx RE 83, is about 1.5 km away, but no trains call there from 19 October to 12 December 2026. From the central bus station, bus 1 goes to the Fachhochschule, bus 6 to the university and bus 9 to the university hospital.
Is there a train to Travemünde beach?
Yes. The RE 8 runs from Hamburg through Lübeck Hbf to Lübeck-Travemünde Strand every hour, and the RB 86 adds trains from Lübeck Hbf; the ride from Lübeck takes about 23 minutes. Until 1 November 2026 the RE 80 also runs through at weekends, so there are two direct trains an hour from Hamburg on Saturdays and Sundays.
