Book Köln Hbf for the cathedral and old town; choose Messe/Deutz for the east bank, then confirm the exact station before paying.
Choose the Cologne station that fits the trip
Use Köln Hauptbahnhof, shown as Köln Hbf, for most visits. Cologne Cathedral is immediately beside the station, so this is the sensible arrival for the cathedral district and old town. Open the journey details before paying and confirm that the ticket names Köln Hbf, not another Cologne station.
Choose Köln Messe/Deutz when your hotel, trade fair or event is on the east bank. The station is directly next to Koelnmesse, and the local rail stops around Deutz also serve Lanxess Arena. It can also be the correct station when your long-distance train is scheduled there rather than at Hbf.
Use Köln/Bonn Flughafen for Cologne Bonn Airport. Köln-Ehrenfeld is another real Cologne station, but it is not a substitute for Hbf unless the live itinerary specifically sends you there. Match the complete station name on every leg to the place you actually need.
Köln Hbf is the default for the city centre
Book Köln Hbf for the cathedral and central sights. The cathedral is next to the station, and the Hohenzollern Bridge begins nearby. Walk first. Taking local transport before checking your hotel pin can add an unnecessary change to a very short final leg.
ICE, IC and EC long-distance trains use Köln Hbf alongside regional trains and the S-Bahn. Eurostar also uses the station for direct trains towards Belgium and France. Check the service shown for your date because engineering work can alter stops, platforms and journey times.
Köln Hbf has staffed DB information, a DB Reisezentrum, luggage lockers and mobility assistance. Use the Reisezentrum for DB tickets and reservations when self-service is not enough. With a tight connection, find the correct platform before stopping for food or other station services.
Messe/Deutz is the east-bank alternative
Choose Köln Messe/Deutz for Koelnmesse, Lanxess Arena or an east-bank hotel. The station is directly beside the exhibition grounds, while the Deutz rail and tram stops also serve the arena. Check the exact venue entrance before choosing between Deutz and Hbf.
Hbf and Messe/Deutz are linked by rail and by the Hohenzollern Bridge. Walking across the bridge can work with light luggage and time to spare. Take the S-Bahn when protecting a connection or carrying a heavy case, and check the next departure rather than assuming an immediate train.
Before paying, expand the details and read the complete arrival and departure stations. If the train uses Messe/Deutz, travelling to Hbf first can waste the margin you need for boarding.
Köln/Bonn Flughafen connects the airport by rail
Use the station named Köln/Bonn Flughafen for Cologne Bonn Airport. The airport has its own ICE and local railway station close to both terminals, and the train to Cologne city centre takes about 15 minutes. Check the exact train and terminal route for your flight date before setting the airport margin.
Do not confuse Cologne Bonn Airport with Frankfurt-Hahn. Frankfurt-Hahn's public-transport connections are based on bus links to cities and onward rail points. Confirm the airport name and code on the flight before buying a rail ticket.
Long-distance trains do call at the airport station, but not every ICE does. A through train can avoid a change at Hbf or Messe/Deutz. Verify the stop in the selected itinerary instead of relying on the train category alone.
Main train routes from Cologne
Use these times as orientation, then check the exact departure. Engineering work can make a particular journey slower or add a change.
| Route from Köln Hbf | Useful orientation | Main pattern to check |
|---|---|---|
| Brussels-Midi | fastest direct trains around 1 hour 50 minutes | Eurostar |
| Paris-Nord | direct trains around 3 hours 20 minutes | Eurostar |
| Amsterdam Centraal | direct trains around 2 hours 40 minutes | ICE |
| London St Pancras | around 6 hours | change at Brussels-Midi |
| Frankfurt (Main) Hbf | fastest direct trains around 1 hour 10 minutes | ICE |
| Hamburg Hbf | direct trains around 4 hours | ICE |
| Berlin Hbf | roughly 4 to 5 hours | direct or one-change itinerary depending on the date |
| Vienna Hbf | overnight on selected dates | ÖBB Nightjet |
For London, leave enough time in Brussels for the Channel Terminal, security and passport checks. Eurostar sells Cologne to London as one booking and directs travellers to change at Brussels-Midi. For Frankfurt Airport, make sure the destination is Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof rather than Frankfurt city centre.
Ticket and reservation rules depend on the train
Identify the operator and train category before relying on a ticket or rail pass. Seat reservations on domestic ICE, IC and EC trains are normally optional. A second-class DB long-distance seat reservation costs €5.50. Check the current fee when you select the seat, especially if sitting together matters.
Eurostar is different for Interrail and Eurail users. A separate pass-holder reservation is required, and the number of pass-holder seats can be limited. Book that reservation before building a fixed onward journey around the train.
ÖBB Nightjet pass holders also need a reservation in the chosen category. Select a seat, couchette or sleeper when booking because the reservation is what secures that place. A rail pass by itself does not reserve a bed.
FlixTrain is excluded from Interrail and Eurail coverage in Germany. Buy a separate FlixTrain ticket if that is the service you choose. The operator name decides whether the pass is valid, even when two trains appear on the same route.
Engineering work can change the Cologne station
Recheck the complete station name when engineering work affects Cologne. A live itinerary may show Köln Hbf, Köln Messe/Deutz or Köln-Ehrenfeld, and a past diversion pattern is not evidence for a new travel date. Follow the updated journey details for the booked train.
Check once the day before travel and again before leaving for the station. Look for a changed station, platform, replacement service or cancelled train. If a compulsory Eurostar or Nightjet reservation follows the disrupted leg, allow extra connection time and check what the operator will do if the first train is late.
Köln-Ehrenfeld is not staffed for advice or mobility assistance. If a changed itinerary sends you there and you need help, arrange it before travel rather than expecting a staffed counter at the station.
Walk to the cathedral and use rail for the east bank
Walk from Köln Hbf to Cologne Cathedral. It is immediately beside the station, so local transport is unnecessary for that first stop. Check the hotel pin before choosing the final walking direction, especially when the address is beyond the cathedral square.
From Messe/Deutz, the Hohenzollern Bridge provides a walking route towards the cathedral side of the Rhine. Use the S-Bahn to Hbf when luggage, weather or a short connection makes the walk a poor choice. Confirm the local stopping pattern because service changes can affect the short hop too.
For an outer district, plan the last leg by the stop nearest the hotel. A generic city-centre label is less useful than the exact station, tram stop or address.
Check station facilities before relying on them
Köln Hbf has card-and-coin lockers. One listed locker size costs €3 for up to 2 hours or €6 for 24 hours. Check the current charge at the locker before paying. Availability is not guaranteed, so leave another plan for luggage if a major event makes the station busy.
The DB Reisezentrum sells tickets and reservations and provides timetable and fare advice. Use it for DB products. A ticket for another operator may need to be bought from that operator instead.
Book mobility assistance in advance if you need help boarding, changing or leaving a train. DB recommends at least 24 hours for a journey within Germany and 36 hours for an international journey. Confirm the meeting point and service details after any platform or train change.

Frequently asked questions
Are Cologne and Köln the same place on a train ticket?
Yes. Köln is the German name for Cologne. Pay attention to the word that follows the city name. Hbf, Messe/Deutz, Flughafen and Ehrenfeld identify different stops, so read the whole destination before paying.
Can I use a Deutschland-Ticket on ICE or FlixTrain services from Cologne?
No. The Deutschland-Ticket covers participating local transport and trains such as RB, RE and S-Bahn, but it is generally not valid on IC, EC, ICE or FlixTrain. Buy a separate ticket for the long-distance part of the journey.
Does a DB long-distance ticket include local transport in Cologne?
Only when the ticket or itinerary includes it. A Flexpreis ticket marked "+City" includes the City-Ticket at the start or destination, while other fares may need a separate local ticket. Check the ticket itself before using a tram, bus or unlisted S-Bahn leg.
Does Köln Hbf have a DB Lounge?
Yes. The lounge is on the upper level by platform 1, between the A and B passages. Access requires an eligible first-class Flexpreis ticket, BahnCard 100 First or qualifying BahnBonus status with a valid DB long-distance ticket. A first-class saver fare alone does not grant access.
Is Köln Messe/Deutz accessible without using stairs?
The station has lifts and a DB mobility service, but the route through this multi-level station depends on the platform. Check the live lift status and arrange assistance before travel if a broken lift would make the connection unusable.
