Weimar is the station for the old town, and the trains that call here are regional: Erfurt, Jena, Gera, Apolda, Naumburg and Eisenach are all direct, while Berlin, Frankfurt, Leipzig and Dresden need a change. No ICE stops in Weimar.
Arriving at Weimar station
Weimar station has five platforms. DB Information and the mobility service are staffed from 08:10 to 18:35 every day, including public holidays, and there is a DB Reisezentrum, a taxi rank, bicycle parking, a WC and luggage lockers.
Trains from Weimar
Everything below applies to the timetable valid until 12 December 2026.
DB Regio's RE 3 is the workhorse: it runs to Erfurt Hbf in as little as 13 minutes, and the other way to Jena West, Hermsdorf-Klosterlausnitz and Gera Hbf, with Gera 47 minutes away on the fastest through trains. In October 2026 most daytime RE 1, RE 3 and RB 21 trains towards Gera end at Hermsdorf-Klosterlausnitz, where a replacement bus takes you on to Gera bus station, and several RE 3 trains to Greiz are cancelled, so allow extra time for Gera. Abellio's RE 16 also serves Erfurt Hbf and, in the other direction, Apolda and Naumburg (Saale) Hbf, which takes 29 minutes, continuing to Weißenfels, Merseburg and Halle (Saale) Hbf. Abellio's RB 20 runs to Erfurt Hbf, Gotha and Eisenach Hbf, and to Apolda and Naumburg. DB Regio's RE 1 runs west through Erfurt and Gotha to Göttingen and east through Jena West to Gera and Glauchau, the RE 3 continues beyond Gera to Altenburg or Greiz, and Erfurter Bahn's RB 21 links Erfurt, Weimar, Jena and Gera, stopping at the smaller stations.
Long-distance trains do not stop in Weimar. The ICE connections to Berlin, Frankfurt and Dresden go via a change, and the quickest connection to Leipzig takes 1 hour. A summer Intercity linking Gera, Jena and Weimar with Kassel and Köln ran until 20 September 2026 and does not run again in the current timetable. There is no direct international train.
From the station to the old town
Buses 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8 run from the Hauptbahnhof stop outside the station to Goetheplatz, the central hub where every city bus line stops. The Theaterplatz and the Markt, the main square of the old town, are in the historic centre around it. Bus tickets are sold in the customer pavilion at Goetheplatz, at the Tourist Information at Markt 10 and at the kiosk at the main station. A single ticket in the city costs €3 and a city day ticket €7.60 (VMT fares from 1 August 2026). Children under 6 and Weimar Card holders ride free. Electronic displays at Goetheplatz show the next departures.
Weimar West
Weimar West is a small stop on Erfurter Bahn's RB 26 to Kranichfeld, two minutes after Weimar. It has no staff, only bicycle and car parking, so it matters mostly if you are staying on that side of town or taking the Kranichfeld line. For the old town, use Weimar.
Buchenwald Memorial
Bus 6 towards Buchenwald runs from Goetheplatz and from the main station several times a day and takes about 20 minutes. At weekends bus 4 towards Ettersburg also serves the memorial. The memorial is open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays, 10:00 to 18:00 from April to October and 10:00 to 16:00 from November to March; it is closed on Mondays. Since buses run only several times a day, plan the return before you set off.
Tickets and the Deutschlandticket
The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month and is valid on regional trains and local buses, so it covers the RE and RB services above and the city buses. It does not cover ICE, IC, EC or FlixTrain.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, regional trains from Weimar need no reservation with an Interrail pass. Seat reservations on the ICE and IC trains you join at Erfurt are optional and cost €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first. Because no ICE or IC calls at Weimar itself, any reservation applies to the second leg of the journey, not to the trip into Weimar.
