Garmisch-Partenkirchen has a single station, with regional trains from Munich, Innsbruck and Reutte and the Zugspitze cog railway a few steps away.

Arriving at Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The station is at Bahnhofstraße 31. The DB Reisezentrum is open Monday to Friday 08:30 to 17:30 and Saturday 08:30 to 13:30, and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Mobile service staff are at the station from 06:30 to 22:00 on weekdays and from 07:00 to 22:00 at weekends and on public holidays. There are lifts, luggage lockers, bike parking and a taxi rank.

The old centre around Marienplatz lies west of the station. Ortsbus lines 321, 322 and 324 run towards Marienplatz, but since 14 September 2026 roadworks have taken the Bahnhof stop out of service. The buses use a temporary stop in front of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Lagerhausstraße instead.

If you stay overnight, your host issues a Gästekarte. Register the digital version before you arrive and the Ortsbus is free from the day you reach your accommodation. The visitor tax is €3 per person and day, €1 for children aged 6 to 15, and nothing under 6.

Trains from Munich

The Werdenfelsbahn, run by DB Regio Bayern, links München Hbf with Garmisch-Partenkirchen about every hour. The RB 6 takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and calls at München-Pasing on the way. The faster RE 61, which runs at weekday peak times and at weekends, takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

RB 6 and RB 60 trains run joined from Munich and split at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, so check the displays on the platform and inside the train to see which half you are in.

On Saturdays and Sundays one ICE leaves Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 15:33 for München Hbf, Augsburg, Ulm, Stuttgart, Mannheim and Saarbrücken in the 2026 timetable. The Deutschlandticket is not valid on it.

Mittenwald, Innsbruck and Reutte

Trains to Innsbruck Hbf run about every two hours, as the S 6 or as RB 6 trains running through from Munich, via Mittenwald, Scharnitz and Seefeld in Tirol. The trip takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. The RE 61 runs from Munich through Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Mittenwald, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings one RE 62 continues to Lermoos. The RB 60 follows the Außerfernbahn to Reutte in Tirol and on to Pfronten-Steinach. DB Regio runs all of these.

The Zugspitze by cog railway

The cog railway to the Zugspitze runs as the RB 64 from the Zugspitzbahnhof beside the main station and takes 75 minutes to Zugspitzplatt. The last train through to the summit leaves Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 14:15, so start in the morning. It is run by the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, not by DB.

The summer 2026 Ticket Zugspitze costs €78 for adults, and a one-way ticket €46. Both include the Gletscherbahn cable car. With the Ticket Zugspitze you can go up by cog railway and down by the Zugspitze cable car to Eibsee, or the other way round. The one-way ticket covers either the ascent or the descent, by cog railway or by cable car. Summer rates run to 22 November 2026, and winter rates start on 27 November. If you arrive on a DB return ticket, show it at the ticket office and the adult ticket drops to €70. This discount does not apply with a Deutschlandticket.

The other stops on the cog railway

The valley section also serves Hausberg, Kreuzeck-/Alpspitzbahn, Hammersbach, Grainau and Eibsee. A one-way ticket from Garmisch-Partenkirchen costs €3 to Hausberg or the Kreuzeck-/Alpspitzbahn, €4.80 to Hammersbach or Grainau and €8 to Eibsee. Hausberg and the Kreuzeck-/Alpspitzbahn are the base stations for the Garmisch-Classic ski area.

Tickets and the Deutschlandticket

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month. It covers regional trains, S-Bahn, buses and trams, so it works on the Werdenfelsbahn from Munich and on the DB Regio trains across the border to Reutte in Tirol, for journeys to or from Germany but not for trips within Austria. It does not cover ICE, IC or EC trains. It is a subscription, and you can cancel by the 10th of the month.

For a day out from Munich, the Regio-Ticket Werdenfels costs €31 for the first person and €10 for each extra person, for up to five people in total. It is valid from 00:00 until 03:00 the next day in second class on regional trains between Munich and Mittenwald, on the Außerfernbahn through Reutte in Tirol and across the Munich S-Bahn network.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, regional trains (RE, RB) and S-Bahn trains in Germany need no reservation with an Interrail Pass, so none of the Werdenfelsbahn services needs a seat reservation. Reservations for ICE and IC trains in Germany are optional and cost €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first. That applies to the weekend ICE from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and to long-distance trains onward from Munich. FlixTrain is not included in the pass.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Zugspitze cog railway leave from?

From the Zugspitzbahnhof, a few steps from the main station. The trains appear as the RB 64 on the DB departure board. Allow 75 minutes to Zugspitzplatt and catch the 14:15 at the latest.

Can I use the Deutschlandticket on the Zugspitze railway?

Only on the valley section. With a Deutschlandticket the cog railway is free between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau, and a ticket to Eibsee costs €6.50 instead of €8. The Zugspitze summit ticket is a separate purchase.

Is there a direct train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Innsbruck?

Yes. A direct train runs about every two hours, as the S 6 or a through RB 6, via Mittenwald, Scharnitz and Seefeld in Tirol, and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. It is a regional train, so no seat reservation is needed.

Is the Ortsbus free for visitors?

It is free with the digital Gästekarte from your accommodation, if you register before you arrive. Without one you buy a normal Ortsbus ticket. The Deutschlandticket is also valid on the Ortsbus.

When is the Zugspitze closed this autumn?

The Zugspitze is closed on 9 to 13, 16 to 20 and 23 to 26 November 2026. The cog railway valley section between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau is also shut on 9 to 13 and 16 to 20 November, with a replacement bus. Winter rates start on 27 November.
