Lumo is an open-access operator running all-electric trains on Britain's East Coast Main Line. It launched in 2021 as a fully digital, ticket-only operator, selling directly through its own website and app.
Where Lumo runs
The original route connects London with Edinburgh, calling at Stevenage, Newcastle upon Tyne and Morpeth, with some services extending to Glasgow. A newer route runs from London Euston to Stirling, calling at Milton Keynes, Nuneaton, Crewe, Preston, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Whifflet, Greenfaulds and Larbert. Lumo runs Hitachi Class 803 electric trains across both routes.
Tickets and reservations
Lumo tickets are Advance, Anytime, Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak fares, bought directly through lumo.co.uk or the app with no booking fee. You can book up to 24 weeks ahead of travel, or up to 26 weeks for some fares. Dates affected by engineering work usually only open around 8 weeks before travel.
Advance fares come with a free automatic seat reservation, matched to passenger preferences where possible. Anytime, Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak fares can request a reservation, but Lumo cannot always guarantee one, particularly on short journeys or once a train is full. Without a reservation, a valid ticket still lets you sit in any unreserved seat in the right class.
Lumo tickets are valid only for travel on Lumo trains. They cannot be used on other operators' services, except when unexpected disruption changes ticket acceptance.
Onboard and luggage
Seats include power sockets, extendable tray tables, reading lights, coat hangers and Wi-Fi. LumoEats, an onboard trolley service plus a pre-order option, sells snacks, drinks and hot food.
Each passenger can bring one medium suitcase, up to 63 x 41 x 27cm, and one small bag that fits on the lap or under the seat. Larger or additional items are carried at Lumo's discretion and may be refused or charged for.
