East Midlands Railway runs fast trains between London St Pancras and the East Midlands, alongside a wide regional network across Central and Northern England. Transport UK Group operates it, trading as Transport UK East Midlands Limited.
Intercity services to London
Four Intercity trains an hour run between London St Pancras and East Midlands destinations including Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield and East Midlands Parkway. The fastest journey to Sheffield takes 2 hours 1 minute. Every Intercity train carries a First Class carriage, so upgrading is possible on any departure rather than only on selected services.
A separate service, EMR Connect, links Corby with St Pancras every 30 minutes, calling at Kettering, Wellingborough, Bedford, Luton and Luton Airport Parkway along the way. Class 360 electric trains run EMR Connect services, having replaced the diesel trains previously used on the route.
Regional network
Beyond the London corridor, EMR operates a set of cross-country regional lines: Liverpool to Norwich via Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham and Peterborough; Matlock to Derby and Nottingham; Nottingham to Worksop via Mansfield; Newark Castle to Crewe via Nottingham, Derby and Stoke-on-Trent; Peterborough to Doncaster via Lincoln; Nottingham to Skegness via Grantham; and services linking Cleethorpes with Leicester and with Barton-on-Humber. If your journey does not touch London, check whether one of these regional lines gets you there directly rather than assuming you need to route via a main hub.
Connecting onward
EMR trains reach three UK airports: Luton Airport, via Luton Airport Parkway and a short connection on the Luton DART; East Midlands Airport, via East Midlands Parkway, Derby, Nottingham or Long Eaton; and Liverpool John Lennon Airport, via Liverpool South Parkway. EMR also has a Eurostar partnership covering eight EMR stations, letting you buy one fare through to European destinations via London St Pancras. Early departures from Leicester, Wellingborough and Kettering are timed to connect with the first Eurostar of the day.
Tickets
EMR sells the standard set of UK fares, including Advance, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak and Anytime tickets, along with season tickets and group fares such as GroupSave and Family Saver. Railcards apply across these ticket types. EMR applies a penalty fare to passengers who travel without a valid ticket when one was available to buy before boarding.
