Train stations in Manchester

Frequently asked questions

How many train stations does Manchester have?

Manchester has four train stations in the city centre: Piccadilly (MAN), Victoria (MCV), Oxford Road (MCO) and Deansgate (DGT). Manchester Airport station (MIA) is a fifth, out by the terminals, and is a separate ticket.

Which is the main train station in Manchester?

Manchester Piccadilly is the main station and the one to assume by default for long-distance trains. Network Rail manages it, and it is described on the Network Rail page as Manchester's principal station. Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales all run services from there.

What is the difference between MANCHESTER STNS and MANCHESTER CTLZ?

MANCHESTER STNS is the standard ticket grouping that covers Piccadilly, Victoria, Oxford Road and Deansgate. MANCHESTER CTLZ is the same grouping, but issued to passengers starting from one of the 91 Greater Manchester National Rail stations, and it adds free Metrolink travel within Zone 1 on the day of travel. Visitors from outside Greater Manchester travel on MANCHESTER STNS and do not get the tram included.

Is Manchester Airport in the Manchester station group?

No. Manchester Airport rail station is not part of the Manchester station group, so a ticket to MANCHESTER STNS does not cover the airport. You need a separate ticket to or from Manchester Airport.

Which Manchester station should I use for Leeds, Bradford or the Calder Valley?

Victoria. Northern's route to Leeds via Bradford Interchange runs from Manchester Victoria, as does the Calder Valley line through Blackburn via Burnley Manchester Road and on to Clitheroe.

How do I get between Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria stations?

Take the Metrolink tram on a Bury route from the Piccadilly tram stop, which takes around 10 minutes. The free city-centre bus route 2 also runs Piccadilly to Victoria on a one-way loop, and is faster than the return trip. On foot, the walk takes about 15 to 20 minutes through the Arndale.
