London to Venice by train

London to Venice by train takes roughly two days and at least two changes. There are no direct trains from London to Venice, and no nonstop sleeper from Paris. Most travellers pick between two practical options: the daytime route with an overnight stop in Turin or Milan, or the ÖBB Nightjet sleeper from Stuttgart, which gets you into Venice Santa Lucia by 08:34 the following morning.

From September 2026, a third option opens up via Brussels.

The route always starts with the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris. What happens after Paris depends on which route you take.

• Daytime with overnight stop: Eurostar to Paris, Frecciarossa or TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon to Turin or Milan, overnight, then a morning train to Venice.

• Nightjet overnight: Eurostar to Paris, 7-minute walk to Gare de l’Est, TGV to Stuttgart, ÖBB Nightjet to Venice.

• European Sleeper (Mon, Thu, Sat from 9 September 2026): Eurostar to Brussels, European Sleeper overnight to Milan, day train to Venice.

Reservations are compulsory on every leg. You cannot board without them, including with an Interrail Pass.

Which Venice station to use

Two stations serve Venice, and the difference matters.

Book Venezia Santa Lucia for the city. It sits on the island at the edge of the Grand Canal. The vaporetto (water bus) stop is a two-minute walk from the platforms, and most long-distance trains terminate here. This is the station almost all visitors want.

Choose Venezia Mestre only if your hotel is on the mainland or you are connecting to another train. Mestre is the mainland station. From there, you still need a train, bus, or taxi across the causeway to reach the historic centre.

If a booking page shows only “Venice” without specifying the station, open the train details and confirm before you pay. Booking Mestre by accident is a common and expensive mistake.

Train companies on this route

At least three operators are involved, and their roles are distinct.

Eurostar covers London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. Journey time is about 2 hours 15 minutes. Check-in at St Pancras is separate from the main concourse. Allow at least 30 minutes, more if you have luggage or are travelling in peak season. The Eurostar terminal is at the upper level of the station.

On the daytime route, you then switch to either the Frecciarossa (Trenitalia) or the TGV InOui (SNCF) at Paris Gare de Lyon. Both run to Turin Porta Susa and Milan Centrale through the Alps. The Frecciarossa is a newer train with an Executive class option; the TGV InOui is broadly comparable in standard and business class. Journey time from Paris to Turin is approximately 5 hours 30 minutes.

From Turin or Milan, Trenitalia and Italo both run high-speed trains to Venice Santa Lucia. Milan Centrale to Venice takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Turin to Venice takes around 3 hours 30 minutes. Both operators run several departures per hour on this corridor.

On the overnight Nightjet route, the connector is the SNCF TGV from Paris Gare de l’Est to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (about 3 hours), then the ÖBB Nightjet from Stuttgart to Venice (departs ~20:29, arrives Venice Santa Lucia ~08:34).

The Paris station transfer

This is where most first-time London-to-Venice travellers go wrong.

Daytime route (Frecciarossa or TGV to Italy): your Eurostar arrives at Paris Gare du Nord. The Italy trains depart from Paris Gare de Lyon, about 4 km away in a different part of the city. Allow at least 60 minutes for this transfer, and 90 minutes if you have heavy luggage. Take the RER D or metro Line 14 between the stations. The metro journey itself takes about 10-15 minutes, but navigating platforms and buying a ticket adds time.

Nightjet route (Stuttgart and ÖBB): your Eurostar arrives at Paris Gare du Nord. The Stuttgart TGV departs from Paris Gare de l’Est, which is 500 metres away. Walk it. It takes about 7 minutes. This is far simpler than the daytime transfer.

Gare de Lyon and Gare de l’Est are in different directions from Gare du Nord. Confirm which transfer you need before you travel. Going to the wrong station means missing your connection with very little time to recover.

Day train route

The daytime route is the most popular and the most flexible, but it does require an overnight stop.

Step 1: Take a morning Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord. First Eurostar departures start around 05:30, with frequent trains through the morning. Transfer across Paris from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon.

Step 2: From Paris Gare de Lyon, take the Frecciarossa or TGV InOui towards Turin or Milan. Both run several times daily. Book as early as possible. Advance fares on the Paris-Turin leg start from around €29, but prices rise quickly as the train fills.

Step 3: Stay overnight in Turin or Milan. Turin Porta Susa and Milano Centrale are both well-positioned city-centre stations with hotels close by. Turin is a good choice if you want a quieter stop; Milan if you want more to do or an earlier onward connection.

Step 4: Take an early Frecciarossa or Italo to Venice Santa Lucia the next morning. Milan to Venice takes about 2 hours 30 minutes; Turin to Venice around 3 hours 30 minutes. Advance fares on this leg start from around €10-€25.

A same-day London to Venice journey is possible on weekdays with an early Eurostar and a specific fast connection through Paris and Turin. It works, but a single missed connection turns it into an overnight stay regardless. If your schedule has no flexibility, plan the overnight stop deliberately rather than hoping the connections hold.

ÖBB Nightjet overnight route

The Nightjet trades travel time for a night in a bed. You leave London in the morning, sleep through the Alps, and wake up in Venice.

Step 1: Take a morning Eurostar to Paris. Departures at 09:31 or 10:31 give enough time to make the connection. In Paris, walk from Gare du Nord to Gare de l’Est. It is about 500 metres, 7 minutes on foot.

Step 2: Take the SNCF TGV from Paris Gare de l’Est to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof. The standard departures are at 13:52 or 15:55 (check your specific date). Journey time is approximately 3 hours.

Step 3: Board the ÖBB Nightjet at Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, departing at approximately 20:29. It arrives at Venice Santa Lucia at approximately 08:34 the following morning, rolling across the lagoon causeway with the Grand Canal visible ahead.

Important for 20 July to 11 September 2026: The 15:55 Paris-Munich TGV does not call at Stuttgart during this period. Use the 13:52 TGV to Stuttgart instead. Or take the 15:55 to Ulm (arrives ~20:21) and join the Nightjet from Ulm (departs ~21:53).

The Nightjet runs three accommodation types:

• Seats: Open carriage, the cheapest option. Fine for lighter sleepers on a budget.

• Couchettes: Shared compartment of 4 or 6 berths. More private than a seat. Breakfast is included.

• Sleepers: Private or semi-private cabin with washbasin. Breakfast included. The Comfortline cars have upgraded cabins with shower and toilet.

With ÖBB Sparschiene advance tickets, seat prices start from around €29, couchettes from around €39, and sleepers from around €79. Prices depend on availability and how early you book. Sleeper and couchette places sell out before seats on popular dates. Book at least 3 months ahead if you want a proper bed; 6 months ahead is better.

Do not board the Nightjet with only your Interrail or Eurail Pass. A separate reservation for your accommodation type is required. Book the reservation at nightjet.com.

European Sleeper option (from 9 September 2026)

From 9 September 2026, the European Sleeper runs Brussels to Milan overnight on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. It stops at Cologne, Basel, Zürich, Lugano, and Como before arriving in Milan.

This creates a London-to-Venice option with one change in Brussels rather than two changes in Paris:

Step 1: Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels-Midi, approximately 2 hours. Same-day connections are available.

Step 2: European Sleeper overnight Brussels to Milan. Shared Classic compartment tickets start from €49.99 per person; private compartments from €179.99.

Step 3: Day train from Milan to Venice Santa Lucia the next morning.

The service does not run every day, and it does not go to Venice directly. But if you want to avoid the Paris station transfer or if the Cologne-Zürich-Milan route is more convenient, this is worth considering. Check europeansleeper.eu for current schedules and availability.

Ticket prices

Prices vary by date, demand, how far in advance you book, and whether you choose flexible or advance fares. The table below shows approximate advance prices in the operator’s native currency. Actual fares can be significantly higher closer to travel.

Eurostar fares are in GBP; all continental fares are in EUR. Book each leg separately. There is no combined through-ticket for London to Venice.

How to book

There is no single booking site that covers the whole journey. Each leg needs its own ticket.

Eurostar (London to Paris): Book at eurostar.com. Opens 6 months ahead. This is also where Interrail and Eurail pass holders must book their Eurostar reservation. It cannot be done at a station window.

Frecciarossa (Paris to Turin/Milan): Book at trenitalia.com. Usually opens 90-120 days ahead.

TGV InOui (Paris to Turin/Milan): Book at sncf-connect.com. Opens 3 months ahead.

ÖBB Nightjet (Stuttgart to Venice): Book at nightjet.com or oebb.at. Opens 6 months ahead. Book early for couchettes and sleepers.

European Sleeper (Brussels to Milan): Book at europeansleeper.eu. Opens 180 days ahead.

Trenitalia or Italo (Italy legs): Book at trenitalia.com or italotreno.it. Advance fares open 90-120 days ahead.

Resellers like Rail Europe, Omio, and Trainline can handle some of these legs and are useful for comparing options. They may charge a booking fee per ticket. Booking directly with the operator avoids this and sometimes gives you access to cheaper advance fares not shown on resellers.

Interrail and Eurail passes

An Interrail or Eurail Global Pass covers all the rail operators on this route, but it does not replace the reservation requirement. Every leg on this journey requires a separate reservation.

Eurostar: Must be booked at eurostar.com. You cannot buy a Eurostar Interrail reservation at a station ticket window or through most booking agents. The number of Interrail places on each Eurostar departure is limited. Book this first, before the rest of the journey.

Frecciarossa and TGV InOui: Reservations are compulsory. Book through the operator website or at an international rail ticket counter. Reservation fees vary by train and class.

ÖBB Nightjet: A reservation for your chosen accommodation type (seat, couchette, or sleeper) is required. Book at nightjet.com. Reservation fees depend on accommodation type. Book early if you want a couchette or sleeper, as they go before seats.

Italo and Trenitalia: Reservations required on all Italian high-speed services.

Activate your Interrail Pass before your first journey. It can be done in the app.

Extra costs and rules

Booking fees

Direct booking with each operator avoids third-party booking fees. Rail Europe, Omio, and Trainline may add a fee per ticket. Digital tickets avoid collection or print fees at the station.

Cancellation

Rules differ by operator and fare type. Eurostar Standard advance fares are non-refundable. Flexible Eurostar fares allow changes. ÖBB Nightjet Sparschiene tickets are non-refundable; the Sparschiene Komfort version allows cancellation for a fee up to 15 days before travel. Check cancellation conditions at the time of booking, as they vary and can change.

Luggage

On Eurostar, you can take 2 large bags (maximum 85 cm on the longest dimension) plus one small item. All bags must have a name label. Eurostar also offers a registered baggage service between London and Paris. Check current fees at eurostar.com.

TGV and Frecciarossa have no checked baggage service. Bags go in the overhead racks or the end-of-carriage areas. There are no strict size limits, but high-speed carriages are not designed for oversized luggage. Keep bags manageable, especially on a journey with multiple connections.

Items not permitted on Eurostar

Firearms, explosives, gas canisters, knives with blades longer than 3 inches, e-scooters, and hoverboards are prohibited. Check the current list at eurostar.com before you travel.

Travel documents

A valid passport is required for all travel from the UK into France and Italy. Check current entry requirements for Italy and any transit countries before you book, as rules can change.

EU and EEA citizens may travel with a national identity card. Non-EU, non-EEA travellers should check whether a visa is required for France, Switzerland, or Italy before booking.

Accessibility

Eurostar provides boarding assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. Book in advance through Eurostar’s accessibility line. High-speed trains in France and Italy generally have wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets, though facilities vary by train. Contact each operator individually to confirm and reserve accessible spaces. Do not assume availability without a confirmed booking.
