Works and festive changes
- Saturday 31 October to Sunday 1 November and Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 November 2026: buses replace trains between Perth and Inverness, which affects ScotRail and LNER trains to Inverness.
- Sunday 1 November: the Sleeper from Inverness runs via Aberdeen and Dundee and does not call at Stirling. The northbound Sleeper that leaves London on Friday 6 November also skips Stirling. On Sunday 15 November the Sleeper from Inverness leaves at 20:54 and reaches Stirling at 00:20.
- Lumo has West Coast engineering works on Sunday 8 November and from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 December 2026, so times change or services are reduced on those days.
- No trains call at Stirling on Christmas Day or New Year's Day. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve the last trains from Stirling leave at 21:53 for Glasgow Queen Street and 21:36 for Edinburgh, and on 2 January trains start later than usual, from about 09:00. The Sleeper does not run on 24 or 25 December, or on 31 December and 1 January. No LNER trains run on 25 and 26 December. On Thursday 24 December the Highland Chieftain runs only between York and Perth, so from London change at York. On Thursday 31 December it runs from King's Cross but ends at Perth, with a coach on to Inverness. On Friday 1 January 2027 no LNER trains run north of Edinburgh. ScotRail had not published its Boxing Day times by mid-October 2026.
Tickets
ScotRail has no peak fares, and its fares are frozen until March 2027. Advance singles start at £21.70 to Inverness and £15.30 to Aberdeen. A railcard takes at least a third off. You get the best ScotRail fare by buying before you board, and you must hold a valid ticket before travelling.
On LNER, booking four weeks ahead can save up to 45% on buying on the day, and Fridays count as Off-Peak. Lumo fares tend not to change with the time of day. Lumo, LNER and the Sleeper sell through their own sites.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, Interrail covers ScotRail, LNER, Lumo and the Caledonian Sleeper. ScotRail, LNER and Lumo trains need no reservation. Things that catch travellers out
