Bath Spa is the station for the city centre, and Great Western Railway runs every train that stops there. The Roman Baths and Bath Abbey are less than ten minutes' walk away.
Arriving at Bath Spa
The station is on Dorchester Street. The Roman Baths entrance is in Abbey Church Yard, next to the Abbey, so you walk straight into the historic centre. A taxi rank sits at the station entrance, and Bath Bus Station is a minute's walk along Dorchester Street. First West of England runs the city buses from there. Lifts give step-free access to every platform.
The ticket office is open 06:00 to 20:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:45 to 20:00 on Sunday, and there are ticket machines and ticket gates. Seat reservations are sold at the office only 08:00 to 19:00 Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 18:00 on Saturday and 09:30 to 18:00 on Sunday. There is no left-luggage service, so leave heavy bags at your accommodation. Bike in Bath hires bikes at the front of the station.
Trains to and from Bath Spa
These are the trains in the GWR timetable that runs from 17 May to 12 December 2026. A new timetable starts on 13 December.
- London Paddington: about every 30 minutes, around 1 hour 20 minutes, calling at Reading, Didcot Parkway, Swindon and Chippenham.
- Bristol Temple Meads: about four trains an hour, from 11 minutes on the non-stop trains. Stopping trains call at Keynsham and Oldfield Park, so stay on until Bath Spa for the centre.
- Cardiff Central: about one through train an hour, every day, in around 1 hour 10 minutes.
- Salisbury, Southampton Central and Portsmouth Harbour: the same hourly train carries on south, reaching Salisbury in about 1 hour, Southampton Central in about 1 hour 25 minutes and Portsmouth Harbour in about 2 hours 15 minutes, with no change.
- Westbury: about two trains an hour, including the Salisbury trains; some continue to Frome and Weymouth.
Engineering works
London Paddington is closed to GWR trains on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026, and again from Sunday 27 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. On those dates GWR runs trains between London Euston and Bristol Temple Meads that call at Bath Spa, hourly on the November weekend. They take a longer route via Milton Keynes and cannot pick up or set down passengers between Euston and Swindon, so book to or from London Euston. Trains between Reading and Bath Spa also keep running. On single Sundays in November and early December, buses replace some trains south of Bath: Westbury to Salisbury on 29 November, at Southampton Central on 1 November and 6 December (the Portsmouth trains run via Eastleigh and miss it), and Westbury to Frome on 8 November until 17:25. When buses replace trains, they leave Bath Spa from Dorchester Street, bus stop BH at Brunel Place, or wherever the signs direct.
Tickets
GWR sells three main fare types for trips from Bath Spa:
- Advance: usually the cheapest, valid only on the date and train named on the ticket. It is non-refundable, and changing it can cost a £10 admin fee plus any fare difference. On GWR, buy it by 18:00 the day before travel.
- Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak: valid on any permitted train outside peak times. In cities and large towns Off-Peak usually starts at 09:30 on weekdays and covers weekends all day. The exact times differ by route, and evening restrictions can apply.
- Anytime: no time restrictions and bookable on the day.
A railcard takes one third off Standard class Advance and Off-Peak fares, though a minimum fare may apply at some times. GWR charges no booking fee when you buy from GWR.
Buy before you board. Bath Spa has ticket gates, a ticket office and machines, so you need a valid ticket for your train. A penalty fare on GWR is £100 plus the full fare, or £50 plus the full fare if you pay within 21 days.
Buses in Bath take contactless payment and cash, and contactless is preferred. The First Bus app also sells tickets.
Stonehenge
Salisbury is the nearest station to Stonehenge. The Stonehenge Tour bus, run by Salisbury Reds, leaves the station forecourt hourly; in the winter timetable the first departure from the station is 10:05 and the last 14:05. Its ticket includes Stonehenge admission. By taxi, Stonehenge is 12 miles from the station. The train from Bath Spa to Salisbury takes about an hour.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, Interrail passes are valid on Great Western Railway, which runs every train at Bath Spa. GWR trains need no reservation with a pass, but a seat reservation is recommended on busy trains. You book it with GWR, not through Interrail.
