Use Porto Campanhã for long-distance trains and Porto São Bento for the historic centre; confirm the full station name before paying.
Campanhã and São Bento serve different journeys
Porto Campanhã is the usual choice for Alfa Pendular, Intercidades and the Celta to Vigo. It is Porto's main long-distance station, with trains towards Lisbon, Coimbra and the Algarve. Search results sometimes show only "Porto", so open the train details before you pay.
São Bento makes more sense if you are staying in the historic centre and your urban or regional train starts there. Trains towards the Douro Valley, Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro can serve both São Bento and Campanhã, but the pattern varies. Check the station and train category shown for your departure.
A long-distance train booked from Campanhã cannot be boarded at São Bento. The two stations are linked, but they are not interchangeable. Follow the full station name on the ticket.
The urban train is the simplest link between the stations
The CP urban train normally covers Campanhã to São Bento in four or five minutes. It is handy when a long-distance train leaves you at Campanhã and your accommodation is near the old city. Your main ticket may already include this short connection.
If your CP ticket starts or ends at Porto Campanhã, you can use the urban train between Campanhã and São Bento without another fare. The connection is valid during the hour before the main train leaves or for up to one hour after it arrives. Keep the original ticket ready for inspection and stay within that window.
This benefit applies to CP's urban train, not the Metro. The Metro or a taxi may still suit your final address or arrival time better, but you will need the right local ticket. Check the accommodation entrance rather than assuming São Bento is closest to every central address.
Lisbon trains trade speed against price and flexibility
Alfa Pendular is the faster option between Porto Campanhã and Lisbon. The quickest scheduled journeys reach Lisboa Oriente in about 2 hours 43 minutes, while an Intercidades journey can take just over 3 hours. Many services continue to Lisboa Santa Apolónia, so check the Lisbon station as well as the journey time.
Compare Alfa Pendular and Intercidades for the same date. CP Promo fares on Intercidades between Lisbon and Porto can start at €10.50, but you must buy at least five days ahead and the discounted allocation is limited. Promo tickets can be exchanged but not refunded. A standard fare is often the safer choice if your plans might change.
Seat reservations are compulsory on both Alfa Pendular and Intercidades. A normal full ticket includes a seat on the selected train, and an online ticket is valid only for that service and date. Read the exchange conditions before you build a tight flight or separate-ticket connection around it.
Two Alfa Pendular trains a day run through from Porto Campanhã to Faro, with a journey of about 5 hours 43 minutes. Other Algarve trips require a change in Lisbon. Read the complete itinerary before choosing, especially if a separate onward booking is involved.
Vigo journeys currently include replacement transport
Two Celta departures run daily between Porto Campanhã and Vigo-Guixar. They do not use Vigo-Urzáiz, and a seat reservation is compulsory. Confirm the Spanish station before arranging onward travel because Vigo's two main stations are not interchangeable.
Engineering works make this more complicated than a normal through train. Until 7 April 2027, Celta trains 420, 421, 422 and 423 use a replacement bus between Valença do Minho and Vigo-Guixar, with no intermediate stops. CP also has a temporary operating arrangement that requires a train change at Viana do Castelo. Read the itinerary before paying and plan for both transfers unless your booking shows otherwise.
The replacement bus cannot carry wheelchairs. Bicycles and scooters are accepted only when packed within 140 × 90 × 40 cm, and pets are not allowed. If any of those restrictions affect you, choose another itinerary or confirm an alternative with CP before paying.
The published timetable allows roughly 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes from Porto to Vigo after accounting for the one-hour time difference. Road traffic can change the arrival time, so do not use that range as the basis for a tight connection. CP and Renfe operate the service together. Tickets are sold at CP ticket offices and on the Renfe website, so check how changes are handled by the seller before paying.
São Bento is the useful start for regional day trips
São Bento is a convenient starting point for the Douro Valley when you are already in the historic centre. The relevant Regional and InterRegional trains call at Campanhã a few minutes later, which means either station can work. Read the destination on the train because other urban services turn towards Braga, Guimarães or Aveiro.
As a guide, direct journeys from São Bento take about 1 hour 55 minutes to Régua, 2 hours 22 minutes to Pinhão and 3 hours 20 minutes to Pocinho. Check your return before committing to Pocinho. The long ride east may leave little time there if the useful return does not fit your day.
Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro all have direct CP urban trains from Porto. Many start at São Bento and call at Campanhã, while faster mainline trains also run from Campanhã to Aveiro. Compare the station, train category and return time instead of assuming every result works from both Porto stations.
Regional and InterRegional trains normally run without seat reservations, but you still need a valid ticket. Buy the correct product before travel and follow any validation rule that applies to it.
Full tickets and pass reservations are separate
A normal Alfa Pendular or Intercidades ticket includes a reserved seat for the selected train. An Interrail or Eurail Pass can cover eligible CP travel, but pass holders must buy a separate reservation before boarding either service. The pass-holder reservation costs €5.
Celta also requires a reservation. It is free for pass holders, though you still need to obtain one and places depend on available seats. Find out where it can be issued before travel, especially if Porto is your first stop in Portugal.
Promo fares suit travellers who can commit early. Weigh the saving against the exchange and refund rules, and choose a standard ticket when flexibility matters more. Before payment, check the passenger name, train number, class and departure station.
Local transport has different rules. Validate an Andante ticket when you begin the journey and again whenever you change line or transport mode. A service without seat reservations can still require ticket validation.
Airport travel needs Line E and the right zone
Metro Line E runs between Porto Airport and Estádio do Dragão through Trindade and Campanhã. From Campanhã, take a Line E train marked Aeroporto for a direct ride. From São Bento, take Line D to Trindade and change there. The airport to Trindade section takes about 30 minutes. Check the destination because the other Metro lines through Campanhã do not serve the airport.
The airport trip needs a Z4 Andante ticket, which costs €2.30. A Blue Andante card costs another €0.60, and each traveller needs their own card. Validate when you start and again after a line or transport change. A smaller zone or a missed validation can leave you travelling without a valid ticket.
If you expect to make several local trips, compare separate tickets with Andante Tour 1 at €7.75 for 24 consecutive hours or Tour 3 at €16.55 for 72 consecutive hours. Both cover the full intermodal Andante network after the first validation. Neither covers the Funicular dos Guindais or STCP heritage trams, so account for those exclusions before buying.
Luggage and accessibility need a realistic margin
Give yourself time to read the departure board and find the right train at Campanhã. Old platform information is particularly risky for the Celta while the journey involves replacement transport. Use the live departure information at the station.
The four or five minutes on the train between Campanhã and São Bento do not include waiting, moving between platforms or getting from the station to your accommodation. Heavy luggage slows every part of that transfer. A tight connection can still fail even when the ride itself is short.
CP's SIM service offers personalised support for passengers with specific needs, including help with journey planning, boarding and leaving the train. Ask for assistance for your actual journey and confirm that the stations and train can provide what you need. Arrange this before committing to a close connection.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a bicycle on Porto's urban trains?
Yes. CP allows one bicycle per passenger free of charge on Porto urban trains, every day and without time restrictions. Use the marked carriage area, keep doors clear and be prepared for staff to refuse the bicycle when space or safety makes carriage unsuitable.
What child discounts apply on CP trains from Porto?
Children aged three or younger travel free with an adult if they share a seat. Children aged 4 to 12 receive a 50% discount on the standard fare and their own seat; the Celta child discount is 40%. Carry official proof of age.
How long can I reuse a Blue Andante card?
The card can be recharged for one year. After that, you cannot add tickets, but any remaining tickets can still be used during the following 12 months.
How long is a Z4 Andante ticket valid after validation?
A Z4 ticket is valid for 1 hour 15 minutes from the first validation. Connections within the permitted zones are covered until that time expires. Touch the card to a validator at each line or mode change.
Are Porto urban trains suitable for wheelchairs and baby strollers?
Porto urban trains provide wheelchair access and spacious vestibules that make baby strollers easier to carry. Not every station has the same accessibility facilities, so confirm the stations and arrange SIM assistance in advance if you need help boarding or leaving the train.
