Choose Faro station for a Faro stay

For most trips ending in Faro city, book Faro station. Estação Ferroviária de Faro is at Largo da Estação. Choose another Algarve station only when your accommodation or onward transfer is elsewhere.

Before you pay, open the journey details and confirm that Faro is the destination station. A nearby Algarve stop can mean an avoidable transfer at the end of your journey.

Book Faro, then read the whole itinerary

Choose Faro when it is where you want the rail part of your trip to end. Open the journey details. A simple-looking result can still include a connection, a particular train category or an arrival detail that does not suit your plans.

CP, short for Comboios de Portugal, is the official channel for Portuguese train timetables and ticket options. Go beyond the first departure time or lowest fare. Check every leg, connection time and ticket condition, especially when another train, a flight or hotel check-in makes the arrival time matter.

Faro can also be a useful stop on a journey through the Algarve. Choose the itinerary that leaves enough time to reach your accommodation, rather than simply the train that reaches Faro first.

Treat an airport arrival as a separate transfer

If you fly into Faro, plan the airport-to-rail transfer separately before buying a same-day train ticket. A flight delay, checked luggage or a late arrival can turn an apparently generous connection into a stressful one. A cheap non-flexible ticket is not always the right choice when your flight feeds into it. If the rail leg matters, compare the ticket conditions as closely as the departure time.

Book the direct Lisbon to Faro service

From Lisbon, CP runs direct trains the whole way to Faro, with the Alfa Pendular the fastest at around 3 hours and the Intercidades around 3 hours 30 minutes. No change is needed on that leg. Most of these trains use Lisboa Entrecampos and Lisboa Oriente. Departure times shift across the year, so open a current CP result for your travel date and confirm the category of the train you are booking.

Regional trains can be a straightforward choice for a short Algarve journey when the timing works. They are ordinary scheduled services, not a protected connection to a flight, hotel transfer or another operator. Check the last useful departure as well as the first one.

Old timetables in blogs, forum posts and screenshots may not reflect current services. Service patterns can change by day and season. Use a current result, open the train details and make sure the itinerary reaches the town you need rather than only a nearby interchange.

Match the ticket and reservation to the train

CP ticket and reservation rules depend on the service shown in the itinerary. Alfa Pendular and Intercidades are reserved long-distance services, while Regional and InterRegional trains generally use a different, unreserved model. Read the category in the journey details rather than assuming every Portuguese train works the same way.

For rail-pass travel, the train category determines the reservation requirement. An Interrail or Eurail pass does not replace a required reservation on Alfa Pendular or Intercidades. Check the exact train and complete the reservation before travelling when your chosen service requires one. A Regional journey may be simpler, but confirm the exact service rather than guessing its category.

For a short Algarve outing, separate tickets can be clearer if you plan only one or two journeys. If you are considering a regional tourist product or a pass, first list the trains you genuinely expect to use. A pass offers value only when its coverage and validity match the categories and dates in your plan.

Make the final connection realistic

Inspect the journey in its real parts before booking: the CP train, any reservation rule and the transfer at either end. If one of those remains uncertain, choose an itinerary with more margin instead of hoping a tight connection will work.
