Use Zagreb Glavni kolodvor for long-distance trains, then check the route, reservation and final connection before paying.
Zagreb Glavni kolodvor is the main station
For the international and long-distance routes in this guide, Zagreb Glavni kolodvor is the station to book. Current trains to Ljubljana, Vienna, Budapest, Munich, Stuttgart, Zurich and Split all use Zagreb GK. Zagreb Zapadni kolodvor is mainly useful for city, suburban and regional travel west of the centre. The full station name matters. A generic Zagreb result is not precise enough.
Zagreb Glavni kolodvor is at Trg kralja Tomislava 12, about a 10-minute walk from the centre. Trams stop outside, although roadworks regularly change the lines serving the station. A 30-minute ZET stored-value fare costs €0.53. Select that fare on the validator before touching in, and check the live route rather than relying on an old tram number.
The station has ticket counters, domestic ticket machines, luggage lockers and a staffed information point. Travellers who need help boarding or leaving a train should contact HŽPP at least 24 hours before travel. Zagreb Glavni kolodvor has a mobile lifting platform. Get the assistance arrangement confirmed before accepting a tight connection.
Ljubljana is the shortest international example
Of the main international examples, Ljubljana is the quickest. Several direct trains run each day, with useful journeys taking roughly 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. The mix includes EuroCity, EuroNight and other cross-border trains, so the onboard product differs between departures.
The second-class Ljubljana Spezial one-way fare is €9 with HŽPP. It is a specific international offer, not a promise that every booking channel will show the same amount. Check the railway's own offer and conditions before paying more elsewhere, then make sure the ticket covers Ljubljana to Zagreb Glavni kolodvor on your chosen train.
Vienna and Budapest need different checks
Vienna has one published daily EuroCity in each direction. Zagreb to Vienna takes just under seven hours, and the First Minute Europe one-way fare is €45.60 when bought from HŽPP at least three days ahead. That offer comes with its own sales conditions. Check the live train and ticket terms before building the day around the sole direct departure.
Budapest works differently. Direct InterCity journeys take about six to six and a half hours, depending on direction and the Budapest station used. Limited Sparschiene fares start at €19 or €25, and the reservation is optional on the Budapest InterCity. A compulsory rule from the Split route does not carry over to this train.
Pay attention to the Budapest terminal. Seasonal operation or engineering work can move the service between Déli, Keleti and Kelenföld. Open the train details before paying and check both ends of the trip. For Vienna or Budapest, leave room before an onward connection because a disrupted through train can leave few same-day alternatives.
Western routes offer daytime and overnight choices
From Munich, you can choose a daytime EuroCity itinerary or a through overnight EuroNight. The daytime trip runs via Villach and takes about 9 hours 25 minutes. Overnight, the train reaches Munich Ost in about 10 hours 10 minutes and Stuttgart about 13 hours after leaving Zagreb. Check whether the daytime booking shows a through coach or a change at Villach.
Zurich has a through overnight EuroNight via Ljubljana and Villach. The base timetable is about 13 hours 40 minutes, but a current engineering diversion can push the trip close to 16 hours. Give a Swiss connection some breathing room. The headline time may not apply on your date.
Seats, couchettes and sleeping cars are available on the Munich, Stuttgart and Zurich night trains. Limited fares start at €24.90 for a seat, €34.90 in a six-berth couchette and €59.90 in a three-bed sleeper. Couchette and sleeper passengers get breakfast. Compare the accommodation you would actually accept, then reserve it before fixing hotels or onward trains. A ticket or rail pass does not hold a bed.
Split by train is a full-day journey
The Zagreb to Split train makes sense when a central arrival and the rail journey matter more than a short travel day. Daytime services take roughly seven to eight hours, with a pattern that changes by season and day. Check the exact departure rather than expecting a frequent clockface service.
Seat reservations are compulsory on the listed daytime trains to Split and cost €1.06. HŽPP's seaside offer takes 40% off eligible counter tickets, while domestic tickets bought online cost 10% less than ordinary counter prices. The benefits have different conditions. Compare the final ticket, reservation and refund rules instead of treating the first discount as the complete price.
A seasonal domestic night train runs through Zagreb to Split on selected summer nights. The current offer includes seats and sleeping cars, with a berth charged separately from the ticket. This is not a nightly, year-round service. Confirm the operating date and bed category before using it to replace a hotel.
Šibenik works by rail when the summer connection at Perković suits the trip, although a bus replaces the branch train on some dates. Do not assume a useful through train to Zadar without checking the exact-date HŽPP itinerary. Dubrovnik is outside the passenger rail network, so travel by train to Split and continue by coach. Leave enough time for the road connection.
Ticket channels change the final cost
For a domestic journey, start with the HŽPP website or app. Domestic e-tickets cost 10% less than ticket-office prices, while tickets bought on the train cost 10% more than at the office. Zagreb Glavni kolodvor also has domestic ticket machines. A promotional fare, reservation or sleeping-car booking may need another channel, so price should not be the only check.
For an international journey, use the railway that sells the exact train. HŽPP international ticket offices sell its listed travel and reservation products. The western night trains are also available through the German international and Nightjet systems. Special offers are limited and cannot simply be bought on the train. Keep the itinerary on one ticket when connection protection matters.
Unused HŽPP tickets are not exchangeable. If the fare allows a refund, a ticket bought through the HŽPP website or app needs a written request; other refundable HŽPP tickets are handled at a ticket office. International and promotional products may have separate refund restrictions. Read the terms before payment. An inflexible bargain is poor value when it sits behind an uncertain flight or ferry connection.
Rail passes still need train-specific bookings
Interrail and Eurail cover eligible HŽPP suburban, regional, InterCity and night trains. The pass is the travel entitlement, not a universal reservation. On the current seaside offer's daytime Zagreb to Split trains, the compulsory reservation costs €1.06 and applies only to the named train and date.
Reservations are optional on the Ljubljana, Vienna and Budapest trains. A reservation is compulsory on the daytime EuroCity to Munich from 1 June to 1 September. Check the exact train in the pass planner. One Croatian rule does not fit every border crossing.
EuroNight services to Munich, Stuttgart and Zurich require a reservation. Your seat, couchette or sleeper must be booked separately from the pass. Secure the accommodation first if a bed is essential, then check reservation delivery and the printed stations on every train in the itinerary.
The airport needs a road transfer
Zagreb Airport has no passenger rail link to the terminal. The Pleso Prijevoz shuttle connects it with Zagreb Central Bus Station in 35 to 40 minutes. That bus station and Zagreb Glavni kolodvor are separate places, so allow time for the local transfer between them.
ZET bus 290 is another option. It runs between Kvaternik Square and Velika Gorica via the terminal, taking about 45 to 50 minutes for the airport journey. This is useful only when Kvaternik Square suits your final address better than the central bus station.
For a flight after a long train ride, work backwards from the airline's bag-drop or check-in deadline. Add a margin for a late train, the transfer between stations and road traffic. Shortly before leaving, check the rail service, airport bus departure point and next workable backup.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a bicycle on an HŽPP train to Zagreb?
One bicycle may travel with you. A folded bike goes as personal luggage on any HŽPP train; an assembled bicycle needs designated space on a suitable train and a €1.99 domestic ticket. Larger cycling groups must notify HŽPP five days ahead.
Can I take a dog on an HŽPP train to Zagreb?
Small dogs up to 30 cm travel free in a carrier or on your lap. Larger dogs need a pet passport, a tight leash, a muzzle and a half-price second-class ticket. One passenger may bring one dog or one carrier.
What compensation applies when an HŽPP train is delayed?
Delays of 60 to 119 minutes qualify for 25% of the ticket price; delays longer than 120 minutes qualify for 50%. Compensation below €4 is not paid. Submit the form with a validated e-ticket or certified original paper ticket.
How much luggage can I take on an HŽPP train?
Luggage above 30 kg, or too large to fit above or below your seat, costs €3.58 per item regardless of distance. Pack ordinary bags into the available luggage space, and keep valuables with you because HŽPP does not cover theft or damage.
