Use Split Main Station for almost every rail journey; it puts the ferry port, bus terminal and old town within an easy onward transfer.
Split Main Station is the default
For long-distance trains between Zagreb and central Split, book Split, the station at Obala kneza Domagoja 9. The main coach terminal and ferry port share the same waterfront transport area, with the Riva and old town nearby. Confirm the full station name before paying. Arriving at the wrong stop adds a local transfer you do not need.
Split Predgrađe is a separate station at Hercegovačka on the local rail corridor towards Kaštel Stari. It can suit an address north of the centre, but Split remains the practical choice for the port and old town. Before choosing Predgrađe, look at the stopping pattern and work out the last leg across the city.
The rail, coach and ferry terminals sit close together, though each has its own departure information and boarding point. Match the train number as well as the destination. Then find the coach stand or ferry berth before leaving the rail platform area. The short distance helps, but a tight self-connection is still risky.
The Zagreb route trades speed for a central arrival
The Zagreb train makes sense when a city-centre arrival or a daylight journey through inland Croatia matters more than speed. Summer daytime journeys take about seven to eight hours, and departures are limited. Compare the full train and coach timings for your date rather than assuming rail will be quicker.
Daytime trains run through Knin and Perković before reaching Split. A seasonal domestic night service also runs through Zagreb during part of the summer, with a different overnight pattern on other dates. Zagreb is too far for a sensible day trip. Check the operating day, journey time and useful return before committing.
Reservations are compulsory on the daytime Zagreb Main Station to Split trains in the summer service. Track work or technical problems can bring replacement buses on part or all of the journey too. Read the traffic notices on the day and give yourself a realistic margin before a ferry, coach or flight.
HŽPP has contracted six electro-diesel sets for the Zagreb to Split route, with service due to begin during 2026. Do not assume a particular departure uses the new fleet during the rollout. If train type or step-free travel matters, inspect the journey details and arrange accessibility help separately.
Summer night trains require exact-date planning
A seasonal sleeper from Vienna or Budapest can replace both a hotel night and a long day on the rails. The two trains have different calendars and accommodation. Confirm the operator, departure station and berth type before arranging another fixed connection around the arrival.
The Vienna service is a EuroNight, not a year-round Nightjet. In 2026 it leaves Vienna on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 29 May to 25 September. Return trains leave Split on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays through 26 September. Seats, couchettes and sleeping cars are available, with limited one-way fares from €24.90 for a seat, €34.90 for a couchette and €59.90 for a private sleeping compartment. The mandatory reservation is included.
The Budapest Adria InterCity runs from 3 July to 4 October 2026, between two and four times a week. It has no seats in 2026, so the choice is a couchette or sleeper. One-way fares start at €46 for a couchette berth, €108 for a sleeping-car place and €190 for a private compartment. Check the calendar carefully: July and August use alternating dates, while September and October use selected weekdays.
Book the accommodation once your date is firm. The Vienna train has a cheaper seated option; the Budapest train does not. Before paying, check whether the quoted price covers one person, one berth or the whole compartment.
Other Croatian cities often need a change or coach
Šibenik works by rail only when the connection at Perković suits the trip. Summer Zagreb to Split trains connect with local services between Perković and Šibenik, while replacement buses cover the branch on some dates. Check both legs together. The first arrival time is not the end of the journey.
For Rijeka or Pula, plan for changes rather than expecting a direct train from Split. Open the complete itinerary, count every change and compare the final arrival with a coach. Staying on rail can use most of a day.
Dubrovnik is outside Croatia's passenger railway network, so take a coach for the land journey from Split. Zadar should not be treated as a direct rail trip either. For both cities, confirm the coach departure point and allow enough time to move from the rail platform to the separate stand.
Ticket value depends on the sales channel
Compare the final HŽPP fare online and at the station before choosing the sales channel. Domestic e-tickets are 10% cheaper than ticket-office fares, while buying on the train costs 10% more than at the office. A separate summer offer gives 40% off eligible counter tickets for journeys longer than 25 km. Check the final EUR total before paying.
Online purchase is the sensible choice when the date is firm and the conditions suit you. An unused ticket cannot simply be exchanged, although refunds are possible, including by written request for an online ticket. Read the deadline and method before paying. The cheaper channel is not automatically the least flexible.
In 2026, free domestic rail travel is available to children, school pupils, full-time students, pensioners, people aged 65 or over and eligible disabled travellers. Most groups need an HŽPP smart card with the annual entitlement recorded on it. Check the eligibility documents before selecting the concession, then carry the required card on the train.
Rail passes still need a reservation
Interrail and Eurail Passes cover eligible HŽPP suburban, regional, InterCity and night trains, but they do not replace a compulsory reservation. On the daytime Zagreb to Split trains and the summer domestic night trains from Osijek, Vukovar and Vinkovci to Split via Zagreb, the reservation costs €1.06. It is separate from the pass and from any sleeper charge.
Boarding an affected train with only the pass can leave you without a valid place. Confirm the train category and reservation record before travel, particularly in summer. The reservation is tied to the train and date printed on it.
International sleepers have their own rules. The Vienna EuroNight ticket includes its reservation. An Interrail or Eurail Pass is accepted on the Budapest Adria only with the required couchette or sleeper reservation, as the 2026 train has no seated accommodation.
Station facilities reward a little preparation
Split has a staffed ticket office, though its hours can change temporarily, and a domestic ticket machine. Sort out any ticket problem before the departure window gets tight. A closed counter is a poor surprise when a pass reservation still needs attention.
Small and medium lockers cost €2 for each 24-hour period started; a large locker costs €3. Check the size and collection time before paying. They are handy for a visit to central Split, but there may not be a free locker when you arrive.
Passengers who need help boarding or leaving the train should request assistance at least 24 hours before travel. Mobile elevating platforms are available at Split and Split Predgrađe, but the equipment does not guarantee staff assistance for a particular departure. Give the exact train and support needed, then confirm the arrangement.
The centre, port and airport need different transfers
Walk from Split Main Station to the Riva, old town or nearby ferry and coach terminals when the weather and your luggage make that comfortable. Find the exact accommodation entrance, ferry berth or coach stand first. A large bag carried to the wrong end of the waterfront quickly cancels out the convenience of arriving centrally.
For regular travel beyond easy walking distance, HŽPP and Promet sell a joint monthly ticket. It covers unlimited rail trips between Split and Primorski Dolac and unlimited bus trips in Split fare zones 1, 2 and 3. Check that a monthly pass suits your stay before buying it; this is not a general single-journey ticket.
Split Airport is about 20 km from the city and has shuttle-bus, public-bus and taxi connections. There is no active passenger rail link; the proposed airport-port railway remains an infrastructure project. Summer road traffic can be heavy, so confirm the pickup point and allow extra time before a flight.
Travel-day checks protect onward connections
Start by confirming Split rather than Split Predgrađe, then match the operator, train number and operating day. The summer daytime Zagreb to Split trains need the separate €1.06 reservation; the named seasonal domestic night trains need it too. A night train also needs the correct accommodation and seasonal date.
Look at the rail arrival alongside the ferry sailing, coach departure or flight deadline. Leave room for a replacement bus, luggage collection and the walk between separate boarding points. Recheck the departure on the day instead of trusting the time saved when you first planned the trip.
Rail is the better choice for a central arrival, an overnight option or the journey itself. A coach often makes more sense when the train is indirect or too slow for your plans. Before paying, confirm the station, EUR total, refund conditions, reservation and final connection.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take a bicycle on a train to Split?
Daily trains IC 520 and IC 523 have a bicycle compartment with ten spaces. IC 521, IC 522 and night trains accept only folding bikes as hand luggage. A domestic bicycle ticket costs €1.99. Confirm the train and bicycle space before travel.
Can I take a dog on an HŽPP train to Split?
Small dogs up to 30 cm tall travel free in a carrier or on your lap. A larger dog needs a pet passport, short leash, muzzle and a ticket priced at 50% of the second-class fare. One passenger may bring one dog or one carrier.
What compensation applies when an HŽPP train is delayed?
A delay of 60 to 119 minutes can qualify for compensation worth 25% of the ticket price. For a delay of 120 minutes or more, the rate is 50%. Keep the ticket and obtain confirmation of the delay before submitting the claim.
Can I use the Vienna to Split EuroNight for a journey within Croatia?
No. The 2026 EuroNight does not carry passengers solely between Croatian stations. Use a domestic HŽPP service for travel within Croatia, and reserve the EuroNight only for an international journey on one of its operating dates.
What does a bed cost on a domestic night train to Split?
The sleeping-car supplement is €9 in a three-berth compartment, €13 in a two-berth compartment and €25 for single occupancy, added to the train ticket. Buy at an HŽPP ticket office or request the reservation remotely at least 48 hours before departure.
