Train stations in Amsterdam

Train routes to and from Amsterdam

Before you travel

Amsterdam Centraal is the first station most travellers should check for longer rail trips, but Amsterdam is not a one-station city. Treat the station named on your ticket as part of the journey plan, not as a detail to confirm at the last minute.

If your trip starts outside the old centre, a secondary Amsterdam station can be the easier choice. Use the station list to recognise the main alternatives, then follow the exact station name in your booking flow or timetable.

Amsterdam station names usually keep the city name followed by the area, such as Centraal, Zuid, or Sloterdijk. Do not assume a ticket for Amsterdam means Amsterdam Centraal unless the ticket actually says so.

Frequently asked questions

Which side of Amsterdam Centraal should I use for the city centre?

Use the Centrumzijde or Stationsplein side for the historic centre and trams. Use the IJzijde for ferries and the bus station. If you are meeting someone, name the side rather than saying only "outside Centraal".

Are there luggage lockers at Amsterdam Centraal?

Yes. Amsterdam Centraal has self-service luggage lockers. Follow the station signs or check the current station map instead of relying on an old location description, and confirm access and availability if storage is essential.

Can I use the same contactless card on Amsterdam trains, trams and metro services?

Yes. OVpay works on NS trains and GVB trams and metro services. Keep one payment method for the whole ride: present the physical card, phone or watch used at entry again when you leave. A plastic card and its wallet version count as different methods.

Is a standard NS ticket tied to one departure?

A regular NS one-way ticket is valid for its fixed route and travel date rather than a reserved departure. Time-specific products are different: an NS PriceTime Deal ticket is tied to the time slot printed on it. Check the product name before taking a later train.

Do children need a full-price ticket on Dutch trains?

Children aged 0 to 3 travel free without a ticket. Children aged 4 to 11 can travel free with Kids Vrij when accompanied by someone aged 12 or older, but each child needs a personal OV-chipkaart with Kids Vrij active. Arrange it before reaching the platform.
