Frequently asked questions

What trains does ŽFBH run?

Two Talgo services each way per day between Sarajevo and Čapljina, calling at Mostar, with a seasonal weekend extension across the border to Ploče. North of Sarajevo it runs to Maglaj through Zenica, plus local trains out to Visoko and Pazarić. That is the whole passenger timetable.

Can I use an Interrail or Eurail Pass on ŽFBH trains?

Buy the ticket instead. Interrail and Eurail's own materials disagree with each other about whether ŽFBH is covered, and ŽFBH publishes no pass terms to settle it, so a pass is not something to rely on at the barrier here.

How do I buy a ŽFBH ticket?

At the station counter, in convertible marks. ŽFBH normally sells online through a form on its homepage up to two weeks ahead, with collection at the station, but online sales have been switched off for a technical fault and the Ploče trains were never sold online. Allow time to queue, because the Sarajevo ticket office keeps roughly 06:00 to 17:00 hours.

Do ŽFBH trains need seat reservations?

No. There are no seat reservations on any train in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so you board and sit where you like. On a service running twice a day that has never been a problem for space, though the left hand side going south from Sarajevo is the one to aim for.

Does ŽFBH run to Banja Luka or across the border?

No. Its northern line stops at Maglaj and no longer reaches Doboj, so there is no ŽFBH route into Republika Srpska and no connection to make. The only ŽFBH service that crosses a border is the seasonal Sarajevo to Ploče train into Croatia, and that runs on three days a week in summer only.
