Frecciarossa or Italo
Trenitalia's Frecciarossa leaves Napoli Centrale from early morning, often twice an hour or more at busy times. Italo runs its own direct trains to Milan through the day. Neither needs a change.
The quickest Frecciarossa takes about 4 hours 30 minutes, and Italo's fastest trains take just over 4 hours. Trains with more stops take about 5 hours. Choose on price and departure time.
Fast trains and stopping trains
Every train stops in Rome, and the pattern north of it varies. Many also stop at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Bologna Centrale and Reggio Emilia AV, while the quickest skip some of these. If you want a stop in Florence on the way north, pick a train that calls there.
Italo trains stop in Rome, at Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina, and depending on the train also at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Bologna Centrale and Reggio Emilia AV.
Stations in Naples and Milan
Board at Napoli Centrale, the main station in the city centre. Many trains also call at Napoli Afragola, north of the city, which suits you only if you are staying out that way.
In Milan, stay on to Milano Centrale, the city's main station. Some trains also call at Milano Rogoredo in the south-east of the city.
Tickets and Interrail passes
Frecciarossa fares come as Base, Economy and Super Economy. Base is the most flexible, with changes and refunds allowed; Economy allows changes, and Super Economy has limited availability. Italo tickets start from €34.90 one way, with the cheapest fares going to early bookers.
On an Interrail pass, take the Frecciarossa. The pass covers Trenitalia, but every Frecciarossa requires a seat reservation, which costs €13. Italo is not covered by the pass at all, so on Italo you need a normal ticket.
Timetables change with the new European timetable on 13 December 2026, so look at your exact train again if you are travelling after that date.
