Direct EuroCity trains
The through trains keep the whole trip to one ticket and one seat. They are EuroCity services shared by the Swiss and Italian railways, and SBB sells them.
On weekdays one fewer EuroCity runs in each direction than at weekends. SBB expects that reduction to last until at least the end of 2028, while Italian infrastructure work continues between Domodossola and Milan. The Simplon Tunnel is also being renovated in six-month stages each year until 2028.
Tickets and fares from Geneva
Fares start at CHF 41 in second class and CHF 88 in first class, and the seat reservation is included. Those are the lowest advertised prices, and the fare you see depends on the date and how early you book: the earlier you buy, the better the chance of a low fare.
Standard fares can be bought up to 120 days before departure. Supersaver tickets are released from 120 days out, on sale until 21, 14 or 7 days before travel depending on the offer. They cannot be exchanged or refunded, you must take the train you chose, and the Half-Fare travelcard, GA travelcard and child reductions do not apply to them.
Reservations with a rail pass
A reservation is compulsory on every EuroCity between Switzerland and Italy. A ticket bought from SBB already includes it. On an Interrail or Eurail pass you buy it separately for €13 to €17 in either class through the pass provider's reservation service.
