Renfe's AVE runs four direct trains a day between Granada and Madrid, taking around 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes. Unlike several other Spanish AVE corridors, there is currently no low-cost or independent-operator alternative here.

Why there is no cheap alternative on this corridor

Renfe's low-cost Avlo brand covers Madrid to Valencia, Madrid to Alicante, Madrid to Málaga, Madrid to Seville, Madrid to Murcia, Murcia to Valladolid, and Madrid to Gijón, but Granada is not on that list, confirmed on Avlo's own route page.

Iryo and OUIGO, which compete directly with Renfe on Madrid to Barcelona and several other Spanish high-speed lines, do not run their own trains to Granada either, confirmed on both operators' own destinations pages. Iryo does sell a "Conecta" ticket for Madrid to Granada, but that is a multimodal connection product, not an Iryo train: Iryo's own description of Conecta calls it a platform that links Iryo trains with "other modes of transport", so book it expecting a change onto a different operator or mode partway through, not one continuous Iryo service. OUIGO Spain's own network stops at cities such as Zaragoza, Valencia, and Tarragona, without reaching Andalusia's interior.

So on this specific route, Renfe's full-service AVE is not one option among several. It is the only one, and there is no reason to wait around for a cheaper brand to show up before booking.

Journey time and how many trains run

Renfe runs four direct AVE departures a day on this corridor, spaced from just after 6am to early evening. The fastest of the four takes about 3 hours 27 minutes; the other three run close behind, in the region of 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes.

If none of those four departure windows suits you, Renfe's own booking engine also shows several slower combinations that involve a change and add an hour or more to the trip, some running close to 5 hours 30 minutes. These fill the gaps between the direct trains, so check whether your search result is direct before you book if a fast journey matters to you.

Because Granada sits at the end of a branch off the main Madrid-Córdoba-Málaga/Seville line, journeys here run a little longer than the shortest AVE corridors out of Madrid. That is a function of distance and branch routing, not a slower or older train: the same Renfe AVE rolling stock and top speeds apply for most of the trip.

Stations at each end

Granada is served by a single long-distance station on Avenida de los Andaluces, a short walk from the city centre and often called simply "Andaluces" locally, after its street. Renfe's own station page confirms Alta Velocidad, Larga Distancia, and Media Distancia services all use this one station, so there is no separate high-speed terminal to confuse it with.

Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes is the arrival point for the direct trains, and it sits centrally enough that your AVE ticket includes a free onward journey on Madrid's Cercanías suburban network, a detail Renfe calls Combinado Cercanías. Use it to reach a hotel or a Metro connection without buying a second ticket.

Fares, reservations, and rail passes

Fares on the four direct trains start from around EUR 25 to 35 for the cheapest available seats on the earliest, fastest departure, and run higher, roughly EUR 70 to 90, on the other three direct departures depending on demand and how far ahead you book. These figures come from Renfe's own live booking engine, checked for two separate dates on 2026-09-03, not from a resale site, so treat them as a live snapshot and compare the total for your specific date and train.

If you are travelling on an Interrail or Eurail Pass, the good news is that Madrid to Granada is one of Interrail's officially listed AVE domestic routes. The catch is that a seat reservation is still mandatory and costs extra, separate from the pass itself: Interrail's own reservation service prices a second-class seat from EUR 10, a first-class seat from EUR 13, and a premium first-class seat with a meal at EUR 23.50. Book that reservation as early as you can, since AVE seats for pass holders are limited and can sell out well before the train itself is full.
