Madrid to Malaga by train

The Madrid to Málaga train covers 417 km (259 miles) in as little as 2 hours 30 minutes on the fastest AVE services. Four operators share the route: Renfe AVE, Avlo, OUIGO, and Iryo, with around 15 to 20 daily departures between them. All trains leave from Madrid Puerta de Atocha and arrive at Málaga María Zambrano.

For most travellers, book Renfe AVE. It is the fastest, runs most often, and is the only operator on this route that accepts an Interrail or Eurail pass. Choose Avlo or OUIGO when the cheapest fare matters more than the extra 30 to 50 minutes they add. The station matters too: every service uses Madrid Puerta de Atocha, not Chamartín. Check your ticket before you pay.

The route works in both directions, so the guidance below applies whether you are travelling from Madrid or from Málaga.

Train Companies and Options

Four operators use the same dedicated high-speed track. The differences that matter are price, journey time, and booking rules.

Book Renfe AVE for the fastest trip, the most departure times, or if you are on a rail pass. Pick Avlo or OUIGO if the fare is what matters and you can spare the extra 30 to 50 minutes and a Córdoba stop. Iryo is worth checking when its price undercuts AVE on a particular date.

Renfe AVE

AVE is the flagship service on this route, with the most daily departures and the widest spread of seating classes. Trains reach 310 km/h and cover the route in as little as 2 hours 42 minutes on direct services, with some completing it in around 2 hours 30 minutes.

Renfe runs three fare tiers: Promo (cheapest, no changes or refunds), Promo+ (some changes for a fee), and Base (fully flexible). Book Promo if your date is fixed. Pay up for Promo+ or Base only if your plans might shift. Promo places sell out first, so a few weeks ahead is what gets you the low fare.

Avlo

Avlo is Renfe’s budget high-speed brand. Trains stop at intermediate stations including Córdoba and Puente Genil, which adds around 40 minutes compared with a direct AVE. Avlo uses the S-112 train with 438 seats.

Tickets start from €7 for the cheapest advance fares. The extras can add up. Seat selection costs €8; an extra suitcase is €10 if added at booking and €15 if added later. A stripped Avlo fare with bags and a chosen seat can close the gap to an AVE Promo, so compare before assuming Avlo is cheaper on your specific date.

Avlo runs roughly 2 trains daily. Renfe Bono AVE passes are accepted. Interrail and Eurail are not.

Iryo

Iryo launched in Spain in December 2022 and resumed services on this route from May 2026 following the restoration of the Álora line section. It now runs up to 10 daily departures.

Journey time is around 3 hours. Iryo positions itself as a premium private alternative to AVE, and the on-board experience is comparable. It suits travellers with two large suitcases, since the luggage allowance is generous. Iryo does not publish a fixed starting fare for this corridor, so compare directly against AVE for your exact date rather than assuming it will be cheaper. If you have a rail pass, use AVE: it is the only operator here that accepts Interrail and Eurail.

OUIGO

OUIGO is the French-owned budget high-speed operator. Its double-decker trains run 3 daily services between Madrid and Málaga, all stopping at Córdoba. Journey time is around 3 hours 2 minutes.

Renfe opens bookings up to 90 days ahead. OUIGO and Iryo open weeks to months out. Cheap fares go early on popular dates, so compare once you have a date and book the first fare you are happy with rather than waiting for a lower one.

Travel time and scenery

Fast AVE services cover the route in 2 hours 30 to 2 hours 42 minutes. Avlo takes around 3 hours 20 minutes because of its intermediate stops.

The scenery picks up south of Córdoba, where the Guadalquivir plain gives way to Andalusian hill country. As the train closes in on Málaga, it runs through tunnels and over viaducts in the Álora gorge area. Sit on the left side of the train from Madrid for the best views. The approach into Málaga on a clear day shows the city and the coast.

Train vs flight

Flights from Madrid Barajas to Málaga take around 1 hour 15 minutes, but airport check-in, security, and baggage collection add several hours each end. The AVE runs city-centre to city-centre in 2 hours 30 minutes: Atocha sits on Madrid’s Metro Line 1, and María Zambrano is wired directly into Málaga’s bus and metro network. For most travellers, the train is faster door-to-door.

Most travellers want a direct AVE and can skip this section. It matters if Córdoba is your destination (several AVE and all OUIGO services call there) or if you have booked Avlo or OUIGO and want to know why they take longer.

Madrid Puerta de Atocha

All Madrid to Málaga trains leave from Madrid Puerta de Atocha (official name: Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes). Do not book from Chamartín; that station handles routes to the north and has no direct services to Málaga.

Getting to Atocha is simple. Metro Line 1 has a station directly below the terminal. Cercanías commuter trains run from the lower level, linking Atocha with the city’s other main stations. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your train.

Getting from the station

For the historic centre, the C2 bus from the Cercanías exit runs every 12 minutes and is the straightforward option. Heading for the Costa del Sol or the airport, take the Cercanías C1, which runs every 20 minutes and reaches Torremolinos and Fuengirola without a change. Use the metro for central Málaga rather than the old town.

When to book

A few weeks ahead gives you the best spread of fares. Cheap Promo and budget fares go first on popular dates. Fridays and weekends from Madrid are the busiest and most expensive; midweek travel is cheaper if you can flex. Once you find a fare you are comfortable with, book it. Prices on this route climb as trains fill.

Avlo has a 25 kg weight limit per passenger.

Rail passes

On this route, Interrail and Eurail passes are only valid on Renfe AVE. A seat reservation is compulsory and is not included in the pass. It costs around €22 in second class and €27 in first class. Book through renfe.com or the Rail Planner app.

Do not board an Avlo, OUIGO, or Iryo service on a pass. It will not be accepted, and you would have to buy a full ticket on the spot.

Activate your travel day in the Interrail or Eurail app before you board. This replaced the old paper Travel Diary.

A few more rules worth knowing:

• OUIGO does not accept passes.

• Avlo accepts Renfe’s own Bono AVE passes, not Interrail or Eurail.

• If you live in Spain, a Spain Interrail Pass cannot be used for domestic journeys. You need a Global Interrail Pass.

Pass reservation places on AVE are limited and sell out before standard seats on busy trains. Book as soon as your dates are set, especially in summer and over Easter.
