The Paris to Bordeaux train covers around 500 km in as little as 2 hours 8 minutes. Two operators share the route: TGV INOUI for a full-service experience, and OUIGO for the lowest fares. Combined, they run around 29 direct trains daily. Every ticket includes a mandatory seat reservation. There are no walk-on fares on this route.

All trains depart from Paris Montparnasse and arrive at Bordeaux Saint-Jean. Both stations are centrally located. Tickets go on sale around 90 days before departure.

Which train is right for you

TGV INOUI and OUIGO are both high-speed services operated by SNCF Voyageurs. They use the same tracks but are separate products with different prices, onboard experiences, and booking rules.

Choose TGV INOUI if you want free Wi-Fi, an onboard cafe-bar, or a flexible Business Premiere fare. Standard class and First Class both include Wi-Fi and access to the cafe-bar. Business Premiere takes flexibility further: free cancellations and exchanges until 30 minutes after departure, lounge access before boarding, and priority boarding.

Choose OUIGO for the lowest fare. OUIGO ESSENTIEL starts from €16 per adult and a fixed €8 for children under 12. The trade-off is a stripped-back service: no buffet car, no free Wi-Fi, and strict add-on rules. Pack food and drink before you board. There is nothing to buy on the train.

One thing catches first-timers: Interrail and Eurail passes do not cover OUIGO. If you have a rail pass, confirm your specific train is TGV INOUI before booking.

OUIGO ESSENTIEL is the base ticket. It includes one cabin bag (55 x 35 x 25 cm) stored under your seat and one personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm). Add-ons must be selected at booking:

If there is any chance your plans may change, add OUIGO FLEX when you first book. It cannot be added after the booking is complete. Without it, any change costs €19 per passenger. If you forgot FLEX and need to change, check OUIGO SWAP first. It is a free service that lets you resell your ticket or join a waitlist on a full train.

SNCF Connect also shows OUIGO Train Classique on some searches, a slower intercity service that takes significantly longer than OUIGO Grande Vitesse. If journey time matters, filter specifically for OUIGO Grande Vitesse when searching.

How to book

Tickets go on sale around 90 days before departure, with July and August trains sometimes released earlier. Both operators use dynamic pricing. The cheapest fares are furthest from the date; popular Friday and Sunday departures sell out early-release prices fast.

For OUIGO, the €16 floor applies to the earliest advance bookings on low-demand departures. Book early if you want the cheapest fare. The gap between early and last-minute pricing is substantial on busy routes.

OUIGO’s lowest fares are usually only available through OUIGO’s own platforms. Use Trainline or SNCF Connect to compare both operators in a single search.

Ticket flexibility

Rail passes on this route

Interrail passes (for European residents) and Eurail passes (for non-European residents) are valid on TGV INOUI trains on this route. They do not cover OUIGO. If you travel on OUIGO, you need a separate ticket regardless of which pass you hold.

Even with a valid pass, a seat reservation is compulsory on TGV INOUI. There are no walk-on places. Book your reservation through SNCF Connect before you travel. Leaving it until the last minute puts your journey at risk on busy departures, particularly in summer when pass-holder places fill quickly.

Both the France Pass (domestic travel within France) and the Global Pass (over 30 European countries) are valid on TGV INOUI services here. Paris Montparnasse: departure station

All TGV INOUI trains and most OUIGO trains to Bordeaux depart from Paris Montparnasse. The station has two main areas and the difference matters.

TGV INOUI trains leave from the main concourse (Halls 1 and 2). Most OUIGO trains also use the main concourse, but some use Hall 3 Vaugirard, a separate building on the south side of the station that is not obvious from the main entrance. Check your ticket or the SNCF Connect app for your exact hall before you leave home. Arriving at the wrong building and missing your train is a common mistake.

Some OUIGO trains depart from suburban Paris stations rather than Montparnasse: Paris Aéroport Roissy CDG 2, Paris Marne-la-Vallée Chessy, or Paris Massy TGV. These services take considerably longer, up to 3 hours 43 minutes, because of the additional stops. If speed matters, filter for departures from Paris Montparnasse when searching.

Metro lines 4, 6, 12, and 13 all serve Montparnasse-Bienvenue station, a short walk from the main entrance. Allow extra time to navigate to your hall before departure.

Arriving in Bordeaux

All trains arrive at Bordeaux Saint-Jean, the city’s main station, in the city centre. Trams and buses leave from directly outside. Tram Line C reaches the centre in a few minutes.

For Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport, allow 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or public bus. Line Liane 1 runs between the city and the airport.

Train times

Around 29 direct trains run daily between Paris Montparnasse and Bordeaux Saint-Jean. The first departure from Paris is in the early morning; the last is late in the evening. Exact numbers vary by day and season.

Most trains are non-stop. A smaller number of TGV INOUI services call at Angoulême and take slightly longer. If journey time is a priority, check whether your train is non-stop when searching on SNCF Connect.

Luggage and extras

TGV INOUI allows two large bags per passenger (up to approximately 85 x 55 x 35 cm each) plus a smaller carry-on. Luggage racks are at the ends of each car and above the seats.

OUIGO has stricter limits. OUIGO ESSENTIEL includes one cabin bag (55 x 35 x 25 cm) and one personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm). OUIGO PLUS adds an extra or XL bag for +€9. Extra luggage, bikes, and pets can only be added at booking, not at the platform.

For accessibility assistance, SNCF operates an Accès Plus service that must be pre-booked. Contact SNCF Connect or call the Accès Plus line before your travel date.

Guide dogs and assistance dogs travel free on all SNCF trains. Small pets in carriers are permitted on TGV INOUI for a fee; large dogs need a leash, muzzle, and a separate ticket.
