Train tickets

Getting from Bristol to Amsterdam by train takes two trains and a cross-London transfer. There is no direct service from Bristol, so every journey goes via London Paddington (GWR), across London to St Pancras International, and then on to Amsterdam with Eurostar. Expect around seven to eight hours door to door.

Bring a valid passport. Eurostar is a border-crossing service, and a passport is required for all passengers at check-in — a national ID card alone is not sufficient.

The total journey from Bristol is approximately seven to eight hours, depending on which Eurostar you take and how quickly you make the London transfer.

GWR: Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington

Great Western Railway runs frequent trains from Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington. Fast services take approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Some stopping services take up to 2 hours.

Advance tickets can start from around £5 on quiet departures, but most trains on popular morning routes cost considerably more. Prices depend on the departure time, date, and how early you book. Check gwr.com or the National Rail website for live timetables and fares.

Interrail and Eurail passes do not cover UK domestic trains. Buy a GWR ticket separately regardless of which pass you hold.

Do not book a GWR arrival at Paddington less than 90 minutes before your Eurostar departs. You still need to cross London.

Cross-London: Paddington to St Pancras

This is the part most people underestimate. Paddington and St Pancras are on opposite sides of central London, roughly six kilometres apart. Allow at least 60 minutes between your Paddington arrival and your Eurostar departure.

Underground: Take the Circle or Hammersmith and City line from Paddington towards King’s Cross St Pancras. The journey is direct and takes around 20–25 minutes on the train. With platform time and walking at both ends, allow 35–40 minutes. The St Pancras entrance is right next to King’s Cross Underground.

Taxi or rideshare: Faster if traffic is reasonable. Paddington to St Pancras typically takes 15–25 minutes by taxi. Worth it if you have heavy bags or a tight connection.

Bus: Slower and less predictable. Not the right choice if you are working to a Eurostar departure time.

Arrive at St Pancras at least 45 minutes before your Eurostar departs. The ticket gates close 30 minutes before departure. The train will not wait.

Eurostar: London St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal

Eurostar’s direct trains take approximately 4 hours 19 minutes from St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal. Some services stop at Brussels, where you stay on board and the train continues. No station change is needed.

Eurostar operates from an international terminal at St Pancras. Before boarding you go through UK border control, a French border check, and security screening. It works like a small airport, but faster on most days. First-timers are often surprised that French immigration is in London — it is, and you clear it before you leave.

Arrive 45–60 minutes before departure. Ticket gates close 30 minutes before the train.

Travel documents: Passport required for all passengers. EU citizens also need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travel. Complete Eurostar’s Advance Passenger Information form with your passport details before you go — you can do this through the Eurostar website or app once you have a booking reference.

Travel classes

  • Eurostar Standard: Standard seats, free Wi-Fi, power sockets. Access to the Eurostar Cafe for food and drinks. Two bags plus a small daypack per person.
  • Eurostar Plus: Larger reclining seats, a light meal served at your seat. Only available on routes to and from London.
  • Eurostar Premier: Lounge access at St Pancras, priority check-in, in-seat dining.

Standard fares start from around £44 one way, but prices vary considerably by date and how early you book. Book through eurostar.com or an authorised reseller.

Booking

GWR and Eurostar are two separate bookings. There is no single Bristol-to-Amsterdam ticket.

Book GWR at gwr.com or through the National Rail website. Advance GWR fares are typically released 12 weeks ahead. Cheaper fares go quickly on busy morning services.

Book Eurostar at eurostar.com. Tickets are often available six months ahead, and cheaper Standard fares sell out early on popular routes.

Third-party platforms such as Rail Europe and Omio can show both legs in one search. You are still holding two separate contracts. If your GWR train is delayed and you miss the Eurostar, Eurostar is under no obligation to rebook you — they are a different operator. Build genuine buffer time. An 80-minute gap between your scheduled Paddington arrival and your Eurostar departure is a sensible minimum.

Rail passes and Interrail

An Interrail or Eurail Global Pass covers the Eurostar leg. It does not cover GWR. Buy a separate ticket for Bristol to London.

A mandatory reservation is required for all Interrail and Eurail pass holders on Eurostar. The pass alone does not get you on board. Book the reservation before you travel, not at the station.

Eurostar pass-holder reservation fees for London to the Netherlands:

ClassReservation fee
Eurostar Standard (2nd class pass)€35
Eurostar Plus (1st class pass)€43

Pass-holder reservation places on Eurostar are limited and sell out separately from regular tickets. Book as early as you can. Reservations are non-exchangeable and non-refundable once issued.

Railcards reduce GWR fares for the UK leg. The 16–25 Railcard, 26–30 Railcard, and Two Together Railcard are the most common. None of these apply to the Eurostar portion.

Arriving at Amsterdam Centraal

Eurostar arrives at Amsterdam Centraal, right in the city centre. Border control happens at St Pancras before you board, so you step off the train and walk straight out of the station.

Trams, metro lines, and city buses run from Centraal to the main areas of Amsterdam. Free ferries at the rear of the station cross to Amsterdam Noord. Most central hotels are within a short tram ride or a walkable distance from the station.
