The train from Manchester to London is direct and takes about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. You leave from Manchester Piccadilly and arrive at London Euston. Avanti West Coast is the only company running direct trains on this pair, with several an hour. The cheapest tickets are Advance fares, so book as early as your plans allow.

Board at Manchester Piccadilly

Manchester Piccadilly is the main station, on the south-east side of the city centre. The Metrolink tram stop is under the station, so trams from the city centre arrive right at the building. Trains to London Euston show on the departure board with Avanti West Coast as the operator. If you are staying in the centre, a tram or a taxi is easiest with luggage.

Manchester has other stations, so check your ticket. It says Manchester Piccadilly, and the platform is shown on the board shortly before departure.

Trains leave several times an hour

Avanti runs several trains an hour to London Euston. Some go via Stoke-on-Trent and others via Crewe. They take different times, so check the arrival time and not only the departure. Sunday and public holiday timetables differ, so look at your date before you plan.

If you must reach London for a flight, a show or a meeting, take an earlier train and leave an hour spare.

Pick the right ticket

An Advance ticket is the cheapest. It is for one named train, and you buy it ahead. An Off-Peak ticket allows travel outside the busiest times, and an Anytime ticket works on any train on the day and costs the most.

If your plans are fixed, buy Advance early. If you may change your mind, an Off-Peak ticket gives you more freedom than Advance, at a higher price. A Railcard takes about a third off many fares. There is no set price for the trip, as fares depend on the train and how far ahead you book.

Seat reservations cost nothing

With Avanti the reservation is free. It is included with Advance tickets, and with Anytime or Off-Peak you can add one or sit in any free seat. Reserve if you have luggage or travel as a group.

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid

Interrail Global Passes (for people who live in Europe) and Eurail Global Passes (for people who live outside Europe) are valid on National Rail trains in Great Britain, so this journey on Avanti West Coast is covered. A pass holder can board without a seat reservation. If you live in the UK, a Global Pass covers only one outbound and one inbound journey in your own country, so you cannot use it for an ordinary trip inside Britain. The Interrail Great Britain Pass is sold to residents of other European countries, not to UK residents.

Weekend works in October 2026

Buses replace trains between Rugby and Stafford on 10 and 11 October and on 17 and 18 October 2026, and Avanti trains between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston are affected. Check your train before you go if you travel on those weekends.

What you can reach from London Euston

Euston has its own Underground station on the Northern and Victoria lines, and Euston Square, a short walk away, serves the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. King's Cross and St Pancras International are about 800 metres east along Euston Road, an easy walk. Both are mainline terminals for other routes. Euston bus station is in front of the main entrance.
