Glasgow to London by train

Two main routes connect Glasgow and London by train. Avanti West Coast runs direct services from Glasgow Central to London Euston via the West Coast Main Line. LNER operates trains to London King’s Cross via Edinburgh Waverley, which means a change of train at Edinburgh for most services. The Caledonian Sleeper runs an overnight option if you prefer to arrive in the morning.

Journey times on both main routes run between around 4 hours 30 minutes and 5 hours 30 minutes, depending on the service and whether a connection is involved. The key variable is which London station you need. Euston and King’s Cross are different stations about 2 km apart in central London. Getting that wrong means an unnecessary transfer after a long journey.

Which route to choose

Avanti West Coast is the simpler choice for most travellers. Services run direct from Glasgow Central to London Euston with no change required. The fastest trains complete the journey in around 4 hours 30 minutes. Avanti uses Pendolino and Evero trains on the West Coast Main Line.

LNER trains to King’s Cross usually require a change at Edinburgh Waverley. You take a ScotRail service from Glasgow (Queen Street or Central) to Edinburgh, then pick up an LNER Azuma south. Total journey time including the connection runs from around 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes, depending on when your trains connect. LNER occasionally runs a direct Glasgow service, but it is not the daily default.

Choose Avanti West Coast for a direct journey and Euston arrival. Choose LNER if King’s Cross works better for your London destination, and you are comfortable with the Edinburgh change.

Stations

Glasgow Central is the departure point for Avanti West Coast services. It is Glasgow’s larger station and is straightforward to reach by subway, bus, or taxi.

Glasgow Queen Street is the typical starting point for ScotRail services connecting to Edinburgh Waverley. When you book an LNER journey from Glasgow, check your confirmation to confirm which Glasgow station your connecting ScotRail train uses.

London Euston (Avanti) is a 10-minute walk from both King’s Cross and St Pancras International, which can be useful if you need an onward connection. It is served by the Northern and Victoria lines.

London King’s Cross (LNER) is directly connected to St Pancras International via a shared concourse. Multiple tube lines serve the station.

Always check the train details in your booking confirmation rather than relying on the city name alone. Booking pages often show only “Glasgow” or “London” without specifying the station.

Avanti West Coast runs regular departures throughout the day between Glasgow Central and London Euston. Direct trains take around 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours. First trains leave Glasgow in the early morning; services run through the evening.

LNER journeys via Edinburgh involve a connection, which adds time. A typical end-to-end journey runs around 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes.

Tickets and fares

Ticket types

Three main ticket types cover this route.

Advance tickets are the cheapest option. They are tied to a specific train and are non-refundable in most cases. On the Glasgow to London route, Advance fares typically start from around £25 to £35 when booked early. Popular trains sell out quickly at lower price points.

Off-Peak tickets offer more flexibility. They are valid on trains that run outside the busiest times and can usually be exchanged or refunded for a fee. Off-Peak fares on this route typically range from around £60 to £100 or more, depending on the train and demand.

Anytime tickets are fully flexible and valid on any train. Anytime fares from Glasgow to London start from around £160 each way.

When to book

Tickets go on sale roughly 12 weeks before the departure date. Booking in the first few days after release gives you the best chance of securing a cheap Advance fare. Waiting until two to three weeks before travel means Advance fares on popular trains are often gone, and prices are typically much higher.

If you have flexibility, travelling mid-week tends to offer better Advance prices than Fridays or Sundays, which are busier.

Railcards

Railcards take a third off most Advance and Off-Peak fares. The main options:

• 16 to 25 Railcard (valid to age 26)

• Senior Railcard (age 60+)

• Two Together Railcard (two named adults travelling together)

• Family & Friends Railcard

Each costs around £30 per year. On a single Glasgow to London journey, a Railcard discount on an Off-Peak fare can save £20 to £30 or more. A small number of early-morning trains do not qualify for Railcard discounts; check the specific departure when booking.

Standard Premium and First Class

Avanti West Coast offers Standard Premium class: better seats and more legroom than Standard, without complimentary catering. Both Avanti and LNER offer First Class with complimentary meals and drinks included. On some Advance bookings, First Class is only marginally more expensive than Standard. It is worth a quick look before you confirm.

The Caledonian Sleeper

The Caledonian Sleeper runs overnight between London Euston and Glasgow Central (the Lowland route). Northbound, it departs London around midnight and arrives in Glasgow around 06:30 to 07:00. Southbound, it departs Glasgow in the early evening.

Travelling overnight can save on a night’s accommodation. Accommodation types include Club Car reclining seats and private cabins, including en-suite options. Cabin prices vary significantly by type and demand; check the Caledonian Sleeper website for current fares and availability.

Cabin accommodation always requires a separate reservation and fee. Book early for cabin accommodation on popular dates. Availability is limited and the cheapest cabin options sell out first.

Rail passes

Interrail and Eurail passes are not valid on UK domestic rail services. This route is operated by UK domestic train companies, and those journeys fall outside Interrail and Eurail pass coverage.

The BritRail Pass covers this route. It is sold to non-UK residents and must be bought before you arrive in the UK. With a BritRail pass, seat reservations are not required on most daytime Avanti and LNER services. The Caledonian Sleeper requires a reservation and an accommodation fee regardless of pass type.

If you are a UK resident, BritRail is not available to you. Buy point-to-point tickets through the operator or a ticket retailer instead.

Onboard

Both Avanti and LNER trains offer free Wi-Fi and power sockets. Most seats in Standard Class have access to a tray table and plug sockets.

Avanti trains have an onboard shop. LNER’s Azuma trains allow at-seat food and drink ordering in Standard Class. First Class on both operators includes complimentary catering.

Seat reservations are included automatically with Advance tickets. For Off-Peak and Anytime tickets, reservations are optional but recommended on busy departures. Avanti’s unreserved coach (Coach C on Pendolino, Super Voyager, and Evero trains) operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
