Madrid to Toledo by train

The train from Madrid to Toledo takes around 33 to 34 minutes. It is one of the shortest high-speed journeys in Spain, and it runs frequently enough that you rarely need to plan far ahead. Renfe operates the route with Avant trains. No other train company serves it.

Avant tickets typically start from around €13 to €16.50 for a Turista (standard) seat. Prices are relatively stable compared to longer AVE routes, but they vary by date and booking window. Check live fares on Renfe’s website before booking.

Toledo is a very popular day trip from Madrid. The train is the clear choice. The bus is cheaper but takes over an hour.

Booking tickets

Buy directly from Renfe at renfe.com or at the ticket machines and counters in Madrid Atocha. The website and app are available in English and accept international payment cards.

Third-party platforms including Trainline and Omio also sell Avant tickets. Prices are generally the same as buying direct; the choice comes down to which platform you already use.

For a day trip, you can often buy the return ticket at Toledo station on the day. The machines there work in English. That said, on summer weekends or Spanish public holidays, book both legs in advance. Avant trains have assigned seating and popular departures do sell out.

Renfe opens the booking window around 60 days before departure. For this route, advance booking rarely produces large savings, but it does guarantee your preferred departure.

Ticket classes

Avant trains offer two classes.

Turista (standard) seats are 2+2, with air conditioning and pull-down tray tables. For a 33-minute trip, Turista is perfectly comfortable. Book Turista unless you have a specific reason to upgrade.

Preferente (first class) has larger seats and more space. On a journey under 35 minutes, the practical difference is minor. The extra cost is rarely justified for this route.

Seat reservation is mandatory on Avant trains. Your reservation is included in the ticket price when you buy a point-to-point ticket. There is no separate reservation fee.

Fares and when prices vary

Turista tickets typically range from around €13 to €16.50 one way. This is a relatively stable price band. Unlike long-distance AVE routes, you are unlikely to find dramatically cheaper fares by booking weeks ahead.

The clearest saving is booking direct through Renfe, where there are no booking fees. Renfe’s Más Renfe loyalty scheme earns points on Avant journeys, useful if you travel regularly in Spain. Renfe runs occasional promotional sales, but the base fares are low enough that large discounts are rare on this short route.

Using an Interrail or Eurail Pass

Interrail and Eurail both work on Avant trains, but a mandatory seat reservation is still required.

Renfe charges approximately €10 for a pass-holder Turista reservation. Given that a standard point-to-point ticket starts from around €13, using a pass on this route alone saves very little. If your pass covers longer journeys in Spain or elsewhere in Europe, use it here as well. If you bought a pass only for this route, a point-to-point ticket is likely cheaper overall.

The first departure from Madrid Atocha is typically around 06:45. The first return from Toledo is similarly early, which suits people travelling for work or an early start on the sights.

The last departure from Toledo back to Madrid is typically around 21:30 to 22:00 on weekdays. That gives day-trippers the full afternoon and early evening in the city. Timetables vary by day of the week and by season, so check the exact last return before planning a late finish.

There are approximately 10 to 12 services each way on weekdays. Weekend frequency is lower. Services are spaced evenly enough that most travellers can pick a convenient time without much planning.

Atocha station

Avant trains to Toledo depart from the Madrid Atocha platforms, the modern high-speed section of the station. The historic Atocha trainshed, which houses a tropical plant garden, is not an active platform area. Follow signs for “Avant” or “alta velocidad.”

Atocha is served by metro (line 1, Atocha Renfe station), with taxi ranks and bus connections outside. The station has left luggage facilities, a Sala Club lounge for premium ticket holders, cafés, and Renfe ticket offices.

Security screening applies before boarding: all bags go through X-ray scanners. Allow a few extra minutes if you are arriving close to departure.

Toledo station and arriving in the city

Toledo station is one of the most striking arrivals on the route. The 1919 Neo-Mudéjar building sits right at the foot of the old city. You step off the train and the historic walls are directly ahead.

The old city climbs steeply uphill from the station. Most of the main sights are within 15 to 20 minutes on foot, but the route involves a significant climb. The practical answer is the free public escalator system (escaleras mecánicas) built into the hillside nearby. These reduce the uphill section considerably. Follow signs from the station for “escaleras” or “casco histórico.”

Taxis are available outside the station. Bus line 5 also connects the station to the city centre, which can be useful if you are returning to the station with luggage or short on energy at the end of the day.

Toledo is a manageable day trip. The Cathedral, Alcázar, El Greco Museum, and old Jewish quarter are all within the historic centre, which is compact enough to cover on foot.

Baggage

Avant trains allow up to three bags per passenger, with a combined total not exceeding 25 kg and no single bag exceeding 290 cm in linear dimensions. Standard day packs and carry-on bags are well within these limits. Check Renfe’s current baggage policy before travel as rules can change.

All bags must go through X-ray scanners at Madrid Atocha before boarding. Allow a few minutes for this during peak periods.
