The Direct Route From Lisbon to Sintra

Take the CP urban train from Lisboa Rossio to Sintra if you are starting in central Lisbon.

Rossio is the simplest station for Baixa, Chiado, Avenida da Liberdade, and much of the historic centre. CP’s own Sintra visitor guidance starts the trip there, with the train running directly from Rossio to Sintra.

This is not a long-distance train. It is part of CP’s Lisbon urban network, on the Sintra/Azambuja corridor. You do not need to change trains when you board a Sintra-bound service from Rossio.

Use CP (Comboios de Portugal) for this journey. Check the CP timetable before travelling, especially around holidays, strikes, engineering work, or late-evening returns.

Lisbon Stations That Work for Sintra

Rossio is best for most visitors, but other Lisbon stations can make sense depending on where you are staying.

If two stations are equally convenient, choose Rossio. It keeps the route straightforward and avoids crossing Lisbon before the day trip has even started.

Plan on about 40 minutes from Rossio to Sintra, then add time for ticketing and onward travel inside Sintra.

Trains from Lisboa Oriente to Sintra take a little longer; checked timetable examples are around 47 minutes.

Sintra is one of the busiest day trips from Lisbon. If you want more time at Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, Quinta da Regaleira, or the historic centre, leave earlier rather than later. The train gets you to Sintra station, but the hill sights still take planning after you arrive.

Tickets, Fares, and Navegante

Buy or load a local urban ticket before boarding, then validate it at the station.

Most occasional travellers use a Navegante Occasional card. The card costs EUR 0.50. You can load Zapping credit or CP urban tickets onto it at ticket offices and vending machines inside the station.

For Zapping on CP Lisbon urban trains, CP lists a EUR 2.05 deduction when you validate. A validated CP Zapping journey covers Lisbon urban services for 90 minutes, with the usual conditions on leaving and re-entering stations.

CP’s 2026 Lisbon urban fare table shows zone-based single fares ranging from EUR 1.50 to EUR 3.90. The exact single-ticket price depends on the zones you cross, so check the CP machine or fare table before paying if you are not using Zapping.

Reservations, Passes, and Advance Booking

There is no seat reservation for the Lisbon-to-Sintra urban train.

Interrail’s Portugal train guide lists Urbanos as suburban commuter trains around Lisbon and Porto, includes Lisbon to Sintra among those lines, and confirms no reservation is needed. CP’s Eurail guidance confirms that Eurail passes are valid on regular CP national trains, with reservations required only for trains where they are compulsory.

An Interrail or Eurail pass can cover this journey if you already hold a Portugal-valid pass. For a single Lisbon-Sintra day trip, a local Navegante or Zapping fare is usually simpler than spending a travel day.

You do not need to book a specific departure in advance. The important step is to have a valid ticket or pass and validate it before boarding.

Arrival in Sintra

Sintra station is the rail gateway to town, but the main sights are spread out.

CP’s Sintra visitor page highlights the National Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, Pena Palace, and the Moorish Castle. The train brings you to Sintra station; from there, choose your local transport based on your itinerary, weather, and crowd levels.

Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle sit above the town. Build in time beyond the train ride, especially on weekends and school holidays.

Final Tips for the Journey

Use Rossio, validate before boarding, and check CP before you leave.

Arrive with a little time for ticket machines, especially in the morning rush. Keep the Navegante card for the return trip or for later Lisbon transport. If you load a ticket at the station, keep the receipt until the ticket expires.

Do not plan to sort out a ticket on board. CP’s guidance says travellers must buy their ticket before boarding on the Sintra, Cascais, Azambuja, and Sado lines, and validation before boarding is compulsory.

Check your return time before heading uphill into Sintra. The last train back is easy to forget when the day fills up with palace visits, viewpoints, and dinner.
