Braga to Lisbon by train is a straightforward domestic journey on CP, Portugal’s national rail operator. The direct Alfa Pendular is the best choice: it runs from Braga to Lisboa Oriente in about 3 hours 23 minutes on the fastest listed services, with most trains continuing a few minutes further to Lisboa Santa Apolonia.

Direct Alfa Pendular from Braga

The direct Alfa Pendular is the simplest and fastest way to travel from Braga to Lisbon. CP’s Lisboa-Norte long-distance timetable, valid since 14 December 2025, lists up to six direct Braga departures on Alfa Pendular services across the day, covering morning, midday, afternoon, and evening slots. Some services carry operating notes that vary by day, so check your exact travel date before committing to the last departure or a tight same-day connection.

The fastest listed trains leave Braga, call at Porto Campanha, continue south through the North Line, and reach Lisboa Oriente in about 3 hours 23 minutes. Most continue a few minutes further to Lisboa Santa Apolonia, arriving in about 3 hours 30 minutes.

Alfa Pendular is CP’s premium long-distance service. It runs the full corridor between Braga and Faro, with stops including Porto, Coimbra, and Lisbon. Onboard you get Wi-Fi, power sockets, a cafeteria and bar, restrooms, and luggage racks at carriage entrances and above the seats.

Changing at Porto Campanha

Changing at Porto Campanha is a practical alternative when the direct Alfa Pendular times do not suit your day.

CP’s Urbanos do Porto network connects Braga with Porto Campanha and Porto São Bento on frequent urban services, with the current timetable valid since 25 January 2026. Porto Campanha is the main long-distance interchange: Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains to Coimbra and Lisbon all stop there.

The connection works in three steps:

• Take a Braga urban train to Porto Campanha.

• Change platforms at Porto Campanha.

• Board an Alfa Pendular or Intercidades south to Lisboa Oriente or Lisboa Santa Apolonia.

This option is worth considering when direct seats are sold out, when an Intercidades fare is lower, or when the direct Braga departure time is awkward. Build in a sensible buffer at Porto Campanha. CP’s timetable notes state that connections are guaranteed only under normal operating conditions, and a small delay on the urban leg can cause you to miss a reserved long-distance service.

Lisbon Arrival Stations

Most direct Alfa Pendular services from Braga call at both Lisboa Oriente and Lisboa Santa Apolonia, so you can choose the station that suits your onward journey.

Lisboa Oriente sits in the Parque das Nações district and connects directly with the metro and onward long-distance trains. It is the better choice if you are flying the same day or staying in the eastern or northern parts of the city.

Lisboa Santa Apolonia is on the riverfront edge of the historic centre, close to Alfama and Baixa. If your accommodation is in that part of Lisbon, Santa Apolonia can save you a metro ride.

When times and prices are similar, pick the station that shortens your final leg into the city.

Tickets and Fares

CP’s 2026 Alfa Pendular price table lists the one-way full fare between Lisboa Santa Apolonia or Lisboa Oriente and Braga at EUR 38.50 in tourist class and EUR 54.60 in comfort class. These are official full fares, not a live quote for every departure.

CP releases Promo tickets at a discount on many Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services. Promo fares require at least 5 days of advance purchase, and discounts can reach up to 65% when you book 8 or more days ahead. Promo seats are limited and sell out, so the cheapest fares go first.

If you are weighing a direct Alfa Pendular against a connection via Porto, compare the full itinerary cost and travel time. A direct train is simpler. A connection can sometimes be cheaper or better timed, particularly if you use an Intercidades south of Porto, but it adds the risk of a missed connection if the urban leg runs late.

Interrail and Eurail on This Route

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on CP trains in Portugal, including the Alfa Pendular, but they do not remove the reservation requirement.

CP confirms that the Eurail Global Pass and the Eurail One Country Portugal Pass are valid on regular CP services. Alfa Pendular and Intercidades are listed among the trains where a compulsory seat reservation fee applies on top of the pass. CP’s Alfa Pendular surcharge page lists that seat reservation at EUR 5.

For European residents, Interrail is the relevant pass family. For travellers from outside Europe, Eurail applies. A pass makes most sense when Braga to Lisbon is one leg of a longer European rail trip. For a single domestic journey, compare the pass cost plus the EUR 5 reservation against a standard CP ticket or a Promo fare.

Booking and Boarding

Book the direct Alfa Pendular for the specific train you want to travel on. Your ticket and seat are tied to that service.

Luggage is straightforward for standard suitcases. Alfa Pendular has luggage racks at carriage entrances and overhead racks above the seats. Bicycles are not permitted on Alfa Pendular unless they are dismantled and packed as luggage.

For most travellers the plan is simple: book the direct Alfa Pendular if the time and price work. Use the Porto Campanha connection when it gives you a better departure time, a lower fare, or a more convenient arrival in Lisbon.
