Lisbon to Braga by train is a direct CP route for much of the day. The fastest checked direct option is an Alfa Pendular from Lisboa Oriente to Braga in 3 hours 20 minutes. The same train takes 3 hours 29 minutes from Lisboa Santa Apolonia.

Direct Trains Run All Day

The easiest way to travel from Lisbon to Braga by train is to book a direct CP long-distance service. For most travellers, the choice comes down to three options.

Start with CP’s own timetable. It shows the official long-distance services and the exact station calls for your travel date.

The Best Route From Lisbon to Braga

The best route is a direct CP train from Lisboa Santa Apolonia or Lisboa Oriente to Braga.

Lisboa Santa Apolonia is the central long-distance starting point shown in CP’s Lisbon-North timetable. Lisboa Oriente is often more convenient if you are arriving from Lisbon Airport, Parque das Nacoes, or the metro.

Braga is the final station for the direct route. The train runs north via the main Lisbon-Porto corridor, then continues beyond Porto towards Braga. You do not need to cross Porto when you hold a direct ticket.

CP’s Lisbon-North timetable, valid since 14 December 2025, shows direct long-distance services reaching Braga. One morning Alfa Pendular example leaves Lisboa Oriente at 07:09 and arrives in Braga at 10:29.

Alfa Pendular vs Intercidades

Choose Alfa Pendular for the fastest direct trip. Choose Intercidades when price matters more than a few minutes.

Alfa Pendular is CP’s premium long-distance service. It is the quickest option on this route, and CP describes it as serving Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, and Faro. It is also the service to check first if you want the most comfortable direct ride.

Intercidades is the sensible value option. It is still a long-distance train, but normal fares are lower than Alfa Pendular. If you are not in a hurry, it can be the better buy.

When Changing in Porto Makes Sense

Changing at Porto Campanha can help if the direct Lisbon-Braga trains do not fit your date or budget.

This is not usually the first choice. A direct ticket takes you all the way to Braga without any transfer. But the Porto change is useful when you find a good Lisbon-Porto fare, when direct trains are sold out, or when you want to spend time in Porto before continuing north.

If you use this option, book Lisbon to Porto Campanha first. Then use CP’s Porto urban trains for the Porto-Braga section. Porto urban trains serve Braga and connect with long-distance services at the main stations.

Leave a sensible buffer at Porto Campanha. A legal connection in a timetable is not always the same as a relaxed connection with luggage.

CP’s online ticket office sells long-distance tickets up to 60 days ahead and until 15 minutes before the train leaves your origin station. Booking earlier improves your chances of Promo availability, a preferred seat, and a good fare on busy Friday or Sunday departures.

Interrail and Eurail Passes

An Interrail or Eurail pass can work for Lisbon to Braga, but you still need to handle seat reservations separately.

Because Lisbon and Braga are both in Portugal, a Portugal One Country Pass is relevant. A Global Pass also works if this trip is part of a wider European itinerary.

The pass does not include a seat reservation. Alfa Pendular reservations are compulsory for passholders, and CP advises booking ahead for trains with compulsory reservations. Confirm your reservation before committing to hotels or onward travel.

For a single Lisbon-Braga journey, compare the pass cost against a normal CP ticket. Point-to-point tickets are often simpler for one domestic trip, especially if a Promo Ticket is available.
