Breda station is the one to use: every NS Intercity and Sprinter calls here, and so does the EuroCity to Antwerp and Brussels. The old town, Valkenberg park and the Grote Markt lie just south of it.

Which station to use

Breda station sits on the north edge of the old town and has two sides. The Belcrum side faces north and the city side faces the centre, with a wide underpass and shops linking them. For the old town, leave on the city side.

Trains from Rotterdam, Schiphol Airport, Eindhoven, Tilburg, 's-Hertogenbosch and Roosendaal all stop here. In the 2026 timetable, which runs to 12 December, an hourly train links Vlissingen with Breda, Tilburg and beyond. Across the border, the EuroCity runs 16 trains a day in each direction between Brussels and Rotterdam, calling at Breda, Noorderkempen, Antwerpen-Centraal, Mechelen and Brussels Airport-Zaventem.

The table gives NS journey times as of October 2026.

Rotterdam has around 80 trains a day and Tilburg around 110. For Amsterdam, the Intercity Direct runs to Amsterdam Zuid without a change; it needs the supplement because it uses the Rotterdam to Schiphol section. There is no through train from Amsterdam to Brussels via Breda: the EuroCity starts in Rotterdam, so change there. The faster Eurocity Direct skips Breda and serves Antwerpen-Centraal, Schiphol and Rotterdam only.

Engineering works to 12 December

These dated changes affect trains at Breda.

  • 31 October to 2 November: between Tilburg and Boxtel trains run via 's-Hertogenbosch, so allow extra time on Breda to Eindhoven.
  • Saturday 7 November 01:00 to Monday 9 November 05:00: no trains run to, from or through Rotterdam Centraal, including the high-speed line to Breda, and replacement buses and metro run. Between Breda and Amsterdam, travel via 's-Hertogenbosch. On 7 and 8 November the EuroCity runs between Brussels and Roosendaal only, with replacement buses between Noorderkempen and Breda, and the Eurocity Direct, which normally skips Breda, is diverted to run between Brussels and Breda only.
  • 14 and 15 November: the EuroCity runs only between Brussels-Nord and Breda.
  • 21 to 23 November: the EuroCity does not run between Brussels-Nord and Brussels-Midi, apart from four trains.
  • 14 to 23 November: works between Roosendaal and Vlissingen lengthen journeys to Zeeland. On weekdays until 20:30 express buses also run between Kruiningen-Yerseke and Middelburg/Vlissingen.

A new timetable starts on 13 December 2026. No engineering works are planned on lines through Breda from 1 December 2026 to 4 January 2027.

From the station to the centre

Leave on the city side and walk through Valkenberg park, which links the station with the city centre and was once the garden of Breda Castle. From the park, the Vismarkt and the Grote Markt follow. The Grote Markt is the old town's main square, with the Grote Kerk on it.

Tickets

Check in and out with a contactless debit card, credit card or phone, or buy an e-ticket in the NS app, which carries no €1.60 surcharge. A one-way or day return ticket is valid until 04:00 the next day. For Antwerp and Brussels, buy from NS International or SNCB International.

Rail passes and reservations

Intercity and Sprinter trains need no reservation with an Interrail pass. The EuroCity takes no reservations either, so pass holders just board. A Netherlands One Country Pass covers it only as far as the Belgian border: for Antwerp or Brussels you need a Benelux Pass, a Global Pass or a ticket for the Belgian part. The Intercity Direct needs a €3 supplement between Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam Centraal, as of October 2026, so it matters on Breda to Schiphol and Amsterdam Zuid and not on Breda to Rotterdam.

Mistakes to avoid

Taking the wrong train to Brussels is the first. The Eurocity Direct is faster but does not stop at Breda.

The second is the Intercity Direct to Schiphol or Amsterdam Zuid: buy the €3.20 supplement in the NS app or tap your card at the supplement pillar on the platform before boarding, because on board it costs €10. Breda to Rotterdam never needs it.

Third, Eurostar does not call at Breda. It runs from Amsterdam via Schiphol and Rotterdam, so Breda to Paris needs one change.
