Nijmegen station is the one to use for the city centre. It has direct Intercity trains to Arnhem, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport and Zwolle, and Arriva trains along the Maaslijn to Venlo and Roermond.

Which station to use

Nijmegen is the main station and the only one of the city's five with Intercity trains. The city centre is a 5 minute walk away, and the station is also the central bus station for city and regional buses.

Nijmegen Goffert, Nijmegen Dukenburg and Nijmegen Lent have NS Sprinters. From Nijmegen the Sprinter takes 3 to 4 minutes to Goffert and 6 to 7 minutes to Dukenburg, and 3 minutes to Lent, which lies in the Nijmegen-Noord district. Use them only when your address is next to one.

Nijmegen Heyendaal is the stop for Radboudumc, whose East entrance is a 10 minute walk away. Only Arriva trains call there, about every 15 minutes from Nijmegen, and the ride takes 3 minutes.

From the station into town

The Grote Markt, the main square, is in the old centre. Tap in and out on city buses with the same contactless card or phone you use on the train.

For Radboudumc, buses 6, 9, 10, 83 and 300 run from the station to the stop Radboudumc, and buses 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 300 to Universiteit Oostzijde for the East entrance.

Trains to Germany

Düsseldorf Hbf takes about 1 hour 34 minutes with one change, usually at Arnhem. Tickets on NS International start at €20.

Tickets

Tap in and out with a contactless debit card, credit card or phone. You travel second class without a discount, and the day's fares are taken in one payment the next day. If you tap in by mistake, tap out at the same station within 60 minutes and the journey is cancelled. If you forget to tap out, you can still do it at a gate or pole up to 6 hours later; after that you pay a standard fare.

A single-use smartcard from a desk or ticket machine adds a €1.60 surcharge to single tickets and day returns. An e-ticket from the NS app avoids it.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, Interrail covers every NS and Arriva train that calls at Nijmegen, with no reservation. An Interrail Benelux Pass does not cover the journey across the border to Düsseldorf; a Global Pass does.

Mistakes to avoid

Arriva and NS count as separate operators when you tap. When you change between the Maaslijn and an NS train at Nijmegen, tap out of the first and tap in again for the second. That includes a trip from Heyendaal to Arnhem or Utrecht, which always changes at Nijmegen.

On Sunday 1 November 2026, from 06:00 to 01:00 the next night, Intercity trains between Amsterdam or Schiphol and Utrecht run less often to an amended timetable; Nijmegen to Amsterdam takes about 1 hour 36 minutes and some trips need an extra change.

NS had not published its Christmas and New Year timetable by late October 2026.
