Arnhem Centraal is the station to use for Arnhem. Direct trains run from here to Amsterdam, Utrecht and Nijmegen, and the ICE to Germany stops here too.

Which station to use

Arnhem Centraal is the only one of the city's three stations with long-distance trains, including direct Intercity trains to Schiphol Airport, The Hague and Zwolle.

Arnhem Velperpoort and Arnhem Presikhaaf are local stops. Velperpoort is 2 to 3 minutes east of Centraal, served by NS Sprinters to Zutphen and Nijmegen and by the local trains to Doetinchem and Winterswijk. Presikhaaf, on the Zutphen line, has NS Sprinters only. Use either only when your address is beside it.

From the station to the centre

The shopping streets begin a 5 minute walk from Arnhem Centraal; the Markt and the Eusebiuskerk lie at the far, river end of the old centre. Arnhem is the only Dutch city with trolleybuses, and they run from the station into town. Buses also stop at Rijnstraat, Willemsplein and Velperplein on the edge of the centre. Tap in and out on the bus with the same contactless card or phone you use on the train.

Bus 3 from the station runs every 15 minutes to Burgers' Zoo and stops at the Netherlands Open Air Museum (Openluchtmuseum) on the way. For De Hoge Veluwe National Park and the Kröller-Müller Museum, take bus 105 towards Barneveld to Otterlo, Rotonde and change there to bus 106, which stops at the park entrance and at the museum.

Direct trains run every 30 minutes to Amsterdam and about every 10 minutes to Utrecht. The first direct train to Amsterdam leaves Arnhem Centraal at 05:31 on weekdays and the last at midnight. The last direct train back from Amsterdam Centraal leaves at 00:23. These times apply until the timetable change on 13 December 2026.

Trains to Germany

ICE trains leave Arnhem Centraal for Germany every two hours, at 34 minutes past the hour from 07:34 to 19:34. Düsseldorf takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, Cologne about 1 hour 40 minutes and Frankfurt about 2 hours 55 minutes, with no change. Fares start at €20 one way to Düsseldorf and Cologne and at €38 to Frankfurt, and the cheapest fares sell out early. A domestic ICE trip between Amsterdam and Arnhem needs an extra supplement.

VIAS runs the RE 19 regional train from Arnhem Centraal to Düsseldorf Hbf through Zevenaar, Emmerich, Wesel and Duisburg. In the timetable valid until 12 December 2026 it leaves at 45 minutes past every hour from 05:45 (06:45 on Sundays). The last train through to Düsseldorf leaves at 20:45; the 21:45 and 22:45 go only as far as Duisburg.

ÖBB Nightjet sleeper trains call at Arnhem Centraal too. The Nightjet to Innsbruck and Vienna leaves every evening at 19:08 (20:08 from 13 December 2026), and the Nightjet to Zurich leaves at 22:04 on most evenings.

Local trains to Doetinchem and Winterswijk

Arriva runs the local trains, signed RRReis, from Arnhem Centraal through Arnhem Velperpoort, Westervoort, Duiven and Zevenaar to Doetinchem and Winterswijk, and a second line to Elst and Tiel. Doetinchem is 32 minutes away, with up to four trains an hour, and Winterswijk about 1 hour 5 minutes, with a direct train every 30 minutes. Works on the Winterswijk line run from 04:00 on Saturday 31 October to 02:00 on Monday 2 November, and from 04:00 on Saturday 7 November to 02:00 on Monday 9 November 2026, so allow extra time on those weekends.

Tickets

Tap in and out with a contactless debit card, credit card or phone at the card readers. You travel second class without a discount, and the day's fares are taken in one payment the next day. If you tap in by mistake, tap out at the same station within 60 minutes and the journey is cancelled. If you forget to tap out, you can still do it at a gate or pole up to 6 hours later; after that you pay a standard fare.

An e-ticket bought online or in the NS app avoids the €1.60 NS adds at desks and ticket machines.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, Interrail covers NS Intercity and Sprinter trains, the RRReis local trains and the VIAS RE 19, with no reservation; on the RE 19 a Benelux One Country Pass is valid only as far as the border. ICE trains need no reservation outside peak summer, but one is recommended and compulsory in the summer peak (25 June to 5 September in 2027). It costs €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first, plus a €2 booking fee per passenger per train when you book through Interrail. Nightjet trains always need a paid reservation, and the Benelux One Country Pass does not cover them; a Global Pass does.

Mistakes to avoid

On Sunday 1 November 2026, from 06:00 to 01:00 the next night, Intercity trains between Amsterdam or Schiphol and Utrecht run less often, and journeys to Arnhem can take about 20 minutes longer or need an extra change.

Arriva and NS count as separate operators when you tap. When you change from one to the other, tap out of the first and tap in again for the second.
