The route at a glance
The first leg is the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn from Zermatt to Visp. MGB trains run about every 30 minutes on the Visp to Zermatt corridor. At Visp, follow the signs for the SBB platforms and take IR90 or IR95 towards Genève. IR90 and IR95 run as direct long-distance connections from Visp to Genève. Trains leave Zermatt twice an hour at the same minutes through the day, and each one has a connection at Visp.
The complete journey is normally one change at Visp. Buy a through journey in the SBB timetable if you want one itinerary, or use separate tickets if that suits your rail pass and plans. Leave a little margin at Visp when travelling with ski equipment or heavy bags. From 12 October to 8 November 2026, buses replace the MGB trains between Täsch and Visp, which adds up to about 10 minutes to the journey.
Leaving from Zermatt station
Zermatt station is in the centre of the car-free village, next to the Gornergrat Bahn. It has a ticket office, ticket machines, lockers and step-free platform access. Private cars do not reach Zermatt, so drivers leave their vehicles at Täsch and use the MGB shuttle before continuing into the village.
Trains, operators and journey time
Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn operates the mountain railway between Zermatt and Visp. Interrail and Eurail cover the MGB line between Visp and Zermatt. SBB operates the mainline leg from Visp to Genève. IR90 and IR95 run towards Genève.
Allow about 4 hours for the whole journey. The MGB train from Zermatt to Visp takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, the change at Visp about 20 minutes, and the SBB train from Visp to Genève about 2 hours 20 minutes. The SBB leg is the longer part of the trip through Valais and along Lake Geneva.
Tickets, passes and reservations
Standard SBB and MGB trains on this route are ordinary Swiss services, not the Glacier Express. A seat reservation is not normally needed. Buy the ticket before boarding the MGB train: its current policy adds a CHF 10 service surcharge when a ticket is bought on board.
An Interrail or Eurail Global Pass covers the SBB and MGB rail sections in Switzerland, including the Visp to Zermatt MGB line. Pass holders should add both trains to their travel day and follow the pass conditions. The Swiss Travel Pass covers travel by train throughout Switzerland, while panorama-train reservations and supplements remain separate.
The Glacier Express is a different product. It runs between Zermatt and the eastern Alps, not from Zermatt to Geneva. It requires both a valid ticket and a compulsory seat reservation, so it is not a substitute for the ordinary MGB and SBB connection to Geneva.
If you are returning to Geneva after a day in Zermatt
For a same-day return to Geneva, the last connections with one change leave Zermatt at about 19:30 and reach Genève just before midnight. Check the SBB timetable for your date and leave enough margin for the change at Visp. If you miss a connection at Visp, take the next IR90 or IR95. If the last connection has gone, plan to stay overnight.
Arriving at Genève-Cornavin
The SBB train arrives at Genève-Cornavin, Geneva's main station. From Cornavin, walk into central Geneva or continue by local public transport. If Geneva Airport is your next stop, plan a separate onward connection from Genève.
Glacier Express and scenic alternatives
The Glacier Express is worth considering only if the scenic train itself is the purpose of the journey. It follows a different route towards Brig, Andermatt, Chur and St. Moritz, takes much longer, and requires a seat reservation and a valid ticket. For Geneva, the regular MGB train to Visp and SBB train to Genève-Cornavin are the practical route.
