London to Barcelona by train

There is no direct train from London to Barcelona. The journey combines two separate services: the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord, then a TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon to Barcelona Sants. Those are two different Paris stations, and the transfer between them takes around 30 to 45 minutes of travel time. Allow at least 90 minutes at Paris to make the connection comfortably, especially with luggage.

With a well-timed connection, the total journey takes around 9 to 10 hours. The Eurostar takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. The TGV from Paris to Barcelona takes around 6 hours 40 minutes to 7 hours depending on the service.

The route: two legs, one Paris change

Leg 1: London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord (Eurostar)

Eurostar runs multiple departures a day from London St Pancras International. The typical journey time is around 2 hours 15 minutes. You arrive at Paris Gare du Nord. For full guidance on this leg, see the London to Paris by train guide.

Arrive at St Pancras at least 45 to 60 minutes before departure, and 90 minutes if you want to be comfortable. The UK is outside the Schengen Area, so you clear both UK exit controls and French entry controls before boarding. The process is similar to airport check-in. Do not treat it like a domestic train departure.

Transfer: Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon

These are different stations in different parts of the city, not platforms in the same building. Allow at least 90 minutes between your Eurostar arrival and your TGV departure. Less than that is risky with luggage.

Your main options for the transfer:

• Metro line 5: Direct from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon. Around 5 stops and roughly 15 minutes on the train. Add walking time at each end.

• Metro line 4 then line 1: Change at Châtelet. Slightly more complex but straightforward with clear signage.

• Taxi or booked car: 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Sensible for families or heavy luggage. Expect around €20 to €40.

The Metro is the default for most travellers. Buy a single-journey t+ ticket or pay by contactless card on the barriers.

Leg 2: Paris Gare de Lyon to Barcelona Sants (TGV)

TGV services to Barcelona run around two to three times a day from Gare de Lyon. Journey time is typically around 6 hours 40 minutes to 7 hours. Services are operated by SNCF, sometimes jointly with Renfe on the cross-border leg.

Stations

London St Pancras International

The Eurostar departs from here. St Pancras is in central London, adjacent to King’s Cross. The Underground station (King’s Cross St Pancras) connects to the Victoria, Piccadilly, Northern, Metropolitan, Circle, and Hammersmith and City lines. Allow time for check-in, passport control, and security before your Eurostar.

Paris Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon

Gare du Nord is where you arrive from London. It does not have direct TGV services to Spain. You need to get to Gare de Lyon, about 5 km away, for your Barcelona train. Do not assume they are connected internally; they are not. For more detail on both stations, see the Paris train stations guide.

Barcelona Sants and Passeig de Gràcia

Barcelona Sants is the main terminal for TGV arrivals from Paris. Metro lines L3 and L5 serve the station. The R2 Nord Rodalies line connects to Barcelona El Prat airport in around 20 minutes.

Some TGV services from Paris also stop at Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia before terminating at Sants. Passeig de Gràcia is more central. If your accommodation is in the Eixample or Gothic Quarter, check whether your specific train stops there. Tickets and how to book

The Eurostar and TGV are separate tickets. Book them independently.

For the Eurostar leg (London to Paris): Book via Eurostar.com, or through a comparison platform such as Trainline, Rail Europe, or Omio. Advance Eurostar fares start from around £30 to £60 for Standard class. Prices rise with demand and last-minute booking.

For the TGV leg (Paris to Barcelona): Book via SNCF Connect (sncf-connect.com), Rail Europe, Trainline, or Omio. Advance second-class fares can start from around €29 to €40, but prices increase as seats fill. First class is available if you want more comfort on the longer leg.

Booking directly with Eurostar and SNCF typically gives you the most straightforward exchange and refund options. Booking through a comparison platform is useful for seeing prices across operators and fare types at once. Both legs typically go on sale around 4 to 6 months before the travel date.

Missed connections

Eurostar and TGV tickets are separate products with separate terms. If your Eurostar runs late and you miss your TGV, you are not automatically entitled to a free rebooking. This is why 90 minutes in Paris matters. If you are worried about this risk, check the change conditions on each ticket when you book, and consider whether a flexible fare on one or both legs makes sense.

Rail passes (Interrail and Eurail)

Both Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on this route. You need separate seat reservations for both legs. The Eurostar works differently from other European trains for pass holders.

Eurostar: Pass holders cannot board with just their pass and a standard Interrail online booking. You need to book a specific Eurostar pass reservation via the Eurostar website. Pass holder spaces are limited and can sell out weeks or months before travel. If no pass holder spaces are available, you must buy a full Eurostar ticket. Book this as soon as your dates are confirmed.

TGV Paris to Barcelona: Book a pass holder seat reservation via Rail Europe, SNCF Connect, or the Interrail or Eurail booking tools. Reservation fees are typically around €35 to €40 for second class. Prices may vary by train and booking channel. Pass holder seats on both services can sell out, so do not assume availability.

Train classes and onboard

Eurostar

Standard is the right choice for most travellers: comfortable seats, free WiFi, power sockets, and access to the Eurostar café-bar. Standard Premier adds a light meal at seat and slightly more space. Business Premier includes a full meal, larger seats, and lounge access at London and Paris.

TGV INOUI (Paris to Barcelona)

Standard 2 (second class) covers the basics: comfortable seats, free WiFi, power sockets, and an onboard bar. On TGV Duplex trains, seat numbers above 60 are on the upper deck and typically offer better views. Standard 1 (first class) gives more space and at-seat meal service. On a nearly 7-hour journey, this is a comfortable option if the price difference is reasonable.

Along the route

The TGV from Paris heads south through the Rhone valley, passing Lyon, Valence, Nimes, and Montpellier before crossing into Spain via the high-speed Perpignan tunnel through the Pyrenees. The first Spanish stop is Figueres-Vilafant, then Girona, then Barcelona.

The Figueres stop is brief but worth noting: Figueres is the home of the Salvador Dali Theatre-Museum. Some travellers choose to break the journey here for a day or two on a longer trip.
