The train beats flying here without much argument. You depart from central Paris and arrive in central Brussels, with no airport transfers needed. Brussels is also an easy day trip – leave Paris in the morning, spend a full day in the city, and you can be back the same evening.

Introduction to the train journey

Paris and Brussels are about 264 km apart. The high-speed line between them is one of the busiest international corridors in Europe. Eurostar absorbed former Thalys operations on this route in October 2023 and now runs everything directly.

There are no changes required. You board at Paris Gare du Nord and step off at Brussels-Midi around 80 minutes later.

Ticket classes

Eurostar runs three classes on Paris-Brussels trains.

Eurostar Standard

Every Standard seat has free Wi-Fi, a power socket, and a luggage allowance of two bags plus one small daypack. You can change the date and time of your ticket up to one hour before departure with no fee – though if the new ticket costs more, you pay the difference. Refunds are available up to seven days before departure for €25 per person, per leg.

Fares start from around €29 one-way. Prices are demand-driven, so the cheapest seats go first, and booking closer to departure usually costs more.

Eurostar Plus

Plus has wider seats and more legroom. Wi-Fi, power sockets, and luggage allowances are the same as Standard, and so are the exchange and refund rules. One thing worth knowing: on Paris-Brussels trains, Plus does not include food at seat. That benefit is for London routes only.

Plus fares on Paris-Brussels start from around €57 one-way.

Eurostar Premier

Premier includes a meal and drinks served at your seat, access to Eurostar lounges in Paris and Brussels before you board, and a luggage allowance of three bags plus a daypack. Tickets can be exchanged or fully refunded up to 48 hours after your original departure time, and a same-day boarding guarantee lets you take any available train on your travel day if plans change.

Premier fares on Paris-Brussels start from around €130 one-way.

The journey at 300 km/h

Eurostar trains run at around 300 km/h on the high-speed line between Paris and Brussels. The route cuts north through flat farming country in northern France before crossing into Belgium, with Brussels coming into view on the approach. Most travellers find 80 minutes a useful stretch for working or reading.

Train companies and services

Eurostar is the only operator of direct high-speed trains between Paris and Brussels. Ouigo and TGV Inoui do not serve this route. Ouigo runs domestic French and some France-Spain services but has never operated Paris-Brussels.

Thalys ran services on this route until 16 October 2023, when it merged into Eurostar. All trains that previously ran under the Thalys name now operate as Eurostar services.

SNCF does not operate direct Paris-Brussels trains. You can book Eurostar tickets through SNCF Connect, but SNCF is a booking channel on this route, not the operator.

Train stations

Paris Gare du Nord

Eurostar trains leave from Paris Gare du Nord, the busiest station in Europe by passenger numbers. The Eurostar terminal is in the north wing, with its own check-in and security area. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your departure – there are passport checks and security screening before the platform, and queues can build on busy mornings.

Metro lines 2, 4 and 5 serve Gare du Nord. RER lines B and D connect it to other Paris hubs and Charles de Gaulle Airport. From most central Paris neighbourhoods, count on about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the station by Metro.

Brussels-Midi (Bruxelles-Midi / Brussel-Zuid)

Eurostar trains arrive at Brussels-Midi. The station goes by several names: Bruxelles-Midi in French, Brussel-Zuid in Dutch, and Brussels South in English – all the same place. It is the city’s main international rail hub. From Brussels-Midi, Metro lines 2 and 6 reach the city centre in around 10 minutes. Trams and buses also serve the station.

Book your train to Brussels-Midi. Brussels-Central is a different station, served by domestic Belgian trains only; Eurostar does not stop there.

You can buy Eurostar tickets at eurostar.com or through the Eurostar app. Booking online saves the service fee charged for phone and station bookings. SNCF Connect, Trainline, Omio, Rail Europe, NS International, and other resellers sell the same tickets at the same fares.

The Eurostar app stores your mobile ticket, sends departure notifications, and lets you manage exchanges on the day of travel – worth having beyond the initial purchase.

Eurostar Standard fares on Paris-Brussels start from around €29 one-way. Plus starts from around €57, and Premier from around €130. These are starting fares; most departures cost more, particularly at peak times, on weekends, and when booking in the final week or two before travel.

Children aged 4 to 11 travel at around half the adult fare in Eurostar Standard and Plus. Children under 4 travel free on an adult’s lap. The children’s discount does not apply to Premier.

Interrail and Eurail passes

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Paris-Brussels Eurostar trains, but a separate seat reservation is still required. Reservation fees for pass holders start from €27 per person one-way.

A second-class pass gets you Eurostar Standard seating. A first-class pass gets you Eurostar Plus. Neither covers Eurostar Premier.

Reserve as early as possible – pass-holder seats are limited and sell out on popular departures. All bookings and reservations go through Eurostar’s own system now that the Thalys brand is gone.

The route

The train leaves Paris heading north through the suburbs before reaching the high-speed line that crosses the flat farmland of Picardy. The landscape opens out as you approach Belgium, and the Brussels skyline appears as the train eases through the southern suburbs into Brussels-Midi. It is a useful 80 minutes to get a sense of how close the two cities actually are.

Brussels-Midi sits close to the city centre. The Grand Place is about a 20-minute walk from the station, or a short Metro ride.

Onboard amenities

All Eurostar trains on Paris-Brussels have free Wi-Fi and power sockets at every seat. You can buy meals, drinks, and snacks from the onboard café. Premier passengers receive a full meal and drinks at their seat; the menu is seasonal.

Seat reservations

A standard Eurostar ticket includes your seat. There is no separate reservation fee. Interrail and Eurail pass holders need to buy a separate seat reservation, starting from €27 per person one-way.

Extra luggage

Paris-Brussels is a continental Eurostar route. Extra luggage beyond the standard allowance costs €30 per additional item, paid at the station on the day of travel. There is no pre-booking option for extra luggage on continental routes (unlike London-route trains, which have a registered luggage service). Any extra item – oversized bag, bike, or sports equipment – is €30, and it must fit in the carriage’s luggage areas.

Changes and refunds

For Eurostar Standard and Plus:

Date and time changes cost nothing, up to one hour before departure. If the new ticket is cheaper, you do not get a refund on the difference.
Refunds are available up to seven days before departure for €25 per person, per leg.
If you miss your train, rebooking depends on availability and Eurostar’s conditions at the time – check these before you travel.

For Eurostar Premier:

You can exchange or fully refund your ticket up to 48 hours after your original departure time.
The same-day boarding guarantee lets you board any available train on your travel day.

Children’s tickets (ages 4 to 11) follow the same exchange and refund rules as the accompanying adult’s ticket.

Small pets and assistance dogs

Eurostar is an international train service. You need a valid passport or government-issued national ID card to travel from Paris to Brussels. Document checks happen at Paris Gare du Nord before you reach the platform – this applies to all Eurostar trains regardless of where you are from.

Build this into your timing. Arriving at Gare du Nord at least 30 minutes before departure gives you enough time for passport checks and security.
